So my post title may have you wondering what I had for breakfast today. No, it wasn’t leftover turkey – I managed to escape without a care package of leftover turkey. Didn’t get away without an ice cream pail full of dried shiitake mushrooms though. Oh well.
Turkey dinner was on Saturday night. Sunday, some relatives came over here for steak – obviously we’re not traditional ^_^. What goes well with barbecued steak? Mushrooms. I was a bit ambitious, though, in buying 20 mushrooms for 5 people. I sliced them all up, then realized that they wouldn’t quite fit in the fry pan. So I ended up with about four mushrooms’ worth of slices set aside for a second batch should the need arise. It didn’t. So they got covered with plastic wrap – a big no no! – and put in the fridge. I had already discarded the paper bag they came home from the grocery store in, and besides, I’d washed them, so I wouldn’t have wanted to pop them back in that bag anyhow. Otherwise, the golden rule is never store mushrooms in plastic.
So this morning, I hauled them out of the fridge, and cooked them up for my brekkie. ^_^ I’ve also had a peach, and now I’m drinking some chocolate milk…
Mushrooms are a tasty side dish and oh so easy to cook. ^_^ All you do is wash them, then slice them up. Put an appropriately sized fry pan on the stove over mediumish heat, and melt a decent sized dollop of butter in the pan – the bottom should be pretty thorougly coated with melted butter. Let the butter heat up until it starts making a bit of a sizzling noise – just a tiny bit, with a few tiny bubbles appearing – and then pop in the mushroom slices. You can largely let it sit, and only move things around occasionally, flipping slices as much as you can. As they cook, they’ll shrink down and release water. Let the water boil off as the mushrooms simmer away. Once the water has boiled off, you can add seasoning salt. Give a few stirs, and they’re done! ^_^
Another easy peasy side dish is baked tomato. All you do is wash your tomato, slice it in half, top it off with grated parmesan cheese, and pop it in the oven (in an oven safe dish!) at 350 F for at least 10 minutes. I don’t time it – but I know it’s ready to come out when it starts to smell nice. ^_^
