Anyways, I guess I’m a bit squeamish….
I’ve always told myself that the reason I’ve never seriously considered pursuing a career in medicine is the fact that I can’t stand the sight of blood. It doesn’t make me faint or get nauseous or anything, and movie blood doesn’t have the same effect – I’m not saying I enjoy gore and violence in movies, but they don’t have a strong dissuading effect. I don’t like real blood, though. The thought of someone bleeding gives me the heebie jeebies, and seeing the little spots on the floor where someone has bled a little bit makes the world go a wee bit black around the edges, and quite possibly causes me to whimper a bit.
Now, when I have to get bloodwork done for tests, I can watch the whole process – as a teenager, I couldn’t stand to look, but now I’m better about it, and even watch with some sort of detached interest. Like I haven’t fully processed that it’s my blood going into the vial, directly from a vein in my arm, but rather a foreign substance that is magically appearing there. I’d been starting to think that maybe I was growing to be okay with blood.
Then someone very recently asked me for a bandaid for a brand new cut, and I just wanted to turn and run in the other direction. For the record, I didn’t, nor did I even whimper – I fetched the bandaid, and even had the presence of mind to ask what sort of size bandaid would be required.
So yes. I am not the person you want to depend on for first aid.

Blood = Pain in my mind. I can deal with mine because I want it stopped. Never had blood work done, I probably should.

You know, in medical school, we had a few people who were super squeamish. One fainted in the middle of lecture when they were showing a video. But he got over it and became an anesthesiologist. So I wouldn’t doubt that you’d get over it after awhile.
