Anyways, recently, I got an application form for a new credit card in the mail from a bank that hasn’t sent me offers for credit cards before. I opened it to see what the offer was.

It’s a Visa card that offers not just a low introductory interest rate for 6 months (2.9%) but an ongoing lower-than-normal interest rate (11.25%). This piqued my interest, as my other credit cards have interest rates that approach the 20% mark, and in my mind shuffling debts around so that they accrue as little interest as possible is a good thing. I suppose living one’s life debt-free would be an even better thing, but I’ve come to the conclusion that that is ultimately an impossible pipe dream unless you are independently wildly wealthy. I am not, so I make the most out of whatever credit banks are willing to extend in my direction.

The other thing that caught my attention about this card is that cardholders automatically contribute to a charity fund that supports organizations like Doctors Without Borders and Amnesty International. Well, I suppose the cardholders aren’t directly contributing – the bank chips 10 cents per transaction into the fund on the cardholder’s behalf. The idea of indirectly contributing to organizations that are essentially working to help balance the world out holds appeal to me – remember, I like it when things are fair.

So I set the application form aside to fill in and submit. Then, yesterday, I had a sudden thought that had not previously occurred to me, and reread the letter, then turned it over and read the fine print on the back. And I saw it.

Cardholders are charged a non-refundable annual fee of $25 for this card.

Suddenly this card is looking way less appealing. I can’t wrap my mind around the idea of paying for the privilege of holding a particular credit card. None of my other cards charge an annual fee. I realize that I would be saving much more than $25 a year in interest fees if I were to get it anyway. In fact, I may end up applying for the card in the end. But I won’t be totally thrilled about it. To my mind, it’s just wrong for them to charge you for the privilege of being able to charge you interest. Yes, I realize that I’m actually paying for the privilege of borrowing money from them, but they’re absolutely going to get it back – they know this because they will do a credit check on me before actually giving me the card, and they will see that I do not default.

More think time is required before a decision can be reached….
