The bad news? I need to be more vigilant when it comes to flossing. Part of my flossing problem has been that whenever I run out, I keep forgetting to buy more. Shamefully long stretches of time can go by with me not flossing simply because I can’t. Then, once I remember to restock, it takes me a bit of time to get back into that habit – because, after all, my teeth didn’t fall out while I wasn’t flossing, so maybe my super duper toothbrush is able to pick up some of the slack.

Well. No more of that kind of logic. Flossing every night. Gingivitis, consider yourself on notice.

I’m still super pleased I dodged the drill, though. Here’s hoping for more good news at my next appointment, which I’ve already scheduled, for December…

No wonder I keep turning to video games to escape. If things get to be too much for me, I can pause things and recalibrate myself. Or if I fail, I just hit that lovely Retry button….

Since acquiring the handbag, I have used it every single day – every time I walk out my door and into the world, I have that handbag with me. For such heavy usage, it has held up remarkably well – no worn out holes in the fabric, no unsightly patches of visible dirt staining its sides. True, it is not in pristine shape, but it’s still looking quite good.

In late November 2009, Coach mailed me a little postcard that offered me 25% off any purchase. I used it to acquire a new wallet, which I also still love to bits.

So I have a handbag I love. I have a wallet I love. My needs have been met with great satisfaction.

Still, I very recently received yet another 25% off postcard from Coach. I looked at it, and thought, Well, I don’t need anything, and turned to toss it into the recycling pile.

But I stopped. I stopped because I thought, Well, I could use a smaller dressier handbag for those times when I shouldn’t have my great big honking one with me.

Today, when I walked past a mall pet store, they had a hedgehog out. He (?) was a cute little guy, maybe the size of standard computer mouse? I’ve had my Nook for precisely three full days.

Saturday afternoon, I read a complete novel. A shortish novel, but a novel nonetheless. It was hardly riveting, and yet I could not put it down. Just kept flipping those epages, one after the other, until there were no more.

Saturday night, I started another book, just before going to sleep. I started Twenties Girl, by Sophie Kinsella. Yes, I like Sophie Kinsella – the storylines at points are almost too girly for my tastes, but I really enjoy the narrative style, and she throws in enough funny stuff that I can tolerate the bits of sappy mushiness, as they’re pretty short-lived and well spaced, and even when a character is being an absolute idiot, I don’t get so frustrated that I simply can’t stand to read another word. I read more of it on Sunday, not in one big session like I had the day before with Finger Lickin’ Fifteen, but I spent a fair amount of time on it, probably. I got roughly halfway through, but then again, it appears to be roughly double the length of the book I read Saturday, so I suppose really I was keeping the same pace.

Today I had to return my thoughts to work, which means no fiction reading, though I’ll likely sneak some in before drifting off to dreamland. It’s funny – I didn’t touch any fiction reading for so long, and then I get a wee taste of it and I’m suddenly hooked, craving the next fix.

I have this impression, though, that when I read Sophie Kinsella, some Briticisms sneak into my writing. It doesn’t happen with other authors – or is it subtle enough that I simply don’t notice? Can anyone reading this tell that I’ve been reading a lot of British writing in the past twenty-four hours? Did the writing get subtly more American in the twenty-four hours previous to that? (Janet Evanovich is American.) I find I really notice it after reading Sophie Kinsella. Suddenly things are brilliant. I must admit, I’m thankful that I don’t start tossing fab around – that one seems a bit much.

Of course, maybe it’s just all in my head, and I always just write like me.

When I got my iPhone back in July 2008, I put on a protective film in pretty short order. Now, just before Christmas, one of the pieces of my wrapping came loose. The one I got comes in four main parts – the piece for the screen, a piece with some funky flaps for the back and sides, and then two little skinny pieces for the parts at the top and bottom sides where the flaps of the back piece can’t reach without blocking off important things, like the earphone jack, the power button, and the charger port. The little piece at the top came loose – one corner’s adhesive lost its grip, and some dust and other assorted gunk attached itself, thus destroying any remaining stickiness, so me pressing the little flap back into place on that corner did nothing. It also started to look dirty, and I decided that it must be time, and gently peeled the piece right off. As promised by the film manufacturer, no adhesive remained after the film had been removed.

And? I ran my finger along that exposed bit of surface, felt how smooth and slick it was, and instantly remembered what it was like when the whole device felt like that. It made me want to strip all of the wrapping off… It just feels more natural without the wrapping!

