Anyways, today I remembered how it’s all connected…… I’m not sure how old I was when I first noticed my tear ducts. Probably when I was quite young – I do remember poking about at the corners of my eyes when I was six or seven, looking for things. I never thought about where tear ducts lead to, though, until this was pointed out to me when I was fourteen or fifteen. I was at the optometrist’s office, getting my eyes checked out, and by then I was a contact lens wearer, which meant that a routine eye exam now included a corneal exam as well, in which the optometrist would drop some saline solution with special yellow tint in it onto the surface of my eye, and then shine a blue light on it to examine the surface of the cornea. I’d had it done a couple of times before that particular appointment, but I remember afterwards, the assistant was getting something for me, solution or a lens case or something, and he noticed I was still holding on to the kleenex the optometrist had handed to me when he dropped in the dye, because some always dribbles out so he wanted me to be able to mop myself up. The assistant could tell what the kleenex had been for because there were little yellowy stains on it from the dye, and he said, “Ah, you had a corneal exam today? So you’ll have yellow coming out your nose for a while then.” I gave him a puzzled look, and he explained, “Your tear ducts drain into your sinus cavities, so the dye from the corneal exam gets into the mucus in your nose.”

Now, I don’t often think about how the various tubes of my body are connected. I have been thinking about it more lately, though, because a last week, I was coping with some nasal congestion due to a minor cold, and when I would blow my nose, and I’m certain I could feel a breeze cross my eyeball. O.o That brought me immediately back to this memory of the connected tubes, and I thought, Cool, I just blew air out my tear duct by blocking off my nose! Shortly after that I thought, Nah, that’s just silly, it was probably just air blown out my nose deflecting upward. I’ve been sort of recreating the experience on and off since then, and I go back and forth on whether I think it is air coming out the tear duct, or just nose air deflected upward. It seems like there should be some sort of one-way valve in that passageway to prevent stuff in the nose from coming out your eyes more generally!!!
