As I mentioned, I’ve been reading the Harry Potter books recently. Part of me had been hoping to get through all seven of them by now, but life kept interfering, with its insistence that I actually do real work, so I’m just working my way through the Prisoner of Azkaban now.

Something’s been bothering me a bit though.

Hermione is a very talented and clever witch – intelligent, quick thinker, problem solver, wicked memory, amazing work ethic. All of this comes together to make the girl a veritable encyclopedia of all things pertaining to the world of magic, and she appears to have a real, strong desire to internalize everything.

My question is, how did she get sorted into Gryffindor? Or, perhaps more to the point, why didn’t she get sorted into Ravenclaw?

If Ravenclaw is the house that prioritizes intelligence, cleverness, and the pursuit of knowledge, well, isn’t that list of qualities just Hermione in abstract form?

Of course, if she had been placed in Ravenclaw, well, she wouldn’t have become such good friends with Harry and Ron, and probably many things would have needed to be worked differently in the grand storyline. So I understand the practical reasons behind that sorting.

It just seems like a bit of a honking plot hole.

Day Five: the Louvre day, strategically chosen because the Louvre is open late on Wednesdays – they don’t kick you out until 9 PM, which means one doesn’t need to get there right when the doors open to have a nice long stretch to admire the collection. This is good for me, since I am not one who is skilled when it comes to early starts. I think I managed to get myself to the museum by 2 PM, and since I had the Paris Museum Pass, I could bypass the lines and pretty well waltz right in – well, after clearing security. I would have to pay extra to see the temporary exhibit, Les Portes du Ciel, which was all ancient Egyptian stuff, and I would have liked to, but I delayed buying the ticket in favour of checking out the permanent collection first, and ended up not having time for the additional exhibit. As it turned out, I didn’t have time for the entire permanent collection either!

I headed in with some priorities – I wanted to see the more popularly known items first, then move on to contemplate the others in the collection. In all honesty, I’ve never been someone who really appreciates fine art. I mean, I know that there are things I like, and things I don’t like, but I’ve had a tough time understanding how someone can sit in front of a painting for more than five seconds ‘appreciating’ it. One of my uncles likes to do this. He can sit and admire a single painting for what seems to me to be a ludicrously long time. Knowing this about myself, I figured six hours would be plenty of time for someone like me to cruise through the Louvre’s entire collection.

That being said, the first priority piece I found was the Venus de Milo. It wasn’t in its usual gallery, which was being renovated, and so it was placed in a sort of hallway. It was a large hallway – the Louvre was once a palace, so everything has grandeur to it – and it was all by itself, with a cluster of admirers around it. I looked at it, and read the little information blurb about it, and looked at it some more. I did the same thing when I found Victory, while following the signs to the Mona Lisa. There was a crowd around the Mona Lisa. Still, I managed to get as close as I could – they had a railing set up to prevent visitors from getting too close, probably for greater equity in picture taking and viewing, because the painting itself was inside a glass enclosure, so it’s not as though someone could accidentally get bumped into it and damage it. It’s not a particularly large painting, but I stayed and looked at it for a rather long while for me. I examined it for all the details I’ve heard about it – the offset of the background landscape on the two sides, the lack of eyebrows, the enigmatic smile.

Then, I backtracked a bit, remembering another Da Vinci work that calls the Louvre home – Madonna on the Rocks. I found it, and found myself a place near the front of the small crowd – actually it was a tour group – and contemplated it for some time. I actually really like this one. The Mona Lisa is nice, but Madonna on the Rocks I actually like. The people depicted seemed to have a glow to them – for all I know, it was simply good lighting, but I stared at this painting for several minutes, and I could have stayed longer, but there was still so much to see. After tracking back to the Mona Lisa room to take a peek at the security measures to see if the novel had been accurate – it was – I worked my way through a large chunk of the Louvre’s permanent collection of paintings. Not all of them, but a pretty substantial amount, I hope. Then suddenly, it was time for me to get some food, so I found a food court just off the main lobby area and had a decent vegetable sandwich, then worked my way through the Louvre’s permanent collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts before the museum closed. As I exited the museum, I saw the inverted crystal pyramid with the marble pyramid beneath it, and then outside I saw the two crystal pyramids that jut up in the former palace courtyard…

All in all, it was a pretty worthwhile day!!

Anyways, I’m still busy busy busy….