For now, though, what’s left of the wrapping remains in place. I may remove it over the summer, though, and let the scratches come as they may – at that point, my iPhone will be two years old!

I worry that I have squandered my down time, not made the most of what I have been given, wasted the precious hours I could have transformed into the most fun ever.

Really, though, it’s all about giving myself a rest, a reboot, a refresh, right?

Well. Nothing wrong with wanting a bit of a longer rest, there.

What do you do with your weekends?

I know folks who spend their weekends running all kinds of errands. My parents fall into this category. They make a huge trip to the grocery store, stocking up on food items for the remainder of the week. This trip is, of course, supplemented by a couple of mid week trips as well, since fresh produce tends to be not so fresh after five days in the fridge. Some things can take it, but others get really unappetizing. Still, there is a major trip on the weekend. Other shopping gets done too. It’s quite rare for these sorts of folks to be home on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Me? I am not a member of this category. It is odd for me to be out and about on the weekend. Not impossible – it’s not as though I become housebound once Friday night hits – but probably I will be home on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I try to run errands during the week as much as possible, so that I can stay home on the weekend.

Weekends are my time. I feel little to no guilt if I’m not working – unless a big scary deadline loometh – and I indulge my hobbies and video game addictions. Usually I do get dressed, but every once in a while, I’ll just spend the entire day in pyjamas.

Like today. Didn’t get dressed. Didn’t do a lick of work. And I’m okay with that…

Because tomorrow is another work day….

I did some laundry yesterday – clothes – and as I was stuffing them back into my drawers, I noticed that there was quite a bit of effort involved in making everything fit into the available space.

Now, I’m not someone who goes out and buys clothes in these giant sprees. I know someone who fairly recently decided she needed a new wardrobe and went out shopping for a day – she stopped when she determined that her arms were too tired from carrying her purchases from store to store. I don’t do that. Then again, maybe that’s because I do the majority of my clothes shopping online now. Yes, I’ve been known to put through biggish orders from Victoria’s Secret, but only during their semi-annual sale, and I do exercise some degree of self control – I don’t think I’ve ever ordered more than $200 USD worth of stuff in one go. Considering my insane quirky need to purchase items in multiples of two, I would say that the evidence suggests that I am not an online clothes shopaholic.

Still, I do buy clothes here and there, and when things are coming in but nothing leaves, you end up with a storage problem. I know what I need to do.

Purge.

I need to go through all my drawers and closet space, and pull out the items I have not worn once in the past two years. The stuff that I don’t wear because it’s worn out, I need to decide to either keep as grubwear, or throw it out. The stuff that’s still in good shape, but gets no wear anyway, needs to be bagged and donated to some charitable organization that is in want of gently used women’s clothing.

I know what I need to do.

And yet? Probably I won’t do it until summer at the earliest. Why?

Okay guys, it’s pretty much the weekend. It’s time for a weekend party gallery. In other words, drunk women, male strippers, and a whole lot of groping and fondling!!! I am not a vegetarian. I eat meat. I really like meat. Beef is my favourite, followed fairly closely by lamb. Yep, those baby sheep make for pretty tasty vittles.

Yet I’m not really a fan of cooking meat. I’m pretty sure this is a cooking confidence issue, with the big issue being I have none. With meat, one has to be pretty careful, especially if one is cooking up poultry. If you don’t cook it enough, you could end up poisoning everyone you feed. If you cook it too much, you end up with rubbery, tough, inedible chow. It’s like cooking for Baby Bear all the time, with higher stakes, and it makes me nervous. A lot of pressure, there. I worry as I’m preparing the dish, even though I’ve never ever made myself or anyone else sick with undercooked meat, because I tell myself that if I get over-confident and complacent, that’s when the salmonella fiend will strike through cross contamination. And then I get the weird overzealous urge to dip everything in bleach. Don’t worry, I haven’t and won’t ever do that – I don’t even have any bleach in my home.

Vegetables, on the other hand, are more forgiving. The worst consequence of undercooked veggies? Extra crunch. I’ve undercooked carrots before, I’ve undercooked broccoli before. Again, no one got sick. In fact, no one even complained, because there’s nothing wrong with a little crunch in your veggies. In fact, I would much rather have undercooked veggies than overcooked veggies, so I’m probably on the shorter end of the cooking time spectrum. I wonder if that makes for slightly more nutritious veggies?

Hmm. I should make stuffed peppers this weekend. Yum.
