My biggest hangup is that I have a really hard time making small talk. I know what I find interesting, but I’m also keenly aware that others may not share my interests. Being aware of these issues usually results in me hiding in a corner during social gatherings, cautiously eyeing everyone else in the room and generally being socially awkward.

A friend of mine is trying to start up her own small business. She’s going to be making custom-scented lotions out of her home – she found herself a supplier for an unscented lotion base that she likes, and she’ll be mixing up the scents herself, I guess. I haven’t really talked to her about it a lot. Really, the only reason I know she’s doing it is because she sent me an email inviting me to her launch party. As it turns out, I’m going to be out of town the weekend of the launch party, so I can’t go. I’d like to go and be a good friend, and help her get things off the ground, but at the same time, I’m relieved, because she’s spreading the word through all her social networks, which is a smart thing to do when you’re starting a small business, but for me it means that her party will be full of people I don’t know. Many many strangers. I would know only her, and maybe her brother if he’s there, but I don’t know him very well, so I’d try to stick close to her, which is silly, because I’m an adult and it would be weird for me to suddenly try to be her shadow, but I’m not good at talking to new people a lot of the time, so when I’m consciously trying to not be her shadow I’d be just lurking in a corner, looking shifty and strange. I’m getting a bit anxious just thinking about it.

When I was younger, my parents were very consistent in warning me of the perils of stranger danger. I wonder if this is the result of all that schooling….

When the bride was brought out by her father, she and the groom reached out and touched hands briefly at the altar, and the great-aunt noticed this and pointed this out to the assembled audience with a big grin, saying, “You’re not allowed to touch each other yet.” The bride and groom had a few moments of awkward clumsiness as they started in taking the seven steps of the Hindu ceremony together. After the seven steps, they returned to the altar, and we all heard the groom ask his great-aunt, “Are we married yet?”

Unfortunately, something more upsetting went wrong on Saturday. Apparently, the caterers misjudged the size of the kitchens at the venue, and realized too late that they needed more space in order to prepare the required amount of food, and went back to their own facility to do so. This means that the hors d’oeuvres (samosas and tandoori chicken) were about half an hour late. But that wasn’t the worst of it. The dinner itself – an Indian buffet – was nearly two hours late. We were supposed to eat at 7 PM. I believe the food arrived at 8:45 PM.

Now, I’m a pretty easy going person – I didn’t get upset by the lateness of the food. That being said, I strongly suspect that others did – I saw the bride and groom’s bosses pacing about antsily, looking a bit tense, and the bride’s grandfather was pretty cranky looking. Of course, he’s used to having his dinner at 5 PM, and going to bed at about 9:30 PM, so this delay was really throwing off his rhythm. To his credit, he didn’t yell at anyone, or make a scene, or even get unfriendly. But he did not look impressed.

On the plus side, the wedding cake was good. I was lucky, and got a slice of a chocolate layer – apparently, there was a vanilla layer too that wasn’t as nice. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the icing was actually really good – sometimes you get weird gross icing on bakery cakes, but this one was great, all sweet and buttery. Later, I was surprised to discover that my cake was all gone, but some icing remained on my plate. I ate a little bit of it by itself, but left a good sized chunk. I guess I’m my father’s daughter after all – there is such a thing as too much icing.

Our party favours were little carved wooden elephants. Everybody got one. They’re cute, but I think I would have preferred a little chocolate.

Anyways, after Jim’s question about my natural hair colour, I started thinking about my hair…..
The last time I had my hair cut was in August 2007. Mid August 2007….

As you might imagine, my hair has grown considerably since its last grooming session. After the cut, it hit at my collarbone. Now the tips reach about four inches past the collarbone. Also, the shortest layers in my hair now hit at about chin length.

One nice thing about wearing your hair long is that you can sneak by with fewer haircuts than what stylists recommend. Of course, I suspect that you only need to get your hair cut every four to six weeks if you wear it in a very short style, in which case even a half inch of growth can make things look unkempt.

At any rate, I’m starting to look forward to my next haircut. I haven’t made an appointment for it yet or anything like that – I just know it’s coming sometime in the next two months. ^_^ I’m not planning to make any big changes or anything either – just get it all trimmed up and de-shagged (Austin Powers Baby!!!). Maybe I’ll have to make it happen sooner rather than later. ^_^ Probably no colour either – although I have played with the idea of adding a strip of red… or pink…. or purple!!

