I enjoy driving, and I like to think I take a pretty zen approach to it – if there are idiots on the road, I just stay away from them, and I try to avoid dwelling on any irritating behaviour I see out there. I accept that sometimes, bad things happen, and traffic can become congested and sluggish as a consequence, and there’s really nothing I nor anyone else on the road with me can do about it. If people need to move into my lane and they are mostly in front of me with their signal light on, I will let off the accelerator to allow them sufficient room to make their move. I wave in thanks when other drivers offer me the same courtesy of making a gap for me.

Some behaviour, however, is too annoying, and the annoyance stays with me for a while. I’ve found that cyclists are guilty of inflicting prolonged annoyance on me. I have no problem with sharing the road with cyclists, but in my mind, if you’re on the road, that means you have to follow the rules of the road. That means that you don’t drive between lanes of traffic stopped at a light. That means that you have to pay attention to the vehicles around you, and make sure you’re not cutting someone off. That means you do not sail through red lights! Yes, I know it’s cold outside, and you want to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. But really, if you start doing unsafe things for the sake of hurrying so that you spend less time exposed on your bike, then maybe you shouldn’t be out riding the bike!!!
