Now I have it! I unpacked it, assembled it, and have played with it a little, you know, just to make sure it works. It does, though deploying energy isn’t as responsive as I’ve become accustomed to, but it seems to be improving with play. Either I’m learning the idiosyncrasies of this controller, or there’s a weird adaptive phase where the guitar learns the sorts of motions used in energy deployment. I’m not too worried about it - it took some time for me to get the hang of it with the first guitar too.

In any event, the old guitar will be packed up and shipped off sometime soon… How can I work now that I have a new one??

Anyways, speaking of sticking things where they don’t belong, I went for another eye checkup today. The verdict? Still dry.

They actually did a dryness test on me. They took these little strips of paper, bent them, and then stuck the ends inside my lower eyelids. I then kept my eyes closed for five minutes, while the papers absorbed the tears my eyes would produce. My eyes were numbed during the test, by the way, so the results would reflect normal, unirritated tear production.

The left eye produced way more tears than the right eye. Only the tip of the paper that had actually been under my eyelid was wet on the right hand side. One the left hand side, sufficient moisture had been produced to spread along the strip for a bit.

But still, my eyes are way dry.

The nice thing about today’s visit was the doctor I saw was the one I saw on my very first few appointments. She said today that she suspects I’m having an allergic reaction to something, and prescribed me some medicated drops to help with that. I mentioned that she had been leaning that way before but subsequent checks with other doctors had dismissed the theory, and she said that there were other signs of allergic reaction in my eyelids that made her reconsider the allergy hypothesis. I asked if what she was seeing could also be due to the dryness test they’d done, and she said no, what she was seeing was more than what the test causes.

She also said the pattern of dryness going on strongly suggests that I don’t actually close my eyes all the way when I blink them, and that I actually sleep with my eyes open just a wee bit. Which would also explain why I wake up with miserably dry feeling eyes. Creepy…

So this is what I need to work on - closing my eyes!

Before I report my findings, I’d like to make a few of my own biases clear.

This is, however, a taste test, so instead of throwing away the less appealing looking toast, I proceeded to eat half of the crunchy slice. It was good. The bits of peanuts mixed in adds a nice extra crunch.

Half of the smooth slice was next. It was less interesting, texture wise, but it was still very very nice.

In terms of actual taste, I think they were largely the same, though.

So, I am left to conclude that although I do have a preference for the smooth peanut butter, this seems to be based purely on its spreadability and resulting appearance. I do not find the crunchy peanut butter unappealing, and therefore am inclined to keep both varieties stocked in my home so that I may use whichever one strikes my fancy at a given moment….

Apparently, the problem was something of a snowball effect - even though I was pretty good about putting drops in my eyes throughout the day, it just wasn’t quite enough to keep up with the drying, so the result was a dryness that slowly got progressively worse. With the way the dryness persisted and worsened over time in spite of switching back to preservative free drops, it is extremely unlikely that I was having an allergic reaction to the preservative in the bottled drops earlier. This is good news, because the preservative free drops are considerably more expensive. The doctor actually gave me a small sample bottle of some other thicker drops in a bottle, saying that they are thicker and thus offer better lubrication than regular drops in a bottle, but they don’t cause the same degree of vision blurring as the drops I’m using right now. I think I’ll give them a try on Monday - I want a few more days with this heavy duty stuff first. If they work out, I’ll see about getting myself a bigger bottle. Hopefully I’ll be able to track one down at Costco, where prices are more reasonable.

Anyways, on Monday night, as bedtime approached, I started feeling a bit of a weird headache. The pain was sort of localized behind my right eye. I figured it must be some sort of fatigue or something, so I just went through my usual bedtime rituals and went to sleep.

In fact, it seemed to be worse - my eye wasn’t opening as wide as it normally does. I had also developed some light sensitivity - when a bright enough light source entered my field of vision, it would send a shot of pain back into my brain, much like the headache I’d had Monday night.

This morning, my eye wasn’t as painful as it had been last night, but it still wasn’t better, so I called the clinic and asked if it would be possible to see a doctor today. They squeezed me in, and the doctor looked at my eyes and mentioned that they were still very, very dry. She checked out my right eye, and identified the problem - an epithelial imperfection, where a section of tissue seemed to be missing. She suspects that what happened was my eye dried out more than usual while sleeping Monday night, and the lid stuck to the cornea. When I opened my eye, the lid took away a bit of tissue with it!!! ***EWWWWW***

Now my eye needs to heal. Given how bad the dryness is, she advised me to use the super thick drops I’ve been using at night all day, in both eyes. Trouble is, this stuff is so thick that it blurs my vision when I put the drops in. This makes working pretty much impossible - I can’t see enough to read well, and I’m supposed to try to put these drops in pretty consistently, so I really only get about a half hour of good clear vision before I should start thinking about putting more drops in.

I’m back to see the doctor again on Friday. Here’s hoping for fantastic improvement before then. Why can’t my eyes just behave????
