I can’t believe that January 2010 is nearly over and done.

We have officially passed the winter solstice, which means that the shortest day of this winter season has gone by. The days are getting longer now, by degrees, as we march steadily towards spring and summer.

The claim is that by dosing yourself with blue light as needed, you will find your energy levels improve.

Even though I feel okay in the winter, I was curious, and Costco has a fantastic return policy, so I grabbed one. It also happened to be on sale, which only encouraged me to purchase it.

And? Well, it’s a tough call. Like I said, I don’t notice a dip in my energy level, so when I tried dosing myself that one afternoon, I didn’t notice a surge either. Since that one trial, I’ve been sort of forgetting to keep trying the light dosing – again, because I seem to be totally fine running my days as is.

That being said, I have found a nifty feature of it that has kept me from returning it. They’re sort of at the extreme end of possible human beings, if that makes any sense whatsoever. The sorts of scenarios that unfold in each episode are also over-the-top, but again, not so far fetched that you roll your eyes and mentally shut down. It all just seems like fun. Maybe because of the dialogue – it’s really good. It’s fun and silly, but not like low-brow flatulent silly.

So why am I posting here about how much I like Better Off Ted? Because I hear it’s on the verge of being cancelled – in fact, I’m informed that it’s practically confirmed as being cancelled once season 2 finishes up. Which would be a real shame. TV needs more entertaining shows like this, and we could probably do with fewer of those reality shows that are set up to appeal to the baser, voyeuristic parts of human nature… Now, I admit I’m a bit of a voyeur – but more in the sexual realm!

I don’t know why this is happening, but I can’t ignore the observation that this waking up thing started right as I started regularly popping my vites in the evening.

The weirdest thing? I’m not super tired in the morning. Sure, I’m groggy, which is typical for me for the first ten minutes or so, but after that I’m fine – and I don’t get sleepy throughout the day either. I don’t hit a 2 PM must-nap-before-I-pass-out kind of wall. You’d never guess I was short 1 – 2 hours of sleep. Mostly I just spend those awake hours irritated that I’m freaking awake, but can’t do anything – I worry that if I start actually doing something, I’ll wake up even more, and then I’ll be trying to get through my day with only three or four hours of sleep. So I stay in bed, and mildly fume about wasting all this time.

Attempt to fix problem #1: try to take vitamins earlier in the day. We shall see….

When I bake up cookies, I only do one kind of cookie, and I do up at most a double batch. That’s lots of cookies, sure, but not in the grand scheme of entertaining. I don’t host big holiday dinners. If I were to do so, I can see how doing the cookie baking the day before or even earlier would be advantageous – baking cookies eats through time like kids through cookies. When I make a double batch of those chocolate cherry cookies, it takes me a good four hours to do it, and that’s with me trying to be as efficient as I can be. That’s four hours that a hostess might need to be spending, oh, I don’t know, preparing a big dinner? If you’re planning on roasting something in the oven, this creates not just a time conflict with cookie baking, but also a space conflict – oven real estate is limited. So I can understand why some might feel the need to do up a great big thwack of Christmas baking and then freeze the majority of it, defrosting as the goodies are needed.

Once, a close family friend made a fruitcake….. My mother liked it, and started making them as well…. I liked fruitcake day because the house smelled all cakey and wonderful.