I remember one summer job I had a while ago, in an office as an admin assistant, that was usually moderately busy, at moments it would be extremely busy, but every once in a while it would just be dead.

I hated those afternoons. I felt so trapped – couldn’t leave, couldn’t do anything to pass the time. I enjoyed the job when I was moderately busy, I could handle it when it was very busy – but the downtime just felt like my brain was dribbling out of my ears.

One of those slow afternoons, I happened to catch my boss playing solitaire in her office. Maybe it would have been okay for me to do the same? Oh well – she ended up getting fired, so maybe it’s a good thing I didn’t do as she did!!

I can’t stand the thought of wearing socks two days in a row, not because I think my feet are disgustingly dirty, but because it’s just wrong. I don’t think a strategy of hoping I can pull through till sandal season is a wise way to go, because it’s only February, and this is Canada, which means that sandal season is at least two and a half months away. If we’re lucky, we might be able to go sock-free in April. More likely it won’t really hit till late May or early June. So I think I need to get me some more socks pretty soon. Good thing I’ve got a ton of sock yarn kicking around – I went on a bit of a sockaholic binge a couple of weeks ago.

And I remembered to feed myself!!!

I guess that’s about it so far. I suppose in the grand scheme of things, it’s not lots. But given that it’s the weekend, I think I’m ahead of the game here… Too bad the week starts tomorrow

They had an informal Hindu ceremony performed by the groom’s great-aunt before the legal ceremony, and there was much joking around during this bit. When the bride was brought out by her father, she and the groom reached out and touched hands briefly at the altar, and the great-aunt noticed this and pointed this out to the assembled audience with a big grin, saying, “You’re not allowed to touch each other yet.” The bride and groom had a few moments of awkward clumsiness as they started in taking the seven steps of the Hindu ceremony together. After the seven steps, they returned to the altar, and we all heard the groom ask his great-aunt, “Are we married yet?”

Unfortunately, something more upsetting went wrong on Saturday. Apparently, the caterers misjudged the size of the kitchens at the venue, and realized too late that they needed more space in order to prepare the required amount of food, and went back to their own facility to do so. This means that the hors d’oeuvres (samosas and tandoori chicken) were about half an hour late. But that wasn’t the worst of it. The dinner itself – an Indian buffet – was nearly two hours late. We were supposed to eat at 7 PM. I believe the food arrived at 8:45 PM.

Now, I’m a pretty easy going person – I didn’t get upset by the lateness of the food. That being said, I strongly suspect that others did – I saw the bride and groom’s bosses pacing about antsily, looking a bit tense, and the bride’s grandfather was pretty cranky looking. Of course, he’s used to having his dinner at 5 PM, and going to bed at about 9:30 PM, so this delay was really throwing off his rhythm. To his credit, he didn’t yell at anyone, or make a scene, or even get unfriendly. But he did not look impressed.

On the plus side, the wedding cake was good. I was lucky, and got a slice of a chocolate layer – apparently, there was a vanilla layer too that wasn’t as nice. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the icing was actually really good – sometimes you get weird gross icing on bakery cakes, but this one was great, all sweet and buttery. Later, I was surprised to discover that my cake was all gone, but some icing remained on my plate. I ate a little bit of it by itself, but left a good sized chunk. I guess I’m my father’s daughter after all – there is such a thing as too much icing.

Our party favours were little carved wooden elephants. Everybody got one. They’re cute, but I think I would have preferred a little chocolate.

Tonight is stir fry. I spent a few minutes looking through a coupon book today..it, clipping coupons for bonus airmiles and things like this, and making notes of what was on special so that I wouldn’t forget anything. So now, the broccoli and peppers have been all chopped up into bite size pieces, the rice cooker is working away on the rice. Just as the rice is finishing up, I’ll start in on cooking up the beef, and once that’s cooked, I’ll add in the veggies, and then shortly thereafter I’ll toss on the teriyaki sauce.

I hope this turns out well. ^_^ Because I am hungry! ^_^

I also bought corn on the cob, so that will need to be eaten soon. ^_^ Tomorrow, maybe chicken pot pie – the wonderful frozen ones from the Farmer’s Market – with more corn on the cob. ^_^ Beyond that remains unplanned. ^_^

Mmmmmm – I can smell the rice, and it smells nice. ^_^ I suppose this means I should be getting ready to start the stir fry! ^_^
