Two beaded bracelets, accompanied by a belated birthday card from a once very close but now sorta distant friend. The story of the slow erosion of this friendship can wait for another post. For now, suffice it to say that these arrived quite a while after my actual birthday, one or both of them may have been intended as gifts for last year’s birthday, and in spite of us living in the same city now, they came to be in my possession thanks to Canada Post.

These bracelets are, well, not really me. I don’t see myself ever wearing them. For one thing, I’m not a bracelet person. I vaguely like the concept of them, but in practice the things just never end up on my wrists. I wear a watch on my left wrist, in the hopes that I will go through my day with some concept of time. Other than that, my wrists are unadorned, and I don’t imagine that will ever change. For a second thing? The bracelets are too big. I don’t have to undo the clasps to get them on, they slide very easily over my hand without me doing that thing where you squish your thumb as nearly into your palm as you can. They probably wouldn’t just fall off due to gravity alone, but add movement to the mixture, and I’m one spastic armwave away from sending one of these flying off into space.

For a third thing? Note the colour scheme on the rightmost one. See how it’s all bluey? That makes it just about the only blue clothing/jewelry item I own. One of my watches has a pale silvery blue face, and I like it, but these beads are blue blue blue.

So, when all is said and done, realistically I’m not going to wear these.

I like the beads though. They’re just plastic, but they are pretty. And this has gotten me thinking – would it be terribly inappropriate for me to dismantle these unusable bracelets and use the beads to make myself a whole thwack of stitch markers for my knitting?

This is the question of the day. On the one hand, it seems wrong that she put such care into selecting the beads for me when I’m not going to do anything with them. On the other hand, it seems wrong for me to rip apart her handiwork and scavenge the remains for my own selfish purposes. Then again, the extent of her handiwork here is stringing sequences of beads onto a wire, then attaching the ends to a clasp. Part of me thinks that this requires less effort and care than, say, producing a handknit hat. Then another part of me will chime in that it doesn’t matter, a handmade something is a handmade something, perceived effort involved is irrelevant.

I suppose this means I really need to get on it now and send her the hat I made her for her birthday last year. See, it goes both ways – judge not lest ye be judged and all that wazoo….
