Okay guys, I realize I haven’t been posting as much as I usually do… and you’ve been missing out on my fascinating stories (j/k!!) and some decent porn!! To make up for that, here’s a super long post about who what I’ve done in Vancouver and Victoria.. and an awesome gallery of Andi Pink!!!

So, we went to see the Butchart Gardens just outside of Victoria, B.C., and if everything falls into place I may get some piccies up here. ^_^ We arrived at the park at about 4 PM, walked through the whole thing, then at about 6:30 PM or so we left in search of dinner, and returned around 8:30 PM or thereabouts to explore the gardens again, as they light up the park once the sun goes down, which gives the place an entirely different look.

There are five main areas to the park, and the place is set up so that you can proceed through them sequentially without backtracing your steps. You start with the Sunken Garden, which was the site of a quarry used to feed a cement plant – one of the two smokestacks from that plant is still standing. Next up is the Rose Garden, followed by the Japanese Garden, which then leads you to the Star Pond. Walk around the Star Pond, and you arrive at the Italian Garden, which then spits you out to the park entrance, where the visitor’s information booth, plant identification centre, and gift shop are all located – how convenient! ^_^

It was beautiful. Of course, when you’re talking about a park full of professionally tended flowers perhaps that goes without saying. Now, I must say that one thing that I found particularly frustrating is that, with the exception of the Rose Garden, none of the plants are labeled. Instead, they give you a little picture guide booklet so that you can look up the names of things. This isn’t the best solution, though, for a number of reasons. First off, they organized the book by plant type – flower vs. tree vs. shrub – and then each section is further organized by the colour of the blooms. This means that if you’re staring at a particular flower, and for any given reason you can’t tell whether it’s growing on a flower plant or a shrub or a tree – before you mock me, consider that some of the specimens in the park are in hanging baskets or planted on unseen terraces, so some of those things hanging from smallish baskets are really shrubs, and just because those flowers are up higher than others doesn’t mean that they’re growing on shrubs.
Anyway, I digress, you have to flip through the book a fair bit to find what you’re looking for. The second problem is that many plants produce blossoms in a variety of colours, so trying to match up picture with blossom isn’t always straightforward. Third, even with the book organized in this way, you still have to do a lot of flipping around to find whatever you’re looking for. Fourth, and most problematic in my opinion, is that the booklet isn’t exhaustive – it contains only a selection of the ‘most popular’ plants. So there were several plants that remain a mystery to me because I couldn’t find them in the book. While I recognize that having little signposts everywhere would clutter up the look of the gardens, I still think it’d be nice for those who want to know, and not horribly obtrusive for those who simply want to enjoy the flowers.

One consequence of my visit to the gardens, though, has been a flash of horticultural inspiration. While I acknowledge that I could never ever create a garden like theirs, seeing all those flowers in bloom made me want to try growing some at home. So, in the gift shop, I bought some seeds – I bought some columbine seeds, because the blooms should be pretty and they are perennial, so if I plant a basket or planter of them to go outside on the railing, they should come back after the winter. I also bought some tobacco plant seeds, again because the blooms should be pretty, but these are annuals. I think, though, that these will be inside plants, maybe on a window shelf in office space or something. I’m hesitant to plant them outside since the seeds need light to germinate, so you can’t put lots of soil on top, which would probably make them very tempting snacks for birds….

Given that it’s now late August – yipe! – these seeds are going to sit in their envelopes for a while. But I can start poking about looking for fall clearance sales on flower pots and such. ^_^

It could happen – maybe there’s a little green thumb hiding under all that black? ^_^

Bah… I’ve type so much, and really only covered one day – but that’s enough for now… get back to the porn!

I agree with your idea on the little signs. Did the park have a suggestion box? Speaking of signs,do you think it is possibe that Brea could hold up a fan sign for us to see?

I went to the Rose Garden back in 1981. Some chick and I saw Foghat and Devo, and went across the street to Ringer’s Roost up on 18th Street. This was just before the Fair was about to start, so we just went to the Gate and bought our America tix for that Labor Day. So yeah, I hear you when oyu say the Rose Garden is amazing.
