Before I report my findings, I’d like to make a few of my own biases clear.
First, I don’t think I’ve ever really had crunchy/chunky peanut butter in my life, never mind on toast. I’ve always had the smooth/creamy stuff. I like the smooth stuff. It just glides onto the toast so easily and evenly. Being pretty certain that crunchy peanut butter would be more difficult to spread made me think I prefer smooth, even though I hadn’t given crunchy a proper chance to redeem itself.
So today, when preparing my test toast, I saw my suspicions confirmed – the crunchy did not spread easily. In order to achieve acceptable coverage levels, the peanut butter had to be applied rather thickly. Even then, it lacked the presentational grace and aesthetic appeal of the smooth – it’s just all lumpy.
This is, however, a taste test, so instead of throwing away the less appealing looking toast, I proceeded to eat half of the crunchy slice. It was good. The bits of peanuts mixed in adds a nice extra crunch.
Half of the smooth slice was next. It was less interesting, texture wise, but it was still very very nice.
In terms of actual taste, I think they were largely the same, though.
So, I am left to conclude that although I do have a preference for the smooth peanut butter, this seems to be based purely on its spreadability and resulting appearance. I do not find the crunchy peanut butter unappealing, and therefore am inclined to keep both varieties stocked in my home so that I may use whichever one strikes my fancy at a given moment….

Seems to me the natural usage of crunchy in on a sandwich where you can’t see it, and smooth belongs on open faced toast, where the appearance counts, too.
Kind of like shaving more frequently in the summer than in the winter…
