Stale chips are gross. They shouldn’t taste like peanuts. Forget it. Chips aren’t too pricey. I can get more.

I’ve had my Nook for precisely three full days.

Saturday afternoon, I read a complete novel. A shortish novel, but a novel nonetheless. It was hardly riveting, and yet I could not put it down. Just kept flipping those epages, one after the other, until there were no more.

Saturday night, I started another book, just before going to sleep. I started Twenties Girl, by Sophie Kinsella. Yes, I like Sophie Kinsella – the storylines at points are almost too girly for my tastes, but I really enjoy the narrative style, and she throws in enough funny stuff that I can tolerate the bits of sappy mushiness, as they’re pretty short-lived and well spaced, and even when a character is being an absolute idiot, I don’t get so frustrated that I simply can’t stand to read another word. I read more of it on Sunday, not in one big session like I had the day before with Finger Lickin’ Fifteen, but I spent a fair amount of time on it, probably. I got roughly halfway through, but then again, it appears to be roughly double the length of the book I read Saturday, so I suppose really I was keeping the same pace.

Today I had to return my thoughts to work, which means no fiction reading, though I’ll likely sneak some in before drifting off to dreamland. It’s funny – I didn’t touch any fiction reading for so long, and then I get a wee taste of it and I’m suddenly hooked, craving the next fix.

I have this impression, though, that when I read Sophie Kinsella, some Briticisms sneak into my writing. It doesn’t happen with other authors – or is it subtle enough that I simply don’t notice? Can anyone reading this tell that I’ve been reading a lot of British writing in the past twenty-four hours? Did the writing get subtly more American in the twenty-four hours previous to that? (Janet Evanovich is American.) I find I really notice it after reading Sophie Kinsella. Suddenly things are brilliant. I must admit, I’m thankful that I don’t start tossing fab around – that one seems a bit much.

Of course, maybe it’s just all in my head, and I always just write like me.

It was a Janet Evanovich book – Finger Lickin’ Fifteen, the fifteenth in the Stephanie Plum series. I read the second one years and years ago, and was rather charmed by the narrative style and storyline, and proceeded to read them all. By number seven or so, I was starting to find the storylines rather repetitive, and the hijinks that made up the series of events in each one were getting further and further out there. Still, I keep reading them, because the narrative style is still pretty fun.

I got through the whole book before dinner. It wasn’t exactly a long, epic tale, but still. A novel in an afternoon.

Anyways, the futility of planning…

I went for a haircut yesterday. Which means that I have recently known the bliss of having someone manipulate my hair around, I felt the joy of the new swing of newly shortened hair, and today I’m eyeballing myself in all reflective surfaces wondering if it’s shorter than last time (probably not) and if I’ve made a huge mistake (also doubtful).

I was actually planning on holding off on this haircut until mid March or so, but my stylist is 7 months pregnant, and late stage pregnancy can be unpredictable, so I thought I’d better play it safe and get the cut sooner rather than later. Given that she will likely have the baby in April at some point, I figured it would be a while before my next cut – she mentioned wanting to keep up part time work and not take too much time off, but I figured I shouldn’t count on her being available for several months.

So I sat down and had a think. This shorter do tends to get shaggy looking as it grows out, but during the summer months I tend to not have any contract work, which means pigtails and ponytails are totally an option for dealing with unruly hair. A plan formed – I could just let my hair grow over the summer, and in mid to late August I could see about getting a cut before starting up with real work again in the fall. Plus, this had the added benefit of shifting my haircut schedule around a bit – instead of wanting a cut in November, I won’t want another one until late December or early January, and then the next one will want to come in late April or so. This seemed like a good plan.

Turns out, though, that she’s only taking 6 weeks off after she has the baby, and then she plans to return to the part time schedule. So getting a haircut in late June or early July would have been completely doable.

Oh well. We’ll see how it goes. I may try to hold off till August anyway….

The little piece at the top came loose – one corner’s adhesive lost its grip, and some dust and other assorted gunk attached itself, thus destroying any remaining stickiness, so me pressing the little flap back into place on that corner did nothing. It also started to look dirty, and I decided that it must be time, and gently peeled the piece right off. As promised by the film manufacturer, no adhesive remained after the film had been removed.

And? I ran my finger along that exposed bit of surface, felt how smooth and slick it was, and instantly remembered what it was like when the whole device felt like that. It made me want to strip all of the wrapping off… It just feels more natural without the wrapping!

For now, though, what’s left of the wrapping remains in place. I may remove it over the summer, though, and let the scratches come as they may – at that point, my iPhone will be two years old!

Last summer, I learned that a very nice syrup for snow cones could be made by mixing up a simple syrup – a supersaturated sugar and water solution – and adding two packets of Kool-Aid drink crystals to it. So I bought some packets to try, and it worked really well.

The blue raspberry lemonade was made up into syrup, but it was rather tart, so I won’t be repeating that one either. The tropical punch one never made it into syrup form – I sort of forgot about it.

Today, I needed to refill my drink pitcher, and reached for the drink crystals, and ended up going with tropical punch. The packet is blue. For whatever reason, I expected the crystals to also turn the drink blue – after all, cherry comes in red packets and produces red liquid, grape comes in purple packets and produces purple liquid. Thus, this blue packet should produce blue liquid.

It totally didn’t. It came out red. An orangier red than what the cherry stuff makes, but totally totally not blue.

What’s next? Green snow? (Because, you know, snow should be white, since it comes from clouds, and clouds are white…)
