After spending four days in the warm humidity of Toronto, I am back home – my plane landed at 11 PM local time.
The good: it felt like summer! Real summer! Not that we haven’t had that yet here or anything, but the day I left it was cold and rainy. It was nice to enjoy some sunshine and heat. And I had a lot of fun bopping around. I saw some friends that I hadn’t seen in a while, and we got to catch up a bit. The University has a fantastic fast food Indian place that gave me super wonderful lamb curry – it was so good, I had to go back and have it a second time. ^_^ There were two nights with receptions that had pretty nice free food.
Oh, yes, and lots of good interesting talks. 
The bad: one night, at 4 AM, the hotel’s fire alarm system went off – not a full out alarm, but the intermittent one which is supposed to signal that the hotel staff will be telling you what to do shortly. The guy at the front desk fumbled about with the PA system for a long time, and it wound up being a false alarm. I stayed in my bed the whole time. ^_^ The water pressure in the shower was weak.
Oh, yes, and I gave a talk. It was nothing spectacular. I nervously sped through it to finish five minutes early (!!), and the reaction was much the same as another similar talk I gave to a similar audience in February – they were generally unconvinced that my analysis needed to be the way it was. It wasn’t terrible – no one had a better alternate suggestion or some sort of counterexample, so no one could tell me that I was flat out wrong – but they were unconvinced. I’ve thought about this a bit, and realized that in order for my story to be really convincing, you really do need the whole story – and not bits and pieces, which is what I had to do for both talks because the whole story doesn’t fit into a twenty minute talk, not even with me channeling a chipmunk on speed in my presentation style.

Not sure about Christina Ricci, but if you look at that first picture, I’m leaning towards a cross between Rachel Hunter and Gomez from the Addams Family.
I hate speaking in front of large groups too, Kaori, and had a lot of trouble with it. A friend of mine who was a great speaker told me that when he’s up in front of a large group of people, he imagines that the whole audience is naked. I tried it once, but it didn’t help, so the next night, I went ahead and asked the audience to get naked for me. They did, and I gave the best speech of my life. Try it next time.
Ahhh yes… Two D’s in Addams Family…
