Anyway,s I was woken up this morning by a phone ringing, and the words: “Would you like to take a survey?”

As long as it’s not about beans or George Wendt. ^_^

Years ago, I spent my summer working part time for a marketing firm as a telephone interviewer. I would go in to work, sit in a cubicle with a stack of questionnaires and a headset telephone. Each questionnaire had a label attached to the top of it with a name, address, and telephone number. I would dial the number and proceed to administer the questionnaire, provided the person on the other end was willing. I had to record all the answers in pencil on the questionnaires themselves – multiple choice questions were fine, but the short answer questions were rough because I was supposed to write down what the respondent said verbatim. X_x

Perhaps because of that experience, I usually take the time to participate in little phone surveys that come my way. Well, okay, not the automated ones. But the ones where there’s a real live person on the other end, I’ll listen to the spiel, and if I qualify I’ll participate. If I’m not in the target demographic, I’ll tell them nicely. I usually don’t qualify. When I do, it’s usually quick enough – I did one this morning, and it took less than five minutes. ^_^

I don’t have the same patience for telemarketers though, even though I did that one summer too, and hated it to boot. Mostly because telemarketers are trained to be incredibly pushy. They give you their little spiel about whatever it is that they’re selling, and I listen politely and say no thank you. Then they ask me why I don’t want it. I give them a reason, and they try to rebut it. I realize that this is what they are told to do, but what inevitably ends up happening is that I have to give some rude and completely final response to make them stop. And then I feel crummy because it’s not the telemarketer’s fault, really – they’re not horrible people, they’re just people with horrible jobs….. Usually…

That being said, I’d rather get called by telemarketers than fax machines. Fax machine calls are the worst. All you get are loud annoying beeps on the other end, and usually when you’ve been called once, you can expect two more attempts because a lot of machines will make three attempts. And since you don’t know where the fax is coming from, you can’t call anyone to tell them that your phone is not a fax, and they’ve made a mistake. Bleh…
