Anyways, speaking of Summer and light, fog is confused clouds. Instead of being up high in the sky where they belong, the clouds are down low close to the ground, fouling up visibility for those of us bound by gravity to the surface of the planet.
I remember in my younger days always being excited when I heard my father say in the morning that it was foggy outside – I had visions of this super thick mist filling the air, making it impossible to see anything that wasn’t right in front of you. Of course, I was always sorely disappointed. Sure, I couldn’t see down the street to the corner perhaps, but I could still see my friend walking about twenty paces ahead of me. I’d scuff my shoes along the ground in bad temper, feeling cheated by the unimpressive fog, and wondering what the grownups were getting all in a tizzy about. After all, I could see.
The thing is, while I may have been able to see more than I had hoped in that fog, the amount of distance a person needs to be able to see in front of them varies with the speed at which they travel. A child walking along a quiet city street? Ten feet of visibility is fine. A person driving a vehicle at freeway speeds? Suddenly only being able to see ten feet ahead of you is downright deadly. While I like to believe that I am not easily spooked off of driving, reduced visibility conditions quite reliably make me tense up behind the wheel.
A few years ago now, I was making one of my day trip journeys to Plattsburgh, NY, and coming along for the trip was a friend who had not previously been in a car with me. Just my luck, there were whiteout conditions on the highway due to blowing snow that day. Seriously. Walls of white would whip across the road, and you absolutely could not see anything in front of you. That drive was the longest drive to Plattsburgh ever, because we were just crawling along – anything faster than 40 or 50 km/h felt wildly out of control, because we could not see ahead. We made it there and back without incident though – actually, the conditions improved significantly for the trip back.
I’ll never forget the fear I felt, though, watching the road just vanish from in front of me. And I think I’ll feel that same kick of adrenaline with a tinge of despair every time I drive when visibility is poor.

Didn’t work and I was disappointed. I could see it why couldn’t I catch it. I don’t know what’s worse highways and the speed or 2 lane roads with no place to go but off the road and cars appearing out of the fog. Have you noticed how quiet it gets in the fog. Is that real or imagined?
