The answer is because I didn’t actually go to bed until close to 2 AM last night, and felt that three hours of sleep probably wouldn’t be the best rest up for a new day. The worst was either Wednesday or Thursday night of last week, don’t really remember which it was anymore. I woke up at around 2 AM, and I was not comfortable. I tossed and turned and couldn’t figure out what was bothering me so much. It wasn’t me being too hot or too cold – tossing off the blankets didn’t help, nor did heaping them back on. I rotated my pillow. I rolled around to a different portion of the mattress. Nothing helped.

After about ten minutes of this sort of bizarre, not painful but definitely unpleasant discomfort, I ended up sliding out of bed and onto the floor. Short-lived relief. I fell asleep, woke up ten minutes later with a crick in my neck, turned over gingerly, and slept for another ten minutes, at which point I woke up with a kink in my back, I turned carefully again, and slept another ten minutes. This sort of routine kept up for about an hour and a half, at which point I woke up feeling not just stiff but also cold, and I crawled back into bed, and slept the rest of the night.

I’m not sure what all this means, but there’s one possibility that I’m entertaining more than others – it may be time for me to get a new bed.

Really, though, that idea may have so much appeal because for the past two years or so, I’ve been somewhat enamoured with the idea of getting a fancy schmancy hotel bed. This may be me rationalizing such a splurge.

First, though, let’s see if the interrupted sleep pattern continues.

Quite some time ago, I took a class that was all about Greek mythology. There was a teensy bit of Roman mythology tossed in there for good measure, but it was predominantly about the Greek gods and their stories. Sadly, I do not remember as much as I would have hoped.

Against the flu, that is. Everyone is all hyper about H1N1, and the recommendation now is for every individual to get vaccinated against the seasonal flu, and then once the H1N1 vaccine becomes available in November, to get that shot too.

I don’t know what to do. I generally don’t like needles, but I understand the benefits of vaccination, so I do get myself vaccinated. I’ve never had a flu shot though – I’ve always relied on my immune system to get me through the season. There are so many flu viruses kicking around, and the flu shot is really an educated guess about which particular strain will be the flu of the season. I understand that it is a guess made by experts, with some evidence backing their selection, but it is still a guess, and I remember there was one year where they totally guessed wrong. My thinking has always been that if getting a flu shot does not offer me guaranteed protection, then I’m not parting with my hard earned money for it.

That being said, I’ve had a flu before, and boy howdy, it hit me hard. I remember being utterly unable to do anything except sleep. I came home from work – yup, I went to work when I was pretty sure I was sick, because it was a Saturday and finding someone to cover for me was the impossible dream, so I did my level best to not get too close to anyone while I was at work – fell face down into bed, and basically lost consciousness for something crazy like 18 hours. When I was awake, I certainly wasn’t alert, I was hardly even aware of anything. This state of being alive but not living stuck around for two whole days after I emerged from the flu coma. I think it took me a full week to get back to normal.

So perhaps you understand, I’m pretty motivated about not getting the flu again… Especially something like the swine flu….

Still, I’m on the fence about the flu shot. Indecision is terrible….

So. The shoes. I don’t need them. This much was very clear to me – I have several colder weather appropriate pairs already. So how much do I want them? Well. I like the idea of new shoes, and these ones were cute. They were also, however, rather similar to a pair I already own – the ones I have don’t have a kitten heel, they have a wedge heel. They are, however, Mary Jane style with a rounded toe. So unless I’m hitching up my pants legs with the explicit intent of showing off my shoes, the new ones are very very similar to a pair that I already own.

What else could I get for $99 instead of those shoes? Quite a bit, as it turns out. I could have 33 rounds of cinnamon melts and large Cokes at McDonalds’. I could get two pair of dress pants from Victoria’s Secret, on clearance, with shipping charges. I could get two of my gel nail manicures, with tax and tip – a month’s worth of nail grooming. I could have 10 food court lunches, with Coke.

Also? I know that shoe stores occasionally have massive clearance sales, the kind where people have to line up outside the store because only a certain number of shoppers are allowed inside at a time, and at these kinds of nutso sales it’s possible to get really nice shoes for $50.

The shoes went back on the shelf, and I walked out of the store empty-handed.

Now I just need to pay attention to sale notices. After all, I still want new shoes….

I’ll try one of the bigger, discounty type places first. If nothing there, then it’s time to go looking through the smaller shops looking for sale items. I’m hoping to get a new pair for $80 or less….

I suspect I am being overly optimistic about shoe pricing…
