Anyways it’s the dawning of a new era!!!

So Thursday I had my consultation to determine my candidacy for refractive vision correction. I underwent a battery of tests, though most I usually get during a typical eye exam - apparently, I have a good optometrist. The results said that I was a candidate for many corrective options. They also told me that if I wanted, I could be scheduled in for my procedure on Friday morning.

So guess where I was on Friday morning?

That’s right - I took the plunge and booked myself in for Intralase LASIK the day after my consultation exam. It felt a bit like leaping without looking first, given the rather short lag between consultation and surgery. Thursday night I kept reminding myself that I had done enough research to put my doubts to rest a few months ago, long before I was able to get in for my consult. And that I had decided that this was something I really wanted even before then. So really, there was nothing to be gained from waiting a week or two, or a month even, before having my faulty eyes corrected.

Friday morning, I nervously ate a small bowl of oatmeal before heading down to the clinic. I checked in with the receptionist on the surgical side, signed some forms, was given a brief tutorial on the drops I’d be using after surgery, and was then whisked in to see the surgeon. I was nervous right up until my chat with the surgeon - she was fantastic, so calm and confident, she handily tossed all my fears out the window. I was then ushered back out front to sign another form, offered a mild sedative, which I accepted, and then sent over to the billing department to pay for my procedure. Then, back to the waiting room.

When it was my turn, I was laid out on a reclining bench of sorts, and shown the two lasers that would relieve me of my dependence on lenses. Then, the prepping began - numbing drops in my eyes, draping over the eye they were working on first, placement of a lid holder to keep my eye open no matter what, then application of the suction cup that would hold my now numb eyeball in place during flap creation. There was an odd sensation of pressure on my eyeball, and it caused vision to black out, leaving only afterimages of the lights surrounding the laser used to silently create the flap. Once the flap was made, the suction cup was removed and I was swiveled over to the excimer laser, which would be doing the actual refractive correction. I was actually able to see the flap as it was being lifted from the rest of my cornea - sort of surreal. The excimer laser made definite snappy sounds, and created a smell much like singed hair. Once the excimer laser was done its job, my eyeball was bathed in distilled water, encouraging the flap to return to its original position, and healing drops were placed in my eye. The lid holder and draping were removed, a protective plastic bubble was placed over my eye, and then the whole process was repeated for the other eye - they started with the left, and then did the right. When it was all done, I walked out into the waiting room and waited for my ride to come pick me up and take me home.

At home, I put in some of the special before-you-sleep artificial tear drops, and then zonked out for four or five hours - thanks in part to the mild sedative. The rest of the day passed foggily, with lots of drops dispersed as evenly as I could over my waking hours. More of the special nighttime drops before bed, and the plastic bubble shields were taped back into place over my eyes before sleep.

Saturday, I woke up with a dry feeling in my right eye. This did not please me. I dropped many drops in that eye throughout the day, even tried using the special nighttime drops in lieu of the thinner daytime drops to try to get rid of the dry feeling. It didn’t work. Even worse, my vision was hazy - I knew it wasn’t that the correction had been fouled up, because I could tell that I was able to focus on things, but the world was bathed in an annoying haze, much like a permanent soft focus effect. Moving objects closer to my face did not improve their clarity. I worried that this would be the way things would be for the rest of my life, and my mood was pretty sour throughout much of the day. I couldn’t even knit to get my mind off it, because I couldn’t see well enough to knit.

Today, though, things are much better. There’s still a slight haze to the world, but it’s totally livable should things not improve beyond this point - I can see well enough to read, drive, and knit. What more could I need? The dry feeling has left my right eye. The world seems brighter, clearer - even if it is still sort of in soft focus. Light sources are particularly hazy.

So far, no regrets. Woohoo! Now all I need is for these little red bruises from the suction cup to clear up so I no longer look like a bloodshot freak!!
