In 2007, I was in Ottawa for a weekend, and I stayed at the Hotel Indigo Ottawa. It had just opened, I think the guy at the front desk told me two months or so prior to my stay? You just wander in there, have your shower, and wander back out again.

I remember being able to see myself in the shower in the bathroom mirror. That was surreal.

I remember thinking that I was going to manage to flood the hotel room when I had my shower, since there was no door to close. It didn’t happen.

I’ve since stayed in maybe one or two other hotels that had this sort of shower setup, and every time, my reaction is the same. I see the enclosure. I think it’s odd, and worry about making a mess. I have my shower, make no mess, and am disproportionately pleased. I contemplate getting one of these in my own bathroom.

Sadly, I think a big part of the appeal is being able to see myself in the mirror as I shower. I understand that this is not critical to a successful shower experience – after all, the vast majority of the showers I’ve had in my life have not been in one of these fancy enclosures, and I would argue that I’m a reasonably proficient showerer. But being able to see yourself as you shower? It adds a level of entertainment to the procedure.

This morning, I woke up to the aroma of chili in my home. Gotta say, it’s not a bad way to wake up.

Eagerly, I bounced into the kitchen to see how things were progressing. I was more than a little alarmed when I looked into the crockpot and saw a mixture that did not look the way my crockpot chili usually looks. It was drier on top, and darker too – so dark that at first I thought that it had perhaps gotten burnt. My panic centres broadcast a pessimistic message – Oh no, I’ve ruined it!

Then, I gave the contents a stir, and the appearance improved dramatically. I breathed a sigh of relief, and then walked away.

Hours later, I was ready to tuck in to have chili for dinner. I gave it another stir, dished it out over a bed of corn chips, sprinkled some shredded cheese on top, then settled in for my meal. Oh, and there was quinoa salad to go with it too.

When the chili has been cooking for 12 hours on lower heat, and has been kept piping hot in the crockpot for some hours after that, the spice from the chili powder is more well developed – there was more heat in this chili than there usually is, without me having tinkered with the spice content. That being said, the chili was not significantly better than the 6 hours on high heat chili.

So, I think this is a good solution for weekend chilis, when I tend to stay up later and wake up earlier. For weekdays, I can continue doing the single-day chili, without worrying that I am making an inferior chili.

I spent a bit of time playing flOw today.

This game came to my attention a couple of years ago, and I tried it out on the web, but I didn’t really get it. I had noticed it became available on the PS3 sort of recently, and so I decided to give it another try when it was a free download. The PS3 version uses the motion sensing abilities of the controllers, so you tilt your controller around to make your wormy go.

And I thought, Gosh, I should really eat those soon.

And then I realized that they’ve been sitting on the shelf, with the bags open like that, for months. Probably since last summer.

At which point, I took a deep breath, picked up all the sad leftovers bags, and unceremoniously pitched them. I’m not about to eat them after they’ve spent so long stored in non-sealed packaging. Stale chips are gross. They shouldn’t taste like peanuts. Forget it. Chips aren’t too pricey. I can get more.

And then, you know, not eat them.

Ignoring, of course, the other treats for me that I’ve already purchased and are coming my way. Like all those Crocs. More recently, however, something’s been weirdly amiss. I’ve been having the weirdest trouble perpendicular parking – I approach the spot, take aim and start turning in, then realize Whoops, I didn’t do the approach right, stop, reverse a bit, then try to correct the approach. At this point, I am usually pretty embarrassed and flustered, which makes whatever skills I might possess just abandon me entirely – I end up crooked in the stall, and sometimes I can tell and try to back out a bit so I can straighten out a bit, but I still end up crooked, though hopefully less crooked. Something about my perception of where the car begins and ends has gone off within the past month – I remember having a bit of trouble about a week ago, and honestly haven’t driven much at all in the past month and a half. It could just be an out of practice thing.

I sort of hope it is. I hate being all spazzy when I try to park my car, and it really bugs me when it’s still not right after all my attempts at adjusting it, but because my perception is off, I can’t tell until I’ve shut off the engine and stepped out of the car, and at that point it seems just beyond humiliating to have to get back in and fire it up again to do some more micro adjusting. I just lock up and walk away at a brisk pace, hoping no one is watching me, and hoping even more fervently that the people parked around me are not too careless in opening their car doors.

The way things are now, I’m consciously avoiding situations where I would need to parallel park, even the more usual curb on the passenger side parallel park. I’d probably end up perpendicular with the tail end of my car blocking off a lane of traffic.
