But perhaps I hadn’t – maybe that statement had taken place when I was young and tended to form such statements without actually trying the thing I was judging. As an adult, I’ve mocked other adults for doing exactly this – not to their faces, but behind their backs, which might be worse since behind-the-back mocking tends to be of the more vicious variety.

Maybe tofu’s not all bad. Maybe I actually like tofu… Most Asian’s seem to like it.

In the interest of being a fair and sensible adult – and to avoid blatant hypocrisy – I decided that I would try the tofu in this dish, and decide then whether or not I like tofu.

So, I did.

And the result?

Now I know. I don’t like tofu…..

Still, it shouldn’t put me on the naughty list.

I am not a bacon eater.

That being said, I am frequently around bacon eaters – it often seems that I am the only person in the world who won’t eat bacon, but is not a vegetarian.

So when a bacon eater suggested that I fry up some bacon, then flavour it with some maple syrup, I figured why not.

I pulled out my big cast iron fry pan, put it on the stovetop, and turned the big burner on. I got out the bacon – since this was just an experiment, I was going to only make five slices, to be split between two bacon eaters. I got the maple syrup out and at the ready from the fridge.

Once the pan had some heat to it, I added the bacon slices, one at a time. They made some sizzling noises, and stuck to the pan a bit, but they fried up without any big mishaps. As they cooked, they started to spatter a bit, and I got zinged a few times, but no big burns or anything.

Once the bacon looked pretty nearly cooked through – golden brown in spots, no more translucent bits in the dark pink meat bits, still slightly translucent here and there in the lighter coloured bits, but I suspected that was fat, which tends to retain a translucent look to it even when cooked – I added some maple syrup. It bubbled up in the hot pan, I swirled the bacon around in it, then added a bit more, and did some more swirling. The maple syrup bubbled and foamed – and then I detected a distinct aroma.

A distinct burning sugar aroma.

I turned off the heat, fetched a plate, quickly tossed some paper towel onto it, and removed the bacon to the lined plate.

Well. I looked in dismay at the bacon. I could see some rather blackened looking bits where the maple sugar had burnt on, and as I was removing it from the pan, I noticed that each piece had a stiffness to it. These puppies were pretty thoroughly coated in the cooked maple syrup – they were essentially candied. I worried that they would just taste like burnt sugar. I turned my attention back to the pan on the stove, which had started to smoke a bit with the burning sugar, and I put on the fan to suck the smoke out.

I felt bad that I might have utterly wasted five pieces of bacon, and now the bacon eaters would have none. I presented the experiment, and the bacon eaters each picked up a piece and took a somewhat tentative bite.

Then, to my surprise, they both declared it to be the best bacon ever.

So the experiment will be repeated, with a slightly larger batch, and with a few modifications from what I’ve learned tonight. Next time, I’ll turn off the heat and remove the pan from the burner before I add the maple syrup to the cooked bacon, and I’ll have the paper towel lined plate ready beforehand so that I can remove the final product a bit more promptly.

My hair smells a bit like maple bacon now. I kind of like it.

He stashed it sort of behind our tree – it wouldn’t really fit under the tree, the box was too big – and he did so with very little fanfare. There was no gift tag on the box, and I asked him who it was for, and he replied, “It’s a surprise!” Being a selfish young child, I wondered if it was for me. I then figured that it probably wasn’t, since it didn’t have a tag with my name on it – it must be for someone else, and he was hiding it at our house. When my father noticed it and asked about it, my mother told him it belonged to my uncle.

When Christmas morning arrived, my uncle’s gift box was still behind our tree. When we were nearing the end of the unwrapping, my mother then asked me to fetch my uncle’s gift box. I did, and then she instructed me to hand it over to my father. It was a surprise gift for him from her! She had recruited my uncle to help her purchase the gift without my father knowing, since she rarely went shopping without him. He cried out in protest: “Hey! That’s not fair! You weren’t supposed to get me anything! We had a deal!”

Mum just laughed. “Merry Christmas!”

Then my father said, “Well, there is one more surprise under the tree.” I was then instructed to fetch a smallish box from under the tree, again with no label, and to hand this one over to my mother. Apparently, when the big box had arrived, he’d gotten a bit suspicious, and thought he’d better cover his bases with a little something.

Both parents opened their gifts. For my dad, a new down-filled waterproof winter coat. For my mum, a decent-sized box of gourmet chocolates.

And a Merry Christmas was had by all…. I still would have been happier if both presents were for me though!!

Speaking of medical related issues… Retreat!!

Earlier this year, I had some blood drawn for some tests. My father likes this saying. I remember him using it when I was younger – I may have heard it with the same frequency as Life’s not fair – and I know he’s still fond of it to this day.

