Anyway. I’m disappointed, but I will not cease to exist as of 4:30 PM tomorrow, so I have to figure out what comes next. I have to keep moving forward.

When I went grocery shopping on Tuesday, a little voice in my head said, Hey! You should buy some fish for dinner this week. It’s good for you. And I thought in reply, Okay, I like fish. So I bought some frozen salmon and some fresh red snapper.

The snapper got eaten last night – I followed a recipe from one of the many cookbooks I’ve received as a gift. I cooked up some onion and red pepper in olive oil, then mixed them with some spinach so that the spinach wilted. Then, in the same pan, I pan fried the snapper. When it was done, I laid it on top of the veggie mix, then heated up some balsamic vinegar and honey to make a sauce for the fish. It was tasty.

But, the thing about cooking fish and enjoying fish is that fish smells. When you’re smelling the cooked fish, and about to eat it, it smells good. A few hours later, though, that fish smell takes on an ugly edge to it.

And it is a persistent sort of smell.

I took the garbage out last night, before going to bed, thinking I was ridding myself of the fish smell. Nope. It lingered. I had lit a candle while the fish was cooking, but it wasn’t powerful enough. Today, I opened windows and turned on the hood fan on the stove and relit that candle, and I thought after about half an hour things were good. Nope. Went outside for a bit, came back in and was greeted by a wall of fish smell.

When dinnertime rolled around, I thought perhaps I could finally rid myself of the fish smell by adding more fish smell, but taking better smell preventing measures. I cooked up that frozen salmon, with the candle lit and the stove hood fan going pretty well the whole time it was in the oven.

And? Well, I don’t smell fish anymore.

But I might be used to it. We’ll see how I feel about things in the morning.

Anyways, today was the first checkup….

First thing this morning, I was back at the eye clinic for a follow up checkup on my eyes. I saw a technician first, who checked my visual acuity using the usual ‘read the smallest line of letters that you can’ procedure. The haze from the monitor used to display the letters in the darkened room introduced a new level of complexity to the task. Still, he told me that my vision was good enough to allow me to drive, legally, without corrective lenses. For the first time in my life. I got a letter to have the adequate lenses condition removed from my driver’s license. He also told me that my left eye was better than my right eye.

Next up, a visit with the in-clinic eye doctor, who shone some lights in my eyes and looked with a scope, reading out technical jibberish that didn’t mean much to me to her assistant. She then told me that my eyes were having a bit of a reaction to the procedure – particularly the right eye. Basically, there’s some swelling going on. She didn’t seem concerned, so I don’t think that means that my eyes are going to just burst out of their sockets. She did, however, give me a stronger corticosteroid solution to drop into my right eye. Instead of being on a relatively free, loosey-goosey drop schedule of four drops spread out over the day’s waking hours, now I have to drop this solution in every two hours while awake over the next two days. To make things complicated, my left eye is staying on the original four drops a day schedule in the meantime. Oh, and I’m still putting in antibiotic drops in both eyes, four times a day. Plus artificial tears whenever I feel the need.

My next follow up check is on Wednesday morning.

Oh, and in case you were curious, my left eye now sees 20/20. My right eye sees 20/30, which explains why last night I figured I probably see 20/30 since my right eye is so dominant that my brain pretty much dismisses all information brought in by Leftie. Rightie definitely rules here. I’m hoping that over the next week or so, Rightie will also be up to 20/20. That being said, I could totally live with my current state of vision – haze and all – for the rest of my life!!! Laser rocks!!!