Anyways, a few years ago, I stumbled upon a set of notepads in the clearance bin at a Michaels’ craft store. It was tasty, but it didn't hold any shape - the grains only stuck together very very lightly.

A while later, I mentioned this to my mother in passing, saying that it may have been that I put in too much butter, since I didn't really measure, I just guesstimated. She thought a beat, then asked me how much marshmallow I put in. I told her - her recipe called for 1/4 cup, so since I was making a double batch, I put in 1/2 cup.

"Well, that's the problem! I put in 1/2 cup for a single batch!"

So she never updated her recipe card, and when I asked for the recipe, she had my sister copy out that recipe card and email it..

I wonder if she updated her recipe card after this little incident.

Yesterday, I posted about my new drugs to banish my persistent cough – an inhaler. She showed me how to use it in the examining room, and I took my first dose right then and there. I attributed it to irritated, dry skin, which has been a bit of a problem for me for the past two weeks or so. Around lunchtime, I noticed my upper arms were itching a lot. Again, I figured it was just dry skin, but I pushed up my sleeves and saw that red spots were creeping down into my elbow pits. Weird.

By late afternoon, I was in a bit of a state – my upper arms itched like crazy and the spots had congregated into full out rashes, my thighs and kneepits were now itching and were now decorated with more of the spots – angry little red welts. My chest had broken out in little spots too, and my neck was looking in pretty bad shape.

By bedtime, I had some spots on my forearms, down the backs of my calves, in a patch in the small of my back, stretching in a band across my stomach, and some in the palms of my hands. At this point, I was certain I was having an allergic reaction to something. Since the only new thing introduced to my system was that inhaler, I skipped my bedtime dosage, and took an antihistamine instead (Aerius) to stave off sleeping itchies.

This morning when I woke up, I had more welts on my forearms, more spots on my chest and stomach, my lower back and upper back were both spotty, and I had welts on the backs of both of my hands. And I was itchy. Everywhere.

Back to the doctor I went. Got to see the same doctor as yesterday. She took one look at me and said, “Wow.” She agreed with me that it was an allergic reaction, but she disagreed as to the source, claiming that the inhaler drug simply doesn’t cause reactions like this, and saying that since these “target lesions” are all over my body, this is a sign of something systemic. She also said that since it had been over 24 hours since my first dose of the inhaler, those compounds should be completely clear of me, which made sense to me. Her take on the situation? I’ve developed an allergy to the antibiotics I’ve been taking – a member of the penicillin family. And even though the horrible outbreak coincides with the start of the inhaler, that makes sense to me too, because I stopped with the inhaler, and yet everything continued to get worse overnight – and crucially, I didn’t stop with the antibiotics.

So she told me to stop with the antibiotics, and I might as well stop with the inhaler too, just to make sure. She then gave me a prescription for a new drug – a steroid used to treat allergic reactions, so no Olympic competitions for me for a while. ^_^ She gave me five tablets – I’m supposed to take one a day. I’ve taken one today, and so far, I’m still all welty and blotchy and grotesque looking. T-T We’ll see how things progress tomorrow.

In the meantime, I have to be vigilant and on the alert for shortness of breath, fever, or blistering of any of the welts. If any of these symptoms appear, then I have to get myself to a hospital. O.o

Oh yes, and of course, I’m still coughing. >_< I just want to be normal again!

If I’m using the oven, or the microwave, I do. Actually, I try to keep an eye on the clock when using the deep fryer and the panini press as well. For stovetop things, though, I sort of wing it.

Usually it turns out okay. I mean, things like canned soup are easy – all you do is heat it until it’s hot, but not boiling, and dish it out. Stir fry is pretty easy too, since you can tell by looking at the meat and veggies whether they’re cooked or not.

On the weekend, though, it came out not so okay. I was making fried eggs. I looked at them, and thought they might be done, but then remembered that the last time I had fried eggs, they were just a little bit underdone. So I left them on for a bit longer. Apparently, that bit longer was much more than I needed, because they were way overcooked when I removed them from the burner – the yolk was completely cooked through. In fact, I ended up pitching them and trying a second time, and those eggs came out fine.

I suppose that using an egg timer or some other timing device would solve the problem. But it somehow seems wrong to be using a timer to do this. Like cooking is supposed to involve some intuitive creativity, and running everything off a clock somehow wrecks that. Or maybe that only applies when you actually know how to cook. Someday, I’ll know how to fry an egg, mishap free. ^_^
