Anyways… Donut or doughnut?

I really like donuts.

I’m a bit unsure about the spelling conventions though – I’ve always seen the word written as donut in donut shops, like Tim Horton’s, yet I’ve read the alternate doughnut in some texts. As are long johns – the long, rectangular donuts with the layer of frosting on top, sometimes with sprinkles.

That’s not to say that I don’t like the fancier varieties – the powdered jelly donuts, the fritters, the various cream-filled varieties, the chocolate cake ones. They’re all good, but if I’m not in the right mood, I won’t want to eat them. The same is not true of the simpler ones – they’re always good.

I still think the very best donuts are the plain original glazed Krispy Kreme donuts, still warm, right out of their donut making machine. You can get pretty close by microwaving the donuts later, but fresh off the line is extra special.

I’ve been thinking off and on about trying yoga for a while now. Then again, I don’t really want to take a class. You see, I am embarrassingly clumsy a bit shy when it comes to trying to make my body do new things in front of an audience – even when that audience is also learning what I am learning. If I’m going to be doing something in a group class setting, I want to have a chance of being good at it. Since I am not particularly flexible at this point in time, my chances of being good right off the bat are rather slim. Also, it seems you need to be barefoot to do yoga, and I’m not sure how comfortable I am with the idea of going barefoot on a surface that someone else has been barefoot on very recently. Think they’d let me wear Crocs?

Maybe I should get a yoga video game for the Wii or PS3? That might be close enough to instruction to keep me from killing myself, but still be done in the privacy of my own home.

Maybe I should try something else? Take up running or something? The chances of me quitting in that scenario are almost a certainty. I don’t like running.

Maybe if I practiced enough I’d get good at it, and then I’d start liking it more? I’m definitely bad at it now.

Phew, all this exercise contemplation is wearing me out. Time for bed.

Anyone remember Dance Dance Revolution?

I went through a brief period of obsession with this game. Who, me, obsessed? Couldn’t be!

And that is how I came to spend much of one happy summer working out in front of the TV, eyes glued to the arrows on the screen, gulping down juice between songs. Mostly I played with the Disney DDR game. It was tons of fun. It was also probably pretty good for me.

The most recent episode of the Simpsons featured a Zii game that was just like Dance Dance Revolution. I wonder of one truly does exist for the Wii? I have a Wii. I could be dancing again like I did way back when. It would probably again be pretty good for me.

And then I figured I might as well try freezing it – worst case scenario, I wouldn’t be able to eat it later, and it would get tossed then, and I’d be no worse off than if I’d tossed it in the beginning. So into the freezer it went.

Tonight, the leftovers were pulled from the freezer.

Turns out, you can totally freeze a Blizzard for later consumption! Yes, it came out rather firmer than a freshly made one, but I didn’t have to chisel away at a solid block in search of morsels that would fit comfortably into my mouth. I didn’t notice any deterioration in flavour – but then again, I have binary tastebuds, so your experience may differ if you try this at home.

I suppose, really, we toss other ice creams into freezers all the time, and the results are always good, so perhaps it was silly of me to worry about what would happen to a Blizzard, which is, essentially, ice cream. Ah well. I worried, I tested it, and now I know it can be done.

When I was about eight or nine, I became keenly interested in photography. My parents, being the encouraging sort, bought me a (cheap, intended for young amateur photographers) 35 mm SLR camera for my birthday one year, and I went bonkers taking pictures. My parents have a pretty extensive collection of photos from their early years together and my infancy and early childhood – apparently my father got hit with the same photo documentation bug that got me – and we would spend hours together in the evenings, just going through the photo albums, with me asking questions about the events in the photos, and laughing at the ones of me as a toddler making, well, toddler faces.

While my parents were less pleased with the rate at which I went through film – processing all that film was an unexpected expense in their budget, and some of the rolls held few worthwhile pictures – they continued to encourage my interest. When I tired of the bulk of the SLR camera, they bought me a slim, portable 110 film camera. When I grew frustrated with the image quality I was getting from the 110, they picked up a 35 mm point-and-shoot type camera for me.

By this time, I was in high school. As I moved on to university, my interest in photography waned – I no longer felt the same urgent need to photo document everything. Even though digital cameras took all the guesswork out of the picture taking process – you see right away whether your shot turned out or not – I no longer felt I needed to take a camera with me everywhere. Yes, every once in a while I’ll snap a little photo using the 2 megapixel camera in my iPhone, but that’s about it. You maybe noticed how few ‘selfpics’ I’ve posted….

Today, thinking back to my fond memories of looking through old pictures, I find myself wondering. If I started randomly taking pictures of things and storing them in albums on my computer, would the urge to photo document my life come back? Is it even possible to make something like that come back? The photo quality one can get with a digital SLR camera these days is pretty phenomenal, and there’s absolutely no worry about film wastage, since there’s no film.

If I had left them by a window with strong sunlight, then I could possibly see this happening, but these were safely tucked away in the depths of my food storage area. Maybe it happened in the car on the way home from Costco oh so long ago? But Costco is a fairly short drive away – fifteen minutes, tops.

Well, they’re still tasty, so I suppose I shan’t worry about it too much.

Anyways… A new twist….

It’s very, very late on a Saturday night….
I’ve made chili in my crockpot many times now. I spend an hour and a half chopping the vegetables, combining the ingredients, and pre-cooking the mushrooms and the ground beef that go into it. Then, the whole lot gets slow cooked for 5.5 to 6 hours on the crockpot’s high setting. So, I do the prep work in the morning, and then in the evening I have a big batch of chili waiting for me.

This works well on weekdays, but not so well on weekends, when I like to sleep in. So I’m trying something different.

Instead of a morning prep session, I’m trying the night before. See, the recipe I found online specified that if one were to use the low setting on the crockpot as opposed to the high, then one should let the chili slow cook for 12 hours. So if I do the prepping of the chili quite late the night before – say, getting the whole slow cooking process started around 11:30 AM or so – then the chili should be ready around lunchtime the next day. Once the slow cooking is done, my crockpot shifts into a keep warm mode. So my plan is to let the chili be kept warm until dinnertime, at which point I will tuck into it. Depending on how warm it’s been kept, I may make a frito pie out of it. If it seems piping hot still, I’ll just do up a frito pie bowl – basically a frito pie without the baking step.

Well. We’ll see how this turns out. Hopefully well enough.

That being said, going through the motions of food preparation at midnight was kind of weird. Like I was a bit mentally off or something.
