Last night I made up some quinoa and avocado salad – baby spinach, tomato, a wee bit of red onion, quinoa, and avocado, all tossed in a lemon and olive oil dressing. I had a biggish portion, with some bread on the side, and after the meal I felt satisfied – not wondering where my main course was. True, I have to run the stove to cook the quinoa for this, but I don’t have to stand there in the heat attending to it – unlike, say, a stir fry.

This could work. Granted, I can’t have the same salad everyday – I really like this salad, but having it everyday would probably foster a deep burning hatred for all that is wonderful about it – but the idea has merit. Toss a few actual cooked meals in here and there, when the glorious summer sun doesn’t suck out the few culinary inclinations I have, and I could have a very healthy caloric intake this summer.

Of course, I’ll still treat myself to takeout here and there. It’s all about balance, doncha know.

Collecting these earns you side trophies in the game.

All this treasure hunting got me wondering how good at it I’d be in real life. I like puzzles. I like the idea of secret passageways and vaults, and following a trail of clues that need to be deciphered using whatever cleverness and wits I possess.

At the end of the day, though, I think I’d probably be a pretty big failure as a treasure hunter, because I wouldn’t actually have the guts to go out looking for it. These hidden tombs and chambers are all creepy, creepy places, full of harmless but still frightening creepy crawlies at best, and foul-smelling mystery substances and not-so-harmless creepy crawlies at worst. You get dirty and smelly, plus there’s the element of risk in scrabbling about over ancient structures that predate even the shakiest set of building codes. You need to be sharp, with fantastic reflexes, so you don’t get caught in ancient booby traps. I’d probably end up dead pretty fast – either death by booby trap, death by fall in unseen crevasse, death by fall from unsafe bridge, or death by fright upon being greeted by something icky.

The idea of ancient artifacts and exotic locales is appealing. But I’d far prefer that everything be cleaned and de-dangered before I start traipsing through. Maybe camera friendly, with flush toilets…

For someone who’s been known to get a bit obsessive and weird over details, you’d think that would extend to knowing where other objects are in the world around me. Apparently, it does not.

I can’t believe that January 2010 is nearly over and done.

I don’t know why this is happening, but I can’t ignore the observation that this waking up thing started right as I started regularly popping my vites in the evening.

The weirdest thing? I’m not super tired in the morning. Sure, I’m groggy, which is typical for me for the first ten minutes or so, but after that I’m fine – and I don’t get sleepy throughout the day either. I don’t hit a 2 PM must-nap-before-I-pass-out kind of wall. You’d never guess I was short 1 – 2 hours of sleep. Mostly I just spend those awake hours irritated that I’m freaking awake, but can’t do anything – I worry that if I start actually doing something, I’ll wake up even more, and then I’ll be trying to get through my day with only three or four hours of sleep. So I stay in bed, and mildly fume about wasting all this time.

Attempt to fix problem #1: try to take vitamins earlier in the day. We shall see….

I was surprised at how non-painful the jab was – especially after having seen the length of the needle itself, which it needed to be since the vaccine is delivered deep into a muscle. I was quite glad that I got stuck before the child who threw a fit when he realized he was getting a jab – the clinic rang out with his terrified screams. I did have the misfortune of seeing one boy burst into tears when he got his before I had had mine – nothing like the pained expression on a child’s face to give you a little adrenaline kick when you realize you’re about to get exactly what he got, and you’re also a very wimpy person.

When the nurse asked me if I had any egg or poultry allergies, I told her about my troubles with eggs – how if I eat eggs, even the small amount on French toast, they make my tummy sore, but strangely I can tolerate them fine in baked goods. She figured I wouldn’t have any issues with the vaccine, but just to be sure, she wanted me to stay at the clinic for half an hour after my shot, so that if something should go wrong, there would be medical personnel nearby to help me. I didn’t much like the possibility of having an adverse reaction as I drove myself home, so I obediently sat in the waiting area for the prescribed length of time, listening to the chatter of people, infrequently punctuated by an upset child. That one terrified kid sounded like he was having a very traumatic experience.

And then I remembered a story my aunt told me, from when one of my cousins was a toddler, getting his booster shots. She couldn’t bear to be in the room with him, so she left him with the nurses and waited outside. She told me she knew the moment he had gotten his shot, because she heard him wail in pain, and then he tearfully hollered at the nurse, “Go away!” She said it made her cry.
