For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a night owl. I’d stay up super late, sometimes doing homework, other times just tinkering on something, or reading a book, and then I’d sleep in – provided, of course, that I didn’t need to get up early for school the next day. Having to get up for school didn’t encourage me to go to bed before midnight, but it would keep me from staying up past 3 or 4 AM.

I used to be able to get by on much less sleep. Now, it messes me up. Not in the sense that I’m grouchy and tired all day, though. It messes with my sleep patterns.

Falling asleep is almost never the issue. It’s sleeping through the night. I’ve been waking up partway through the night on an annoyingly regular basis for a while now. I’ve blinked into consciousness at all sorts of strange hours, when I’ve attempted to go to bed at a reasonable hour so I’m not trying to function on three or four hours’ sleep. It is incredibly frustrating to be awake before you want to be awake, and then be unable to get back to sleep.

What’s worse, I’ve begun to suspect that an erratic sleep pattern may be the cause. My bedtime is subject to some variability, based on my whims and what my scheduled obligations will tolerate. Meaning one day, I might have to wake up at 6:30 AM to get to work by 8 AM, and the next day I’ll allow myself to sleep in till noon. I think I’ve been erratic enough that my body has become thoroughly confused about when it should be sleepy, and when it should be awake.

I remember, a while back, a friend of mine was jetlagged from some major travel – she found herself staying up until the wee hours of the morning and then wanting to sleep until mid afternoon. I remember her saying she needed to shock her system back into an appropriate cycle by staying up until the next appropriate sleep cycle should start. So she’d get up at her usual mid to late afternoon time, then just stay awake until her desired bedtime of the following day. I honestly don’t remember if she actually did it. But I’m sitting here thinking the idea might have some merit.

Or maybe I just don’t want to go to bed yet….

Robin Hood was oh-so-clever, and so he was a fox; Little John was strong and fierce, so he was a bear; Prince John was a sniveling coward, so he was a lion without its mane; King Richard was a brave noble lion, and thus he had an impressive full mane. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but then again, I’m the sort of person who tends to miss these sorts of things, so probably I’m not imagining it, and it’s painfully obvious to everyone else on the planet.

In any event, now, even as an adult, every time I hear the name Robin Hood, I think of a fox in a green tunic, with a great big brown bear in a darker green tunic as his sidekick. I know these are not the actual characters of the legends and stories.

Yet, when I went to see Robin Hood in theatres today (yesterday?), throughout the movie, something felt not quite right, a bit off. Don’t get me wrong – it’s not that I didn’t enjoy the movie. It just seemed wrong somehow.

I have a sneaking suspicion that my brain refused to accept this version of the story because it did not feature animals who on occasion burst into song.

I’m not sure how I feel about that….

For tonight, I decided to give Green Beans Guido a try.

Now, the recipe calls for one 10 oz. package of frozen green beans. I thought this was sort of curious. Certainly, it was a choice made on the basis of convenience – frozen beans can be bought well in advance, and are more likely to be just kicking around in the freezer ready for use at any time. Frozen beans are okay, but fresh green beans just taste so much better – they have that fresh crispness to them, but it’s not just texture, you can actually taste a difference. In the interest of giving this dish its best possible shot, I opted to swap out frozen for fresh.

I discovered, however, that there is more than just handiness to the choice of frozen over fresh here. First off, there’s far more prep work involved with fresh green beans. You have to wash them, which is a pain, especially when you’re being stubborn like me and refusing to use the colander to wash them because you don’t want to wash the colander later. Silly reason, but there it was. After they’re washed, then you need to cut them into bite size pieces, which has to be done with small collections of beans – you can’t grab a big handful and just hack away. It took me nearly 15 minutes just to get the beans ready for cooking!

In the end, the dish was quite tasty. I enjoyed it, I really savoured that fresh crispness in the beans. Next time, though, I’m going to have to give it a really hard think before I decide whether or not to take the frozen route…. Laziness will probably win!!!

Furthermore, if a craving is due to a deficiency, then shouldn’t the craving persist until that need has been satisfied? By the time I got home, my desire for Oreos had passed, and we can’t attribute that to me having eaten something else, because I hadn’t. By the time I got home, I wanted brandy beans – we will clumsily avoid discussing what it means that I wanted those after working – but I’m out now, and I’m trying to sort out where I can score some more. They seem to be something of a seasonal treat. I may have to wait till next Christmas. At which time stash quantities will be purchased. Yes yes….

This land also requires that I make myself presentable and leave my home at precise times of day, which interferes most obnoxiously with sleeping in and lazing around.

Oh well. Until someone decides that I should be paid for my gaming time, I will have to grin and bear it. It’s not so bad. I don’t hate my job. I’ll readjust to the working schedule.
