One of my Christmas gifts this year was a cookbook. Perhaps there’s a message there.

Anyhoo, I finally decided to crack it open and try out a new recipe. Trying new recipes is both exciting and nerve wracking. Will it turn out? Will it be tasty? Will I get all the steps right? Are there any weird timing idiosyncracies that are obvious to people with a smidgen of cooking skill, and thus escape my sphere of awareness?

I tried a fish dish – some lightly pan fried red snapper fillets served over a bed of onions cooked with red peppers and then mixed in with baby spinach, with a honey balsamic vinaigrette drizzled over top, and some cheater rice on the side – that Uncle Ben’s takes-two-minutes-in-the-microwave stuff. It turned out decently enough that I’m not averse to making it again.

Even if, as I was cooking it, there was a lot of ‘Argh, hot!’ going on as I got spattered by hot oil as the fish was frying. No permanent damage.

I wonder what culinary adventure I’ll embark on tomorrow? Maybe a magical journey to McD’s is all I’ll want…..
