Today was my day in Acapulco! It smells a little fishy everywhere……….

The weather was gloriously sunny and warm and humid - very unlike Canadian wintertime. ^_^ We arrived in Acapulco at around noon, and at 12:30 I was on a boat headed towards my snorkeling excursion. Now, I’m not exactly what one would call a strong swimmer, but I’ve discovered that when you’re on a snorkeling excursion, you can wear a lifejacket while you snorkel! So I do that, and I get to enjoy paddling with the fishies while feeling secure and safe from the threat of drowning.

The snorkeling excursion was great! A little boat ride out to a sheltered little bay off an island, where I got equipped up and then paddled around in the water for probably about an hour. Now, the water wasn’t as wonderfully warm as it was on my last excursion, but that was paddling around in cenotes on the Caribbean side of Mexico. This was paddling around in the Pacific. Still, I saw nifty marine life - I saw blue fish with bright blue spots, and dark blue fish with a bright blue outline around their fins and bodies, and schools of fish with yellow, black, and white stripes, and gray fish with yellow tails. I also saw a few skates, I think, doing their thing along the bottom in the shallower bits where I could see the bottom, and I also saw sea urchins! One of the guides saw a moray eel, but that was deeper down, so I wouldn’t have been able to see it, which is fine - I think seeing the eel might have spooked me out of the water prematurely. They have nasty teeth - I’ve seen pictures.

Also, on the little journey to and from the snorkeling spot, our group saw manta rays jumping out of the water! I didn’t know they did that, and I’m not sure what they were trying to achieve by doing that. Feeding, I suppose? We also saw some vultures circling - a bit unsettling - and several pelicans.

I’ve heard that a trip to Acapulco isn’t complete without seeing the cliff divers show, so I took that in as well, at La Quebrada. Speaking as a person who sometimes gets skittish on elevators, I cannot fathom how a person can willingly jump off a cliff into a pool of water. O.o Before you make fun of me, I did manage to survive both Splash Mountain and the Rock’N'Roller Coaster in Disney World, so I can’t be that wimpy. ^_^

Acapulco is nice - I wish I had another day here - but tomorrow, we head north to Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa. More snorkeling for me! ^_^
