If you ever decide you truly want to change your hair, find yourself a new stylist.
Remember how I wanted a change last summer? I went to my wonderful usual stylist, and she gave me a big chop, but the haircut was really largely the same one that she always gives me… just a little bit shorter. Last Friday, I went to a new stylist at a new salon, lured in by a great promotional offer. I wasn’t looking for a big change, but knew my hair was in need of some grooming, and figured I might as well place myself fully in her capable hands, which would allow me to really evaluate her skills. I only requested that I be able to put my hair in a ponytail – bits falling out at the front are fine, but I need the ponytail option.
She pawed at my hair a bit after having washed it, and said, “Good grief, your hair is so thick! I’m definitely going to thin this out for you with layers; right now you don’t have any.” Which wasn’t entirely true – my old stylist had put in layers, but they were quite subtle at the time, and had since grown out.
She then started to cut – and boy howdy did she cut! Now there’s no question that I have layers in my hair – and my hair is much less ploufy than before. When I put it in a ponytail, somehow the diameter of the tail seems about half of what it used to be. She left my bangs longish, and put in some brown highlights above my forehead (included in the promotional offer).
Now, shaking my head feels totally different. Not just less weight from less hair, but the way my hair moves is different. It’s surreal. Now that there’s that much less weight, my hair is really starting to behave curly. Not ringlet curly, but most definitely not wavy either. I’m still working on figuring out how to make it look decent on my own though. ^_^
It IS a bit fobbish, and I won’t be getting brown highlights ever again, but it was definitely a good time for a change!
