Okay guys, met-art has a new feature where you can ‘generate your own galleries’… I’m not really sure what the benefit of these are.. Anyways, the claim is that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This claim is generally accepted to be true. I believe that it is true.

Do I eat breakfast? Nope. Haven’t really had breakfast since early high school, I think.

A related claim is that if one skips breakfast, this has the effect of slowing one’s metabolic rate, so more of the calories consumed are stored as fat reserves. Again, this claim is generally accepted to be true. I believe that it is true.

Yet I would not consider myself to be fat. Admittedly, I am not what I would call the picture of physical fitness - I don’t exercise anywhere near as much as I should, my physical activity is pretty well restricted to walking around a wee bit and climbing two flights of stairs two or three times a day at work. Yet I think my dress size is respectable, and my doctor doesn’t deliver ominous lectures at my yearly checkups.

In spite of my abysmal dietary lifestyle, I do not bear an uncanny resemblance to a water-logged hippo.

This is not to say that my eating habits are consequence free. This morning, I was standing in a co-worker’s office, having a little chat with her. She was telling me about some upcoming day surgery she’ll be undergoing later this week. Now, I am squeamish, but usually it’s the sight of real blood - movie blood doesn’t get me - and it just makes my skin crawl. And she wasn’t even getting into gory details or anything. But as she was talking, I started to feel funny. It started out as feeling a bit off balance. Then I started to feel sort of hollow inside. Then I felt as though I could hear myself blink - a little tink, tink kind of sound, I imagined. Then the lights started to seem extra bright, and my co-worker’s voice started to sound farther away.

And I thought to myself, I think I’m going to faint.

I wondered if I was changing colours as she continued with her tale. I wondered if there was anything I could do to avoid collapsing away in a dead faint in her office. I’ve never done the dead faint thing before, but I’ve come closer than I’d like in the past - once I almost keeled over in the shower, had to stop the water and lie down on the bathroom floor until the bright lights and shortness of breath went away, another time I nearly zonked out on an elliptical machine while working out, and sort of sheepishly slunk off to a corner where I sat and tried to be as inconspicuous as possible while waiting for my consciousness to stabilize. Sadly, what I was experiencing was therefore familiar to me.

I decided I had better sit down. It seemed like her story wasn’t going to be done for a while, and I figured staying upright would be bad. No, I didn’t just plunk down on the floor, I went for a chair. I wonder if she thought her story was making me queasy. I really don’t think that was it. I think it was just that my blood sugar was a bit low because it was after 11 AM and I’d been up since 8 AM and hadn’t eaten anything since dinner the night before.

My head readjusted itself, she finished her story, I wished her good luck with her surgery, returned to my office and dug into the box of granola bars I keep in my cubby to try to boost my blood sugar levels. I felt fine the rest of the day.

So you must imagine that after a little scare like that, I would have taken the time and care to have lunch at a normal lunch hour time, right?

Well, you’d imagine wrong. I didn’t eat my lunch until 3:30 PM….
