Anyways, in the interest of expanding my cooking repertoire, I decided to try a new recipe tonight. For tonight, I decided to give Green Beans Guido a try.

Now, the recipe calls for one 10 oz. package of frozen green beans. I thought this was sort of curious. Certainly, it was a choice made on the basis of convenience – frozen beans can be bought well in advance, and are more likely to be just kicking around in the freezer ready for use at any time. Frozen beans are okay, but fresh green beans just taste so much better – they have that fresh crispness to them, but it’s not just texture, you can actually taste a difference. In the interest of giving this dish its best possible shot, I opted to swap out frozen for fresh.

I discovered, however, that there is more than just handiness to the choice of frozen over fresh here. First off, there’s far more prep work involved with fresh green beans. You have to wash them, which is a pain, especially when you’re being stubborn like me and refusing to use the colander to wash them because you don’t want to wash the colander later. Silly reason, but there it was. After they’re washed, then you need to cut them into bite size pieces, which has to be done with small collections of beans – you can’t grab a big handful and just hack away. It took me nearly 15 minutes just to get the beans ready for cooking!

In the end, the dish was quite tasty. I enjoyed it, I really savoured that fresh crispness in the beans. Next time, though, I’m going to have to give it a really hard think before I decide whether or not to take the frozen route…. Laziness will probably win!!!

I suppose I really do have a third option, which is to print out and read a paper that could potentially be of interest to me. Sigh.

I took the completed handout to Staples to get copies made. It’s a three page handout (six pages printed two up), so it required stapling. But, not the end of the world, I guess – it would be even more aggravating to have the staples at the bottom. The insane obsessive part of me wants to take all the staples out and restaple every single handout – there are 60 copies – but then that same part of me reminds itself that I don’t have my stapler handy, which would entail using other people’s staplers, which I am hesitant to do because staplers can sometimes be tricky beasts and staple funny. I know mine doesn’t, so whenever I need stapling done, I strongly prefer to use my own stapler.

Okay – I guess I should get back to pretending I’m smart and work on my second handout some more. What a great way to spend a Friday night!

I can’t believe that January is already gone. Where did it go?

Sadly, I didn’t find any to my liking – although there was one pen type that I would have bought, had they had them in black ink. After years and years of using rather non-conventional pen colours (‘antique’ shades of dark and light blue, deep forest green, and burgundy!) I thought it might be nice to switch to something more traditional. Or purple. The decision could go either way.

But the one pen type that I was sufficiently intrigued by was only available in blue. Not even fancy blue, like the antique light blue I’ve used previously. Just plain ol’ blue. I don’t want plain ol’ blue.

So no pens for me.
