I think the solution may be salads.

Big salads. With some focaccia bread on the side, with olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette for dipping. Last night I made up some quinoa and avocado salad – baby spinach, tomato, a wee bit of red onion, quinoa, and avocado, all tossed in a lemon and olive oil dressing. I had a biggish portion, with some bread on the side, and after the meal I felt satisfied – not wondering where my main course was. True, I have to run the stove to cook the quinoa for this, but I don’t have to stand there in the heat attending to it – unlike, say, a stir fry.

This could work. Granted, I can’t have the same salad everyday – I really like this salad, but having it everyday would probably foster a deep burning hatred for all that is wonderful about it – but the idea has merit. Toss a few actual cooked meals in here and there, when the glorious summer sun doesn’t suck out the few culinary inclinations I have, and I could have a very healthy caloric intake this summer.

Of course, I’ll still treat myself to takeout here and there. It’s all about balance, doncha know.

The end of the semester, that is.

Last year at this time I had much more on my plate than this year. Yet if I had to compare, I would say that I feel more burnt out now than I did then. Perhaps the adrenaline of it all just kept me going in a sort of numbed state, so that I didn’t have a chance to feel burnt out because I wasn’t giving myself a chance to feel anything at all. This was, after all, the time of seven day work weeks. I had a lot of bean bags in the air that I was juggling. It may be that one hits a point where all one’s energy is just focused on keeping everything moving, and you sort of stop noticing just how much you have going on.

Of course, now that I think back a bit more carefully, I do recall feeling rather completely and utterly exhausted last year.

Okay. So I guess this year is better after all.

Still.

The end of the semester is near, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the tail end of it on its way out. No vacation in sight for a little while yet, but still. Loving the idea of being done with this term.

I think odours need to be pretty strong before I detect them, and I am no good with complex scents – everything just blends together, and I cannot pick out the subtler notes of the component fragrances. Dr. Pepper, for instance, is said to be a combination of 23 distinct flavours, and I know people who are able to detect many of the individual components with a few sniffs. Me? The only identifiable component that I can nose out is cherry, though I wouldn’t label the fragrance in its entirety as cherry. I would probably use the term sweet to describe it, though. Well. I got The Beatles Rock Band. I’ve finished the story line in that one, meaning I’ve played every song that came on the disc. I’ve even purchased some of the additional songs available in the PlayStation Store, and have developed an appreciation for Beatlemania – granted, I’m forty years late to the party. In what may be Beatle blasphemy, but is par for the course for me, I don’t think I have a favourite.

Having pretty well exhausted the playlist for The Beatles Rock Band, you’d think I’d attack what remains of Rock Band 2 with renewed zeal.

Instead, I got Lego Rock Band.

I haven’t gotten very far in it yet. So far it’s fun, like the others. The graphics are sort of overly cutesy, not in a flowers and puppies sort of way, but in an aimed at five year olds sort of way. I don’t know why this is happening, but I can’t ignore the observation that this waking up thing started right as I started regularly popping my vites in the evening.

The weirdest thing? I’m not super tired in the morning. Sure, I’m groggy, which is typical for me for the first ten minutes or so, but after that I’m fine – and I don’t get sleepy throughout the day either. I don’t hit a 2 PM must-nap-before-I-pass-out kind of wall. You’d never guess I was short 1 – 2 hours of sleep. Mostly I just spend those awake hours irritated that I’m freaking awake, but can’t do anything – I worry that if I start actually doing something, I’ll wake up even more, and then I’ll be trying to get through my day with only three or four hours of sleep. So I stay in bed, and mildly fume about wasting all this time.

Attempt to fix problem #1: try to take vitamins earlier in the day. We shall see….

Today was supposed to be super productive, but a few things conspired against me there. At this point I pretty well stopped buying the frozen fries, opting instead to purchase five pound bags of potatoes. When I want fries, I scrub up a few potatoes, slice ‘em up, and give ‘em a frying. Homemade shoestring fries are good, homemade thick cut fries are awesome.

As much as I love my fries, I haven’t actually made any in quite a long time. I think I bought a bag of potatoes in January or so, and have yet to use a single potato – in fact, I’m pretty sure that I need to just throw that bag away and buy a new one, somehow I don’t think those potatoes are still good. I’m sort of afraid to look – I keep the potatoes tucked away in a dark corner, out of sight… I don’t think they’re sentinent yet….

And even though I know I can make super yummy fries at home for less than a dollar for a huge enough-for-six-people dish?

There’s still something deeply satisfying about McDonald’s fries. Oh yum!!!!
