I’ve considered purchasing a biometric lock for my front door off and on for a while now – the sort where you program the thing to recognize your fingerprint, so rather than carry around a key, all you need to do is scan your finger whenever you want to unlock the door. Very spiffy sounding.

The only hiccup is, I often have some trouble with fingerprint scanners. They seem to not like me much. I suspect the problem is that the pads of my fingers are sort of smooth, so that the grooves of my prints are rather shallow, which means that when one of these scanning devices goes to capture an image, it gets a rather smudgy grubby one, which makes recognizing that print again later a bit of a crap shoot. I’d hate to be trapped outside my home one day, trying endlessly to get the door to grant me entrance by repeatedly swiping my finger, only to be rudely denied time after time, sobbing in frustration while the neighbours edge past me, hoping to avoid being noticed.

Maybe carrying a key isn’t such a bad thing after all.

I always worry about losing my key somewhere, and that worry would simply go away if I got the biometric lock. Of course, I was sharing this possibility with my father one day, and he snorted and said, Sure, but then if a thief wants into your place, he doesn’t need to find a key, he just needs to chop off your finger!

I was perusing the selection of shoes available in Zappos’ clearance bins today. In doing so, I learned a couple of things about myself.

Learned thing #1: I take more than the physical appearance of the shoes into account when evaluating them. The name the designer gave the shoes actually matters, it would seem. Names that appeal to me can help pull a pair of shoes into the under consideration pile. A name I don’t like can actually keep a pair of shoes that I otherwise might consider out of the pile. Similarly, an appealing brand name can make me take a second look at a pair of shoes. Boring names tend to get passed by. I’m not sure how I feel about this – on the one hand, it helps me sift through and narrow the range of choices, on the other hand, names don’t seem like an appropriate evaluation criterion for footwear.

Learned thing #2: I am not a total sucker for a deal. I saw a pair of shoes that I thought were ugly, but they were Dolce & Gabbana and they were on clearance for $300, regularly $800. Good deal, but I didn’t bite.

Thing I already knew: sometimes, I can be cheap budget-conscious. I saw several pairs of shoes that I liked the look of, but resisted the urge to buy, because I felt that the sale price was more than I was willing to pay for a pair of shoes.

I ended up ordering two pairs of shoes. One pair I thought would be nicely appropriate for work. The other pair is a cute pair of booties that I do like, but I’d be lying if I told you that the appeal didn’t skyrocket when I saw that the brand name was Me Too. Yes, that’s them. Size 6.

Of course, if she had been placed in Ravenclaw, well, she wouldn’t have become such good friends with Harry and Ron, and probably many things would have needed to be worked differently in the grand storyline. So I understand the practical reasons behind that sorting.

It just seems like a bit of a honking plot hole.

My mother is a big time Harry Potter fan. She pre-ordered both the Half-Blood Prince and the Deathly Hallows, and fairly well devoured them when they arrived. She actually read the Deathly Hallows twice in quick succession, because she realized upon finishing that she had missed a clue about the story’s outcome somewhere in the book, and so immediately flipped back to page one and started over. She found the clue about halfway through, determined that she was already halfway, and just kept going until she’d finished it again.

I am, er, less devoted to the franchise. Sure, I’ve seen the movies, well, all the ones that have been released thus far, but until a couple of months ago, I hadn’t read any of the books. That has since changed, actually – I’ve read the Philosopher’s Stone and the Chamber of Secrets, and I’ve just started the Prizoner of Azkaban. They’re pretty enjoyable reads.

Why the sudden interest? Well, it was a sort of preparation for an event my mother has been waiting for, for a rather long time – a trip to Harry Potter’s World of Wizarding, at Universal Studios in Orlando.

Mum got her first glimpse of the Hogwart’s replica today. It was rather insanely crowded – there were lines to enter all the gift shops, both in Hogwart’s itself as well as all the accompanying shops in the recreation of Hogsmeade. There was a devastatingly impressive 90 minute wait posted for the main attraction, Harry Potter’s Forbidden Journey, which is a sort of extreme flight simulator thrill ride. You climb aboard an enchanted bench, get restrained into place, and then are treated to a tumultuous ride through Hogwart’s and the surrounding area, complete with sharp turns, dips, and jolts, with screens set up to enhance the illusion of flying through the air, and various special effects fly around you. We did the patient, well-behaved guest thing, working our way through a seemingly endless maze through the castle grounds – first along the walkway leading up to the castle, then through the dungeons, then through the gardens, then through the upper corridors of the castle, where we were treated to distractions in the form of moving portraits of the school’s founders, a little speech from Dumbledore, and a little speech from Harry, Ron, and Hermione. It was a neat little tour, but boy oh boy, were they ever anticipating large crowds at that attraction. And people were absolutely crammed into all the available waiting spaces.

