These plugs will stay in place for about three months, slowly dissolving away as time marches on. When the numbing drops wore off, I could feel a slight scratchy pokey sensation in the inner corner of my right eye, but it’s more intermittent now. I can see a little blue dot in my left lower eyelid - that’s the plugs. Not too sure why I can’t see it in my right eye, though. I guess it worked its way further down into the duct. Maybe that explains the scratchy feeling.

Worse news - next time I go in, they’re going to do a scary sounding test to evaluate my tear production. It involves inserting strips under my eyelids (!!!!!) while my eyes are numbed (more blinky blinking). Gah. I’m not looking forward to that! So my hair is just left to air dry, and do its lazy curly thing. In theory, that should be better for my hair. I thought about it on my way home though, and something clicked into place - before I blow dry and straighten my hair, I put some protective serum in it. I don’t do this when letting my hair air dry. Previously, I had been putting some curl enhancing mousse in, though I’ve been skipping that for nearly a month now, and I’m still getting decent curlage, but the bottle makes no promises to protect hair from damage. It seems, then, that the process I had thought would be harder on my hair - heat styling - turns out to be better for my hair. Weird. Maybe I should try putting the serum in all the time. That might help.

Now my eye needs to heal. Given how bad the dryness is, she advised me to use the super thick drops I’ve been using at night all day, in both eyes. This makes working pretty much impossible - I can’t see enough to read well, and I’m supposed to try to put these drops in pretty consistently, so I really only get about a half hour of good clear vision before I should start thinking about putting more drops in.

I’m back to see the doctor again on Friday. Here’s hoping for fantastic improvement before then. Why can’t my eyes just behave????

Now, I’m a pretty easy going person - I didn’t get upset by the lateness of the food. That being said, I strongly suspect that others did - I saw the bride and groom’s bosses pacing about antsily, looking a bit tense, and the bride’s grandfather was pretty cranky looking. Of course, he’s used to having his dinner at 5 PM, and going to bed at about 9:30 PM, so this delay was really throwing off his rhythm. Anyways, because I’ve been on vacation, I’ve sort of lost track of the date. Sometimes, I marvel a little at how quickly I’ve forgotten what exactly the world looked like through my uncorrected eyes. I’d be pretty hard pressed to describe the grubby window through which I once viewed the world without a second thought. There are still moments where my vision isn’t clear - when I’ve been distracted away from instilling eyedrops for too long, or when my eyes get irritated by cigarette smoke, or blasting air conditioning - I think super oxygenated air might also be an irritant culprit. But the blur of dryness and irritation is not equivalent to the blur of my previously myopic eyes.

I have an eye appointment on Monday - just to check in and make sure everything is okay, though I strongly suspect that dryness is still an issue, but hopefully it’s better than it was, at least it seems better than it was - and I’m expecting to hear some instructions in terms of long term dryness management, and another follow up appointment will be scheduled after an interval of about three months, I think. Here’s hoping for good things.

Even though it’s been over a month now since I’ve had to fish a lens out of my eye, and I’m now very accustomed to being able to focus properly all the time, I still have to remind myself at night that I don’t need to remove my contact lenses. I never get very far into the act of removal - just as I’m washing my hands, I’ll look at myself in the mirror, and remember that I don’t need to take my contacts out, and a fresh wave of happiness will wash over me, and I’ll do a little happy wiggle as I rinse my hands. I hope that never goes away. I’m afraid that if it does, I might actually attempt to remove a lens from my bare cornea, and that would be extremely painful, never mind absolutely disgusting.
