As you might imagine, my culinary confidence took a bit of a hit this week, what with me melting down my rice cooker. I’m not afraid to step foot in my kitchen, but if I am using appliances, I am second guessing myself a lot.
If a person is lucky, though, life will find a way to restore balance when you get thrown for a loop. As it turns out, I am not without luck.
Some friends came by my place – stopping in to say hello, have a little visit, and also borrow some movies. See, I know someone who is pretty much a professional bargain hunter when it comes to electronics and entertainment. This means that I am frequently in a position to reap the benefits of any deals that appear on the horizon, and as a result, have a somewhat large collection of movies. Given that I cannot watch movies all day everyday, if a friend wants to borrow a movie or two, I am not inclined to refuse.
In any event, while chatting, the subject of Christmas baking came up, and homemade cookies, and I remembered that I had some on hand, and I should be a good hostess and share. So the cookie jar was presented, and each person took a cookie.
The cookies were very well received. When I first opened the jar, one friend peered in at the cookies, and said, “Oh, wow! Those look gourmet! You seriously made these?” Then she took a bite and her eyes got all big and she said, “These are the best cookies I have ever had!”
Now, I can’t claim to have invented the recipe or anything, but still. It felt good to hear a steady flow of positive things being said about something I made. I guess I can’t be a complete idiot in the kitchen.
That being said, there is now only one cookie left from the big batch. No, my friends weren’t gluttons – rather, I’ve been the glutton over the past couple of weeks, and besides, homemade cookies don’t keep forever, so it’s just as well that they’re pretty much all gone at this point. On to the next round of cookiedom!
