I had to get some blood samples taken for some medical tests today.

When I was seven, I was hospitalized with pneumonia. During my stay the took blood samples from me more than once, and I remember idly watching them fill the little vials. Later, as I approached my teenage years, I stopped being able to watch the extraction process – seeing that honking huge needle coming at my poor, tender, exposed vein would freak me out tremendously, so I’d have to look away.

More recently, I’ve started watching again – largely because I feel like as an adult I should be able to watch this procedure without having a panic attack. Not that I would make a scene in my younger years, but there was a definite adrenaline kick when the doctor told me he wanted me to get some blood work done. I still gives me a bit of anxiety, but it’s less of an adrenaline kick and more of an adrenaline nudge.

One interesting – okay, maybe not interesting, but the word neat seems inappropriate – thing I’ve noticed the past two times I’ve had to get blood work done is that when the vial is placed on the end of that special needle, and the valve is opened and the blood sample is collected, the vial your blood goes into steams up a bit. I also wonder if the vials are warm to the touch once they’ve been filled – I suppose they must be, since blood that was just inside you would be much warmer than anything outside. One of these days I’m going to ask the nurse if I can hold one of the vials of my blood, and she’ll think I’m nuts. Especially if she lets me and I sit there in the chair, with the vial in my hand, just grinning……
