I should know by now that it’s not a good sign when I nonchalantly figure that something I need to do will be straightforward, simple, and quick.

Last year, when the time for RRSP contributions came, I did everything online. It was easy. Painless. A few clicks, a handful of keystrokes, and I was done for another tax year. This process is what I remembered for this year, and what I was sort of counting on for today.

Before dinner this evening, I log in to my online banking, click in all the right places, then am about to perform the final click when I notice something. It’s trying to draw the funds for my contribution from an account that no longer exists. I closed the account last summer, when I switched to a new one… Yet closing the account apparently did not remove its status as my ‘default account’ for this type of transaction.

Okay, no problem – there must be a way I can update this online, right? I look more closely. It’s telling me I need to call a 1-800 number to fix this.

Right. Call a bank’s 1-800 number and try to talk to a real live person on the last day when RRSP contributions for the 2008 tax year can be made.

I try. I am put on hold. While on hold, I put the phone on speaker phone and work on fixing up my dinner. After being on hold for 40 minutes, my phone battery dies without warning and I, being somewhat distracted, don’t notice until it’s been dead for a while. I snatch at another handset, but it’s too late – dial tone.

I redial. I am put on hold again. I eat my dinner. I’m still on hold. I have some ice cream for dessert. I’m still on hold.

Over an hour after the second dialing, I get through to a person, and it takes about 20 minutes to get everything sorted out – change in default account, RRSP contribution made – because she has to go through all these silly scripts to ensure that I am making an informed investment. I was basically doing more of what I’d already done – you’d think they’d let me skip the scripts and questionnaire.

But it’s done. And next year, everything will be good to go for me to do it all on my own online. Because, you know, I’m not going to get to it any earlier next year. That would just make too much sense. That would make things too simple. That would require some other catastrophe, like my roof falling on my head as I try to perform that final click….
