Normally, I take vitamin supplements to try and make up for whatever deficiencies pop up in my typical day’s caloric intake. While I don’t think I have terrible eating habits, I do not suffer from delusions that my diet is balanced, healthy, and nutritionally sufficient. Let’s face it – I don’t eat breakfast, and lunch can be hit or miss with me. Already I’m on the negative side of balanced eating. Throw in the fact that I’m quite fond of fast food, and suddenly it makes sense that some people – those who don’t see the bigger picture of my meal planning – might wonder how it is that I haven’t yet come down with a nasty case of scurvy.

The trouble with the vitamin supplements, is I take them at dinnertime, and if for any reason I’m not home when I’m having dinner, I end up not taking them. If I’m not home for a somewhat extended period of time – say, I’m away on a little vacation – then I lose the habit of taking them with dinner, and don’t resume the practice when I try to renormalize my daily schedule.

I realize that it’s been a while since I’ve had a vitamin.

So I’m going to take some tonight.

We’ll see if I remember tomorrow!!!

Well, update for my iPhone, that is.

The iPhone 3.0 Software Update came out – actually, I’m not terribly sure when it was really released, but it entered my sphere of awareness this morning. I figured, this is a pretty significant update, so I should do it.

So, even though I had just charged up my phone overnight, I unplugged it from the wall this morning and plugged it into the laptop. I figured it would take about five minutes to download and install the update – I love fast Internet access – and make for a quick feeling of accomplishment. No more random thoughts of, Gosh, I should update my phone.

Phone is plugged in, recognized by computer, iTunes launches.

Oh, wait. There’s an iTunes update. Well, maybe I can skip that.

Phone syncs up. Lovely. I press the Update button to update the OS software.

Alert. Apparently, I’m not allowed to do this until I’ve updated iTunes as well. Fine.

Hang about, waiting while the iTunes update downloads – not so long – and installs – a bit longer.

Oh. Now the computer wants to be rebooted. Terrific.

Alert. Updates for Windows have been found and will be downloaded and installed on this reboot. Okay, whatever, just get it done!

Sit around during the longest reboot ever. Load up iTunes again, wait for it to detect the phone.

Alert. New iPhone software is available. Do I want to download and install it?

YES.

What I figured would take about five minutes ended up actually requiring twenty minutes of my life.

And after all that, what do I think of the new software?

I haven’t had a chance to really play with it yet. I did a quick test of the new Voice Memo app, and I noticed that they took the SMS text out of the text bubble on the button for the texting app. But that’s about as far as I got with it….

Sometimes I dislike apple…

Recently, I bought a 2 L tub of Breyer’s ice cream in mint chocolate chip.

I’m a big fan of the combination of mint and chocolate flavours in an ice cream. My absolute favourite ice cream flavour of all time was Laura Secord’s French and Frosted Mint – it was exceptional because there was a ribbon of fudge running through it, for extra chocolatey goodness, yet the ice cream itself was somehow a nice consistent mix of mint and chocolate. I find most mint chocolate chip ice creams are really mint ice cream with chocolate chips or chunks in them, so you don’t really get the two flavours mixed together until you chew down on those chocolate bits. If you happen to get a bit where there are no chocolate chunks, it’s just mint.

I still buy mint chocolate chip ice cream from the grocery store from time to time though.

This Breyer’s stuff though. I don’t know. On the box it says no artificial flavours or colours. That’s supposed to be a good thing. And I know that not everything mint-flavoured in life is green in colour, so clearly the green of other mint chocolate chip ice creams comes from artificial colouring.

Yet I was surprised when I opened the tub to see white ice cream, and not green.

Apparently, my ideas about appropriate behaviour in public are going a bit off the usual path.

Today, as I was checking out with my purchases at the grocery store, I recognized the song being played over the store’s speakers. Okay, I suppose that means that I haven’t totally lost perspective on what one can and cannot do in public without drawing undue attention to oneself. I just need to keep a closer eye on that Yay, music time! switch in my brain when I’m not inside my own home.

Day Five: the Louvre day, strategically chosen because the Louvre is open late on Wednesdays – they don’t kick you out until 9 PM, which means one doesn’t need to get there right when the doors open to have a nice long stretch to admire the collection. This is good for me, since I am not one who is skilled when it comes to early starts. I think I managed to get myself to the museum by 2 PM, and since I had the Paris Museum Pass, I could bypass the lines and pretty well waltz right in – well, after clearing security. I would have to pay extra to see the temporary exhibit, Les Portes du Ciel, which was all ancient Egyptian stuff, and I would have liked to, but I delayed buying the ticket in favour of checking out the permanent collection first, and ended up not having time for the additional exhibit. As it turned out, I didn’t have time for the entire permanent collection either!

I headed in with some priorities – I wanted to see the more popularly known items first, then move on to contemplate the others in the collection. In all honesty, I’ve never been someone who really appreciates fine art. I mean, I know that there are things I like, and things I don’t like, but I’ve had a tough time understanding how someone can sit in front of a painting for more than five seconds ‘appreciating’ it. One of my uncles likes to do this. He can sit and admire a single painting for what seems to me to be a ludicrously long time. Knowing this about myself, I figured six hours would be plenty of time for someone like me to cruise through the Louvre’s entire collection.

That being said, the first priority piece I found was the Venus de Milo. It wasn’t in its usual gallery, which was being renovated, and so it was placed in a sort of hallway. It was a large hallway – the Louvre was once a palace, so everything has grandeur to it – and it was all by itself, with a cluster of admirers around it. I looked at it, and read the little information blurb about it, and looked at it some more. I did the same thing when I found Victory, while following the signs to the Mona Lisa. There was a crowd around the Mona Lisa. Still, I managed to get as close as I could – they had a railing set up to prevent visitors from getting too close, probably for greater equity in picture taking and viewing, because the painting itself was inside a glass enclosure, so it’s not as though someone could accidentally get bumped into it and damage it. It’s not a particularly large painting, but I stayed and looked at it for a rather long while for me. I examined it for all the details I’ve heard about it – the offset of the background landscape on the two sides, the lack of eyebrows, the enigmatic smile.

Then, I backtracked a bit, remembering another Da Vinci work that calls the Louvre home – Madonna on the Rocks. I found it, and found myself a place near the front of the small crowd – actually it was a tour group – and contemplated it for some time. I actually really like this one. The Mona Lisa is nice, but Madonna on the Rocks I actually like. The people depicted seemed to have a glow to them – for all I know, it was simply good lighting, but I stared at this painting for several minutes, and I could have stayed longer, but there was still so much to see. After tracking back to the Mona Lisa room to take a peek at the security measures to see if the novel had been accurate – it was – I worked my way through a large chunk of the Louvre’s permanent collection of paintings. Not all of them, but a pretty substantial amount, I hope. Then suddenly, it was time for me to get some food, so I found a food court just off the main lobby area and had a decent vegetable sandwich, then worked my way through the Louvre’s permanent collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts before the museum closed. As I exited the museum, I saw the inverted crystal pyramid with the marble pyramid beneath it, and then outside I saw the two crystal pyramids that jut up in the former palace courtyard…

All in all, it was a pretty worthwhile day!!