Last night, I looked at the calendar, and thought I’d better get a move on on my Christmas cards if I want them to arrive at their destinations before, well, Christmas. So today I sat down and pulled out the cards I bought on a 75% off sale at a shop in the Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas, addressed the envelopes, and wrote a nice little message in each card – they were blank inside. I went through my mental list – relatives who typically send me a card, a handful of friends that I don’t see much of and thus don’t expect to see over the holidays but I typically exchange cards with anyhow. I even called up my mother to track down an address for a cousin.

I did this assembly line style, thinking it would speed things along, and I actually wrote in the cards first, then turned to the envelopes.

At which point I discovered that I can’t count.

I ended up with one extra card – when I was going through my mental list of friends, I apparently thought I could send myself a card……

And then I thought, oh, but I’m okay, because I really have four cousins in that one family, so I need five cards for them – except that’s not true either, because one of my cousins lives with my uncle, so I can send the both of them one card.

So I have an extra card. There are a couple of people who may send me a card, in which case I will want to reciprocate, so I won’t declare this mistake to be a complete waste of a very nice, handmade looking little greeting card.

If I don’t send it this year, though, it will be wasted. Because in my infinite wisdom, the message I wrote inside reads Have a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2010!

Maybe I could cut the card in half and use it in the future as a Christmas postcard.

On the bright side, though, my cards are sent out! One thing crossed off the holiday to-do list!!!

The friend had simply said, “Sorry, it’s a family secret.” My cousin was baffled. A family secret? She let it alone, but over the next few dinner parties, that bean dish kept appearing on the table, and my cousin would say appropriately positive things about it and then again ask for the recipe. Each time, the recipe holder would decline. This frustrated my cousin – she just wanted to be able to make this for her own dinners, not sell it to the highest bidder.

So she fought fire with fire. Before their next dinner gathering, she dug through her cookbooks and found a really good recipe for chicken wings that she had. She made them up, served them, and the bean-dish friend gushed appropriately over the wings, and then asked for the recipe. At which point, my cousin said, “I won’t give it to you, but I’ll trade you for your bean dish recipe.”

The friend declined at first. But then she had a few more wings, and couldn’t stand it anymore. The recipes changed hands.

I imagine my cousin did a little victory dance after her friend was no longer in the room.

Oh, and that cookie recipe my co-worker asked for? I’m pretty sure she asked me for it last year – I made the same cookies for another potluck lunch thing – and I did email it to her then….

My cookie jar is nearly empty. It was pretty full after I made those cookies for the potluck last Saturday. One week later, all that remain are three little cookies. Time to bake some more! Well, maybe not till Thursday.

Some of my work colleagues were talking about Christmas baking earlier this past week. No, I wasn’t eavesdropping – I had been part of the conversation, but it was one of those times where the conversation drifts to a place where you no longer have anything to contribute, so you sit and listen and wait for things to come back to a place where you have something to say. We had started out talking about cookies, then they started talking about steps they had to take to ensure that their children didn’t eat all of the Christmas baking before it was served up to guests. Having neither children nor hordes of holiday visitors who needed to be served baked goods, I slipped into listening-only mode.

When I bake up cookies, I only do one kind of cookie, and I do up at most a double batch. That’s lots of cookies, sure, but not in the grand scheme of entertaining. I don’t host big holiday dinners. If I were to do so, I can see how doing the cookie baking the day before or even earlier would be advantageous – baking cookies eats through time like kids through cookies. When I make a double batch of those chocolate cherry cookies, it takes me a good four hours to do it, and that’s with me trying to be as efficient as I can be. That’s four hours that a hostess might need to be spending, oh, I don’t know, preparing a big dinner? If you’re planning on roasting something in the oven, this creates not just a time conflict with cookie baking, but also a space conflict – oven real estate is limited. So I can understand why some might feel the need to do up a great big thwack of Christmas baking and then freeze the majority of it, defrosting as the goodies are needed.

Once, a close family friend made a fruitcake….. My mother liked it, and started making them as well…. I liked fruitcake day because the house smelled all cakey and wonderful. I didn’t like fruitcake day because all those fantastic smells would get me all excited for wonderful cakey goodness, which would fail to materialize, because I don’t like fruitcake. It’s too dense, too heavy, too full of weird bitter things. I remember begging my mother to just make pound cakes and stir in the red and green maraschino cherries, which she did on occasion, so I knew I liked it. I asked her why she couldn’t just make those for Christmas instead of fruitcake. Her reply?

People like fruitcake at Christmas time.

Not me. I’ll be sticking with my cookies.
