A while back I subscribed to a little e-newsletter put out by a salon and day spa I used to frequent, up until I’d had enough of their price increases, and I never unsubscribed in case one day they send me an announcement of a really good deal. ^_^ At any rate, they sent out a message today, reminding us that it is almost Mother’s Day, and that an ideal gift would be one of their gift cards, which the lucky mother could then use to fund a wonderfully relaxing massage treatment.

I read the message, smirked to myself, and thought Not my Mum.

Several years ago, I had been talking about fancy spa massages with my mother, not sure why, as I’ve never been for one nor have I ever seriously considered going because they’re rather extravagantly priced and I’d rather do other things with my money. I was reading out some descriptions to her, though, involving exotic fragrant oils and luxurious creams derived from plant extracts and nut butters, and I noticed Mum start to get all twitchy looking. “That doesn’t sound nice?” I asked. She squinched up her face, shook her head, and said, “No, not really.” “How so?” was my next question. This time, when she squinched up her face, she managed to somehow withdraw into herself a little - a bit like curling up into a ball, I guess, only she stayed upright in her chair - and admitted that she wasn’t keen on the idea of going for a massage because it required her to get all kinds of naked in front of a stranger, and then allow that stranger to touch her nakedness…..
Admittedly, when you put it that way, the idea of a massage loses a bit of its appeal… I mean, who can gaurantee who the masseuse is? ^_^

So I know not to run out and purchase a spa gift certificate for my mother, for Mother’s Day, or her birthday, or Christmas, or any other gift-giving occasion.

What am I getting her this year, then? Well, Mum’s a Potter fan, so I’ve got her Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone on Blu-ray. She already has this one on DVD, but now she can get her Potter fix in high definition. ^_^

And yes, I know that in Canada it was released as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, but the American title is what’s on the case, so that’s what I’m putting here….
