Anyways, this is definitely the age of automation….

A short while ago, I noticed while going through the drive thru at the McDonald’s closest to my house that they have a nifty new bit of gadgetry behind the counters. I think it only benefits the employee on drive thru duty, but here’s how it works. You drive up to the speaker and place your order. The employee punches it into the computer and instructs you to drive forward. Once the order is entered, the drink portion of the order is routed through to a spiffy drink dispensing machine – it selects the appropriate sized cup, moves it to an appropriate spot, and dispenses the appropriate amount of both ice and the appropriate beverage.

Now, I’m pretty sure they’ve had pre-measured drink dispensing for a while now – I’ve watched employees place the cup under the spout and press a button with an image of a cup on it, and I’ve seen that there are three buttons with different cup sizes on them. With this gizmo, the employee is saved the task of picking the correct cup, putting in the right amount of ice, and then placing it under the appropriate spout and pressing the relevant button. Which in turn gives the employee a few extra seconds here and there which he or she can put towards food fetching, bag stuffing, order entering, and cash handling.

These kinds of automated thingums are fascinating to watch the first few times. This one kept me entertained while I waited for my food at the window – I requested extra pickles, so that means it took a few extra seconds. (No, I’m not pregnant!!) The machine was so efficient, it seemed beautiful. Then, a few rounds later, I started seeing that efficiency in a terrifying one-step-closer-to-robots-taking-over-the-planet sort of light.

Or maybe that’s just a bit of paranoia piping up.

I still enjoyed my McFood….
