Anyways, I was channel surfing the other night while at a friend’s place, and stumbled upon a documentary about chimpanzees. I was intrigued, because it was supposed to be about the ‘darker side’ of chimpanzees. Well, chimpanzees are cute, so I stopped to watch for a bit.

It started out gently enough – lots of footage of chimpanzees being cute, while the narrator told us about how similar they are to humans – they are intelligent, and groups of chimps seem to develop a culture, where when one chimp learns a useful trick he teaches it to others, and the skills are passed down from one generation to another. The narrator even tells us that some scientists believe chimpanzees have a sense of wonder, as we are shown images of a chimpanzee gazing up at a star-filled sky.

Things turn darker then, though, and we are told that adult male chimpanzees tend to be aggressive. This, combined with the fact that they are so much stronger than humans of similar maturity, makes them supremely dangerous. This I sort of knew. What I didn’t know, though, is that there have been documented cases of chimpanzees attacking humans. We’re shown some newspaper clippings about cases of wild chimpanzees attacking and killing infants in Africa, and then they bring out this zoo employee who survived a chimpanzee attack. She was bringing a tray of food for him, and there was just enough space between the bottom of the bars of his enclosure and the floor for him to quickly reach out and grab hold of her jacket sleeve, and then drag her arm underneath towards him. Once he had a hold of her, he bit her. Once he tasted blood, he was seized with a sort of bloodlust, and he proceeded to eat her thumb, her index finger, and a substantial chunk of her forearm! O.o

I think, the next time I visit a zoo, I will be keeping a mindful distance from the chimpanzee enclosures if there isn’t a hefty layer of glass separating us from them!!!
