It’s really obvious to me that some shenanigans have been afoot when this happens, because I’m very rigidly in the habit of tucking my chair right up against my desk before I leave for the night. The first time I found the chairs swapped, I thought that maybe I hadn’t tucked my chair away properly, that it had been closer to the shared computer and then she’d snagged it to use the computer, then realized she’d stolen my chair but was sitting in it, and just shoved hers over towards my desk. This morning, though, I found the chairs swapped again, and I know I did stow my chair properly, so there was definitely an intentional switcheroo.

This annoyed me. More than it probably should have. I switched the chairs back, all the while thinking indignantly, They’re the same freaking model of chair. If you like the way mine is adjusted so much, you can darn well adjust yours to something that suits you more than the present settings!

I carried that little bit of sourness with me throughout the day, and then earlier this evening, I was sharing the story – well, complaining, really.

The question came up: How did you know the chairs had been swapped?

Because the settings were wrong in the chair that was left at my desk. Also, because there’s a couple of small snags in the fabric on my chair, and the chair I found in the vicinity of my desk this morning was snag-free.

Which prompted a new question: So why don’t you just snag the better, snag-free chair? Just change the settings until you like it, and you’re done.

I had no response for this. Logically, it’s exactly what I should do. Even if switcherooing continues, what would I care? I’d have both chairs set the way I like them, so in any event, I’d be seated comfortably.

Trouble is, I’m feeling stubborn about it all because it really galls me that this woman has the nerve to just go ahead and take my chair when I’m not around. It’s the complete disregard for my territorial boundary. Sure, the chair isn’t technically and truly mine – I don’t own it – but it is the chair that goes with the desk that I was assigned, and that I keep all my stuff in and on.

I’m also now starting to wonder what she’s finding so unacceptable about her chair. I had initially assumed it was just the positioning of things and she hadn’t bothered to work out how to readjust it, but it’s occurring to me that there might be something genuinely wrong with that chair.

That, however, makes her willingness to just take my chair and cast her reject chair off on me all the more infuriating.