I screamed my way through the whole thing. I wonder what the strangers who were also assigned to my bench thought of that.

It was a very fun, very well done ride – I don’t really like droppy-type rides, hence all the screaming, but I still smiled when I was released from my bench, I didn’t tear from the building with a wild, panicked look on my face, and I’ll happily do it again.

If wizarding were real, and I was fortunate enough to be a magic sort of person, I wonder which house I’d be assigned to? Given certain personality traits I possess – ahem, screaming my way through rather unextreme thrill rides – I suspect Gryffindor is off the list, and other traits would knock Slytherin out as well. I’d like to believe I’d be a candidate for Ravenclaw, but probably I’d get tossed into Hufflepuff.

Unfortunately, Krispy Kreme locations are not exactly abundant in this country, so going to fetch some can be quite a trek, and often is ruled out for reasons of practicality. So most of my donut runs are either to Tim Horton’s, which is still good, just not Krispy Kreme, or sometimes I just the local grocery store.

The local grocery store donuts tend to be a bit more hit or miss. Sometimes they’re dry. Sometimes, they’re not sweet enough. Usually I’m left with a sad recognition that these are nowhere near Krispy Kreme donuts.

A few years ago, I was apartment hunting, and I viewed a place that was across the street from a Dunkin’ Donuts. I didn’t rent that apartment, but I wonder how my life would have run differently if I had.

I sort of wonder if my dress size would have changed….

I have a Facebook account, but don’t really use it for its intended purpose. It warned me that the system would not allow me in if I got any of the questions wrong, and that if I was not sure, I should enter I don’t know as my answer, and that I would only be allowed to do that twice.

Nervously, I started the test. I’d never had to do this verification thing with Facebook before, and I wasn’t sure of what to expect – I had no memory of setting up any security questions, never mind what sorts of answers I had given upon doing so.

As it turned out, it was the spiffiest identification procedure I’ve ever been through. It presented me with two pictures, pulled from the online collections of one of my friends, outlined the relevant person where necessary, and then asked me to identify that person from a multiple choice list of possibilities. I had to identify seven friends in this manner. Very funky, no memorization of trivial bits of information necessary – like Did I list my high school’s full name, or the shortened version of it? Which, by the way, has caused me grief in the past. It also strikes me as a pretty good system, since a stranger would really not be able to fumble their way through the process – especially with the zero failure policy.

I wish banks and credit card companies could figure out a way to do this. I always get tripped up by questions like What was the amount of your last payment?

The only part of what I said in placing the order that could remotely have been heard as Diet was I’d like a, but that was at the very beginning, which would have made my order Diet Cinnamon Melts and a large Coke, please, which makes absolutely no sense.

So there I sat, with a blurky large Diet Coke, and two options – drink it or pitch it. It only cost me a dollar, so it totally wasn’t worth getting back in the car and driving back there to complain and get the pop that I actually wanted. I settled on drinking it anyway. After all, I did spend an whole dollar on it, so I was going to drink my pop, darnitall!

As it turned out, this was a mistake. As I reached the two-thirds mark on the drink, I began to feel some uneasiness in my tummy. The uneasiness developed into an uncomfortably sore tummy that lasted for about an hour. It would seem that my body does not like aspartame, or one of the other interesting compounds they use to make a sweetened beverage that miraculously does not contain calories.

Now I know better. Avoid diet pop. Always. Full stop.

While this seems great, there is a downside to this – not losing zombies means I’m not planting any new zombies, nor am I planting any vegetable crops in the hopes of mutating my zombies, which means I’m not advancing any in the game. Sadly, successful invasions don’t award experience points – I got some for the very first invasion, because it was successful, but every single one after that has given me bupkiss. Well. I get some gold. But gold isn’t the issue here, since I get gold from harvesting the regular crops too. Gold I got. Experience I need.

I wonder how I should proceed from here? I have a sneaking suspicion that Old McDonnell won’t get any tougher until I’ve advanced some more, level-wise. Probably I should just keep planting zombies for the experience – the excess zombies get sold automagically upon harvesting. It seems so cheap. But I think the game is forcing my hand here.
