Now that I’ve had a couple of days to adjust, and a chance to wash my hair myself, I’m going back on what I said earlier. I don’t think this round of trimming left me with shorter than ever hair. I think it’s about the same as it was the last time I was in for a cut. All the augh, shorter! talk was just shock, I guess.

This leads me to believe that there is a fair amount that I don’t know about how hair grows. It seems like it should be fairly simple and straightforward – each hair strand grows out at a uniform rate from the scalp. Generally speaking, I notice about a half inch of growth each calendar month.

The amount of hair that was actually trimmed off and abandoned on the salon floor, however, seemed to far exceed what should have been about an inch and a half off every strand on my head. As she put in layers to reshape my mop, she seemed to be lopping a fair-sized chunk off of some sections. The surprising thing, to me, at least, is that she did all this at the last cut too. If my hair only grew about an inch and a half, maybe two inches, how can she go through and chop away as if this was the first time I was getting this particular style cut, with some pieces losing four or five inches?

It does feel rather liberating, though, to look down at the trimmings on the floor after a cut, and think to yourself, Phew, look at all that dead weight that I’m no longer carrying around with me. Anyways, it’s off to see a show tonight!

I didn’t think to take a before picture of my hair earlier.

It’s too late now – it’s shorter. Totally shorter. The shortest it’s been yet on this latest short hair spree. Well, I suppose it’s not really short in overall length, but the layers are clipped up shorter than they were before – she really went to town trimming up those layers. I suppose the result is very summery, and I do think it looks good. It’s just so short! I’m happy, but I’m still sort of in a state of shock over it.

I had been thinking that I might wait till November for my next haircut – let this grow out some for wintertime. With these layers clipped up the way they are, I suspect I have a better chance of lasting that long before the thickness just drives me bonkers.

I’m getting a haircut tomorrow!

I thought it was the scalp massage that I would get with my cut at this one salon I used to go to – those were amazing, but their stylist turnover was sort of high, I tried out three different stylists within five years because they kept leaving the salon. So I tried someone new at a different salon, much better price, no scalp massage, and I walked out after the first visit much happier with the cut, so I keep going back. And I still like the actual process of getting my hair cut. So it can’t have been the scalp massage alone.

I’m all buzzy with anticipation for tomorrow. Even though I’m not anticipating big change. I’m still looking forward to my treat.

I’ve been to see a few movies in the past week and a half – circumstances conspired in such a way that people around me went a bit movie nuts.

First up was “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian”. The first one was better.

Next up was “Up”. I quite enjoyed this one, and we even saw it in 3D. Ohhhhh, spiffy. They charged extra on admission for the 3D spiffyness, so we kept our 3D glasses as souvenirs. No, they weren’t stolen! They came individually wrapped in little plastic bags, and no one said that we were required to return them – they had a big bin out to collect them from folks who didn’t want to keep them. But we kept ours.

Then came “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”. Up was better, but this was better than Night at the Museum. Again, viewed in spiffy 3D.

One thing that was common to all these movies was a trailer for G-Force. Another CGI wonder movie with animated guinea pigs as the heroes and hapless humans as the villains. Looks like it could have some entertainment potential, though I’m not sure I’d splurge to see it in theatres. Even with the spiffy 3D.

Lots of movies are featuring the 3Dness. I wonder if I could convince them to waive the extra 3D charge if I brought my own glasses?

Trying new recipes is fun. Once upon a time, I thought it would be a good idea for me to make a real effort to sift through my cookbooks – somehow I’ve accumulated a fair number – on a regular basis to find new things to try making to add to my cooking repertoire. The idea being I’d progress beyond my current standing as a moderately competent cook.

I hadn’t done it in a while. I’ve tried two in the past few days though – Friday I tried a new pasta sauce that was basically pureed roasted red peppers cooked with lots of garlic and some onion and basil, then tossed with tortellini. I cheated and bought pre-made Olivieri tortellini from Costco. The end result was quite tasty, though.

Tonight I tried another new pasta dish. It wasn’t very saucy, but it still managed to be quite flavourful – mix together some soy sauce, plum sauce, and sesame oil, set aside, then stir fry some green beans and red pepper, then cook some shrimp with some garlic, ginger, black pepper and green onion. Add back the veggies, then douse in sauce, then toss in some cooked pasta – I used angel hair pasta – and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Again, quite tasty.

I wonder what I’ll have a go at next????

In the summertime, the reverse scenario plays out. I’ll be chugging along working on something, and think that I’m being super productive and getting lots and lots done, and then I’ll look at my watch or the clock and go, Whoa, it’s 7 PM! I gotta do something about dinner! Where’d the time go? This is closely followed by some frantic scrambling. And then, later, around 10 PM when I’m trying to convince myself that it’s time to go to sleep if I want to be able to wake up without too much pain in the morning – before lunchtime, that is – the sun is still up, taunting me. The upside? The evenings feel like they have much more possibility to them – the light sticks around longer, so you feel like there’s more you can go out and do. That and it’s a lot warmer – I find cold to be a pretty significant deterrent for leaving the comfort of inside…..

Day Eight: Saturday. My last real day in Paris. Sigh. I had to take an RER train to get there. I was really hoping that the RER trains would be larger and more comfortable than the metro trains – unlike the metro, where trips are pretty brief and standing the whole way is not that big a deal, the trip to Versailles was expected to take about 30 minutes from the Champs-de-Mars station in Paris. I grabbed a honey crepe from a takeaway stand – lemon and sugar is better – and munched it on the platform, nervously awaiting the train, trying not to think about the man I’d seen relieving himself by the wall in the corridor connecting the Bir-Hakeim metro station to the Champs-de-Mars RER station. By the way, if you’re ever walking around in Paris, you most definitely want to avoid stepping in random puddles if it hasn’t been raining. Those puddles aren’t water, and they were left there either by dogs (ew) or by people (EW!).

I wasn’t disappointed. RER trains are huge – they’re double decker trains! The car I climbed aboard was on the full side up top, so I rode out on the bottom level. The seat was comfortable, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the train was very smooth and quiet – unlike the screechy, rocky metro train. The ride was also nearly completely above ground, so I got to watch the scenery go by, as we left super-urban Paris with its walkup apartment buildings, and see buildings that looked more like houses, but still might have been multi-family dwellings, and real gardens too.
