When I was growing up, my family lived in a bungalow. Consequently, as a kid I thought two-storey houses were the best sorts of houses a person could find. This was in part due to the way these types of houses were portrayed on TV. You see, I spent my childhood believing that every two-storey house had two staircases connecting the second and main floors. I think this notion came from one of the TV shows I used to watch. There was the one set of stairs that led down to the main room, with the railing and banister, and there was another set at the back of the kitchen. This struck me as just too too convenient. You want to go to the kitchen for breakfast? Take one staircase. You want to go straight down to the living room? Take the other one. Other TV houses also had this two staircase system – and I, being young and naive, felt TV would never lead me astray. The fact that my maternal grandparents lived in a two-storey house that only had one set of stairs did nothing to rattle my perception of the world – I figured theirs was too abnormally small to support two sets of stairs.
I have since learned the error of my ways – most houses only have one set of stairs. Which is too bad, because I still think having two is a neat idea. I realize, though, that staircases in the real world take up space that most houses don’t have to spare.

Never lived in a house with stairs. Always associated them with strange noises and haunted houses. My next house will have them though, so I won’t take up a lot of yard space.
