Okay – it’s been a while since i’ve posted anything from Katesplayground, so I figured it’s time again!! This one includes a nice asian girl for you asian fetishists!!
Anyways, when I was a kid, I was a fussy eater. My mother gets a kick out of telling people that I used to insist that my spaghetti be served with the sauce separate from the pasta. I have no recollection of this, but I have nothing with which to defend myself. I do remember not liking my food to touch – so my meat would occupy one section of my plate, my mashed potatoes would occupy another, and vegetables would occupy the remainder of the plate’s surface. Gravy drove me nuts because I couldn’t control where it went on the plate unless it was exceptionally thick, in which case it behaved more like a solid than a liquid. Stir fry was okay though – I don’t really have an explanation for that one. O_o I also remember thinking it would be fantastic if my family got a set of those partitioned plates, like the ones you see on TV being used in the military, or in prisons, with the little walls dividing the plate into sections, so nothing would run together. I suppose it’s not much of a stretch to imagine I would have wanted my pasta separate from its sauce.
This fussiness in presentation also spilled over into fussiness over what precisely was being served. I was very wary of unidentifiable dishes – I sort of needed to know that I liked what I was about to eat in order to eat it happily. This also made me wary of new dishes containing things I had never tasted before. Crucially, though, I outgrew this, and am now happy to explore new culinary zones. For example, I recently tried Persian cuisine for the first time, and I selected a dish called fessenjoon, which is a traditional stew served over saffron basmati rice. I picked the ground beef variant, which means I got four large meatballs in my stew, with the saucy part made notably of ground walnut and pomegranate. Now, I generally don’t like walnuts – I find them too bitter for my taste – but I love stewed things, and figured that the stewing process would probably take a fair amount of the walnuts’ bitterness away, so I risked it. Boy am I glad I took that chance! ^_^ It was amazing. Absolutely amazing. ^_^
Some things don’t change, though, and my general dislike of gravy is one of them. I think the main problem I have with it is psychological – I like to see what I’m about to eat, and gravy effectively masks your food from proper visual inspection. I’ll make an exception for poutine sauce, though. ^_^
What’s also funny, is the last time I wrote about exploring other cuisines, notably Ethiopian, I started receiving search hits for Ethiopian porn!! I wonder if I’m going to get any for Persian Porn now!! ^_^

I share your wariness of gravy. When the meat was overcooked on the school lunch the would use gravy to hide it and soften the meat up, usually chicken fried steaks. I don’t care if my food touches. Mashed potatoes are very effective at picking up small vegetables if there’s no gravy on the potatoes. Many foreign dishes turn my stomach, weird spices I think. And lately what ever people are using to make a dish “southwest”.
