I thought about that for a moment, and imagined someone taking a butter knife and theatrically plunging it into the coin slot, at which point there would be a sound and then coins would fly out while lights flashed and mystical fog swirled about. This seemed highly improbable. Still, I must have had an odd look on my face, because suddenly there was laughter, and a butter knife was fetched from the kitchen, and the technique was demonstrated for me. Turns out, when you insert the knife blade into the slot, it bumps up against the coins inside, turning them on their sides, so that they can then fall through the slot when the piggy bank is held upside down.

So really, not so magical. Still. Who would have thought a not-at-all-sharp knife would be the key to opening a stopper-less piggy bank?

I think I need more sleep.
