Anyways, seriously. They - you know, parents, teachers, etc. - weren’t kidding when they said you learn something everyday. To be honest, even though I rolled my eyes at my father when he would say that when I was a child, I really do enjoy learning things. Well, as long as part of the learning process doesn’t involve me looking foolish for my misconceptions.

I had my in depth eye exam today to determine my candidacy for vision correction. I learned several things through the course of this exam.

1) I have astigmatism in my left eye. I did not know this. It is very, very mild astigmatism, so the optician wasn’t surprised when I told her my optometrist never bothered to tell me about it. Really, it’s so mild that it doesn’t interfere with my contact lenses - I don’t wear toric lenses, just the regular single vision ones. My right eye is astigmatism-free.

2) Even though he never informed me of my astigmatic left eye, my optometrist did include the smallest possible correction (a quarter of a diopter) in the left lens of my most recent pair of glasses.

3) Apparently, I have excellent depth perception - I was able to detect all the sticking-out circles in the depth perception test. With the number of things I walk into and/or miss by a long shot, this surprised me!!!

4) The drops they use to numb your eyes make it feel like your eyelashes are sticking together. Your eyelids feel all draggy and weird.

5) It’s not very encouraging when the guy instilling drops in your eyes is balancing on one leg as he stands above you because he is in crutches. This is not surprising, but still something I experienced for the first time today.

6) In addition to the blow-a-puff-of-air-at-your-eyeball glaucoma test, there is also a test where they actually touch a device to your eyeball to measure the pressure. I had the second type performed today - hence the numbing drops, I suppose. I didn’t feel a thing.

7) Having your eyes dilated does not mean that the world becomes an intolerable ball of fiery light. For the most part, it just seems to mean that focusing is tricky. I found that I had a really hard time focusing on objects to be able to read or knit with my glasses on, but if I took them off, it was fine. Also, my eyes look really bizarre all dilated. Think of Mr. Burns with his drops in. Like that. Except I don’t have a healthy radioactive glow.

Apparently, my pupils are a tad on the large side. Considering the size of my head, this shouldn’t surprise me… I think I have a pretty large head!!

Anyways, I think I’ve hit all the high points of learning from my afternoon…. Now it’s time for me to head to bed!!!
