I’ve been sort of aware that I do not drink enough liquid throughout the course of a day for a while now. I just don’t feel thirsty very often. The challenge is to increase my water intake to the normal recommended level – 8 glasses of water per day, roughly 4 litres. And by water, I mean liquid – it could be juice. Pop only counts if I’ve had 1.5 litres of something healthier first – so this attempt to drink more will not just turn into a sugary Coke binge that makes my teeth fall out and my pancreas swell with overactivity.

Today was really the first day of me trying to meet this challenge, and in actuality I had sort of forgotten about it when I first woke up and went to work. At work, I was presented with a lovely hot chocolate from Tim Horton’s, and at that point, I remembered the challenge. So after I finished my hot chocolate, I snatched an empty 591 mL Coke bottle off my desk and went and filled it with filtered water from the special tap in the staff lunch room. I sipped from that bottle throughout the morning and early afternoon – by 2:30 PM, it was all gone. I considered going to refill it, but decided against it, since I was planning on leaving the office at 3:30 PM.

When I got home, the challenge was again forgotten, and I slipped into my usual habit of putzing about in front of the computer, decompressing from the day, without a drink beside me. Right before dinner, I remembered, and filled a 1 L Nalgene bottle with water from the sink. I forced myself to drink the whole thing within an hour. I sipped a bit of Coke with my dinner – maybe 250 mL?

If I were to venture a guess, I’d say I had a little over 2 L today. Halfway to the daily goal of 4 L….

Try try again tomorrow, I suppose. If I stop swishing while I walk…

Perhaps more relaxed than I should be, but in more recent days I find myself getting less distracted as I try to read.

For a few days, I’d been reading a few pages of Stephen Fry’s Stephen Fry in America, which is an entertaining trip through the US, with brief stops in each state – one chapter for each state, covering a day or two’s activities. I’m enjoying the narrative, but last night I thought it might be time to give real fiction a go again. With a little help, I got some additional ebooks loaded onto the Nook, and loaded up Douglas Coupland’s All Families are Psychotic.

Now, I’ve read JPod, and The Gum Thief, and I enjoyed both of them – JPod more so – so I had relatively high expectations. I am happy to report that so far, All Families are Psychotic does not disappoint. The first page sucked me right in, and I’m really enjoying my cruise along the story of this dysfunctional family.

Years ago, I would laughingly say that the problem stemmed from a lack of understanding of where I end and the world begins, but that just seems ludicrous – how could you not know where you end?

After this morning’s incident, though, I’ve had a little think about why I keep colliding with things that aren’t moving, and I think I have a logical answer. Not one that is terribly flattering to me, but at this point it seems to make a lot of sense, given how much I smack into things that really, really don’t move, like walls and countertops.

I think I’m so clumsy because I consistently fail to remember precisely where things are. I’ll have a general idea of where that thing should be, but the finer units of measure are off, or maybe completely absent. So when I’m climbing into the car, I’ll think I’ve bent my knees enough, like most days, except that this one time I’ve missed bending them enough by about two centimetres, which is totally enough to make me bump my head. When I reached for the salt and pepper this morning, I again thought I should have an extra centimetre of room, and thus reached a bit too high.

For someone who’s been known to get a bit obsessive and weird over details, you’d think that would extend to knowing where other objects are in the world around me. Apparently, it does not.

Okay guys, it’s been a while since I’ve posted a gallery from here… They have a unique shooting style. Sort of a fisheye lense, coupled with direct lighting, and then a bit of photoshop smoothing. I rely on takeout and prepackaged food far too much, and for reasons unknown, any time I have to expend some preparatory effort to get food on my plate it counts in my brain as a home-cooked meal, even when no actual cooking takes place. Sandwiches, for example. There’s totally no cooking involved in a sandwich, but if I make myself sandwiches for dinner I still think it counts as a home-cooked meal, and should not be counted as takeout. I also have it set in my head that home-cooked meals are automatically healthier and better for me than takeout.

Tonight’s dinner? Seasoned salmon fillet, from a frozen preprepared box, baked in the oven, with homemade french fries and a little salad composed of baby spinach and sliced fresh strawberries in raspberry vinaigrette. A fairly vocal portion of my brain insists that this is a home-cooked meal, and that it is therefore wholesome and healthy. The reality is that the salmon came out of a box, so really it wasn’t a home-cooked meal, and the potatoes were deep fried, so really it wasn’t healthy.

It was all very tasty though. I still don’t think it counts as takeout….

No wonder I keep turning to video games to escape. If things get to be too much for me, I can pause things and recalibrate myself. Or if I fail, I just hit that lovely Retry button….

In this day and age of widespread computer usage in all kinds of walks of life, I suspect the vast majority of people can type. I remember doing little typing drills at school when I was younger, and I took a typing and word processing class when I was 15. I remember being totally mesmerized by his typing – he could go at lightning speed! Me? I would have to hunt down each letter and poke the key with my index finger. One. At. A. Time.

So I was beyond thrilled when we started getting typing drill practice sessions at school. I don’t remember the name of the program we used – it’s entirely possible that I actually never knew the name – but I do remember sitting in that chair in front of the monstrous terminal, my back straight, elbows bent at 90 degree angles, feet resting as close to flat on the floor as I could manage, which means I had my toes touching the ground, fingers resting lightly on the home row keys, just like the image on the screen demonstrated. The drill would start, and a letter would appear in a box on the screen, and I was to press the appropriate key as quickly as I could. The program would score you based on speed and accuracy, and my classmates and I would compare our scores for bragging rights.

Those programs must be pretty effective, though, because I became a pretty competent typer. Which is good considering that now, I am practically fused with my computer – I use it for work, I use it for recreation. Not a single day goes by without me plunking down in front of the computer for at least thirty minutes. If an exceptional day prevents me from using the computer, I actually get mild pangs of withdrawal.

And I still type pretty quickly. Practice makes perfect, doncha know!!

Because it’s really strong. I mean, really strong. The carton has a little promotional nutritional blurb on it, and it tells you that 250 mL of this stuff is the equivalent of two servings of fruit according to Canada’s Food Guide. And that 250 mL also packs an impressive quantity of polyphenols – though apparently, not that impressive, because the number isn’t showing up in my head right now. Well. The number is, it’s 400, but I don’t know what unit of measurement is supposed to go with that number, and I’m too lazy to just get up off the couch and go take a peek in the fridge to find out.

So I figure when I’m diluting this stuff, I’m really getting about 125 mL into my glass. So that glass is one serving of fruit, with 200 insert-unit-here of polyphenols. That’s still good, right?

I presume so. It’s not changing in any event – the juice is too powerful to drink straight. Almost a bit bitter at times. The diluting also makes the drink more affordable. Healthy stuff ain’t cheap, it would seem…
