Ever since I moved out of my parents’ place, I’ve been a laptop person. Now, while the integrated touch pad is a useful pointing device when one is in transit, which happens not infrequently in my life, when I’m parked at home I like to have a real mouse. For one thing, if I have some fiddly bit of work to do, attempting to use the touch pad will leave me in a froth of frustration, and my work takes way longer to get through. For another, many of the point-and-click timewaster games I enjoy simply don’t work well on the touch pad – it takes too long to navigate the cursor to your next click.

So I have a wireless mouse. I’ve had it since, oh, 2005? It’s been around these parts, working faithfully, for quite some time. It runs off AA batteries, so whenever those die out, all I have to do is pop in some new ones and we’re good to go again.

Except, for the past week, things seem different. When I click, it doesn’t seem to always register. There have been a couple of incidents where I clicked, and for some reason two clicks registered – both times I was just playing a little timewaster game, so nothing critical happened in the grand scheme of things. Still my mouse’s performance has been somewhat spotty.

I’m wondering if it’s time for me to replace this mouse… I do like new stuff….

A while back – in early to mid July – I bought some raffle tickets. The grand prize was a fully furnished new house. Who am I to deny myself the chance to win a house?

Now, I know the odds on these sorts of things are rather slim. I mean, you’ve got how many thousands of people buying multiple tickets? And there’s only one house to be given away? There’s just no way I would be lucky enough to win such an extravagant prize. That being said, it was one of those charity raffles, so at the time I told myself that, well, at the very least, I was donating money to a worthy cause.

Now, as I mentioned, even though I knew the odds were so very against me? The moment I dropped my little entry stubs in the box, I pictured myself winning the fantabulous prizes. Even though I hate moving with the burning heat of a thousand suns, I still pictured myself preparing my simple little meals in that gourmet kitchen, I fantasized about the massive ensuite bathroom, I imagined reclining on the comfy couch by the massive windows. I mentally inserted myself into that prize house, and got all cozy in there.

It’s now been just over a month, and I have yet to be contacted as the grand prize winner. I think that now it is safe to say that I did not win the house.

I happened upon my ticket stubs on the countertop today, realized that I needed to kiss all those lofty visions of myself goodbye, and unceremoniously threw them away.

And then consoled myself for my loss – because with all the daydreaming, it now truly felt like a loss, silly as that is – with a couple of my coveted Jelly Belly jelly beans.

I’ve considered purchasing a biometric lock for my front door off and on for a while now – the sort where you program the thing to recognize your fingerprint, so rather than carry around a key, all you need to do is scan your finger whenever you want to unlock the door. Very spiffy sounding.

The only hiccup is, I often have some trouble with fingerprint scanners. They seem to not like me much. I suspect the problem is that the pads of my fingers are sort of smooth, so that the grooves of my prints are rather shallow, which means that when one of these scanning devices goes to capture an image, it gets a rather smudgy grubby one, which makes recognizing that print again later a bit of a crap shoot. I’d hate to be trapped outside my home one day, trying endlessly to get the door to grant me entrance by repeatedly swiping my finger, only to be rudely denied time after time, sobbing in frustration while the neighbours edge past me, hoping to avoid being noticed.

Maybe carrying a key isn’t such a bad thing after all.

I always worry about losing my key somewhere, and that worry would simply go away if I got the biometric lock. Of course, I was sharing this possibility with my father one day, and he snorted and said, Sure, but then if a thief wants into your place, he doesn’t need to find a key, he just needs to chop off your finger!

I have a Facebook account, but don’t really use it for its intended purpose. I admit, I’ve jumped on the FarmVille bandwagon, and my Facebook account is primarily used so that I may tend to my virtual crops. I do keep in touch with a few people using Facebook, and I also play Treasure Isle, but FarmVille is the thing that really got me logging in on a regular basis.

Now, since my discovery of FarmVille, I haven’t done much temporary changing of geographical location. Until now.

I tried to log in this morning.

It told me that since I was attempting to log in from a different place, it wanted to run through some tests to confirm my identity. It warned me that the system would not allow me in if I got any of the questions wrong, and that if I was not sure, I should enter I don’t know as my answer, and that I would only be allowed to do that twice.

Nervously, I started the test. I’d never had to do this verification thing with Facebook before, and I wasn’t sure of what to expect – I had no memory of setting up any security questions, never mind what sorts of answers I had given upon doing so.

As it turned out, it was the spiffiest identification procedure I’ve ever been through. It presented me with two pictures, pulled from the online collections of one of my friends, outlined the relevant person where necessary, and then asked me to identify that person from a multiple choice list of possibilities. I had to identify seven friends in this manner. Very funky, no memorization of trivial bits of information necessary – like Did I list my high school’s full name, or the shortened version of it? Which, by the way, has caused me grief in the past. It also strikes me as a pretty good system, since a stranger would really not be able to fumble their way through the process – especially with the zero failure policy.

I wish banks and credit card companies could figure out a way to do this. I always get tripped up by questions like What was the amount of your last payment?

I checked the receipt taped to my takeout bag. Sure enough, the guy taking my order had entered in Diet Coke for my order, so it’s not the case that I just had the bad fortune of being handed someone else’s pop. I wonder why he thought I wanted Diet? The only part of what I said in placing the order that could remotely have been heard as Diet was I’d like a, but that was at the very beginning, which would have made my order Diet Cinnamon Melts and a large Coke, please, which makes absolutely no sense.

So there I sat, with a blurky large Diet Coke, and two options – drink it or pitch it. It only cost me a dollar, so it totally wasn’t worth getting back in the car and driving back there to complain and get the pop that I actually wanted. I settled on drinking it anyway. After all, I did spend an whole dollar on it, so I was going to drink my pop, darnitall!

As it turned out, this was a mistake. As I reached the two-thirds mark on the drink, I began to feel some uneasiness in my tummy. The uneasiness developed into an uncomfortably sore tummy that lasted for about an hour. It would seem that my body does not like aspartame, or one of the other interesting compounds they use to make a sweetened beverage that miraculously does not contain calories.

Now I know better. Avoid diet pop. Always. Full stop.

Clearly, I am on to something here, and should no longer think twice about jump starting myself with the good stuff.
