And for those things that can’t be undone, no matter how you try? Well, there’s no point fixating on them. Just figure out where to go from here. Keep moving forward.

I had been hoping to finish off a massive, dragging-on-longer-than-it-should project by tomorrow. As it turns out, I needed the collaboration of other people on this more than I was expecting, so the thing is not done, and no amount of my effort would have gotten it done by my deadline, since my plan never factored in time for those other people to get their input in. Whoops.

Anyway. I’m disappointed, but I will not cease to exist as of 4:30 PM tomorrow, so I have to figure out what comes next. I have to keep moving forward.

That’s not to say that my plan at this point involves ice cream tomorrow. Laura Secord’s French & Frosted Mint should help me keep moving forward.

Oh, and even though I don’t have an iPhone 4 yet, and probably won’t for a while since they are all sold out, I still went ahead and ordered a protective skin for it when I eventually do get my hands on one. I went to ZAGG and put together one of their custom skins. I’ve got one of their plain transparent ones on my current iPhone, and it’s held up quite well to two years of use – there’s a spot on one side where the adhesive has failed, and there are a couple of smaller pieces that I’ve peeled off because the adhesive was failing, but the main bits are still well stuck on.

Anyhoo, I made a custom skin. What did I do?

I stuck a Pikachu on it. I will have a PikaPhone.

This strikes me as a fantastic idea right now. What worries me is that the reason I think this is so great is because I’m sort of wigging out over work. My concern is that once I am past this work hurdle, the notion of a PikaPhone will make me want to hide from society. Well, hide from public encounters, at any rate.

I’ll still be able to talk and text from my PikaPhone. Unlimited evenings and weekends, y’know?

I have never ever won a lottery.

Now, to be perfectly honest, I don’t really play the lottery – I think I’ve bought maybe two cash lottery tickets in my lifetime, and I’ve purchased entries for other draws perhaps a handful of times. Knowing how poor the odds are doesn’t exactly encourage someone like me – you know, cheap budget-conscious – to part with my money in that sort of fashion. It really doesn’t sit well with the part of me that insists that if I must part with funds, I had darn well better get some tangible product or service in return.

I am, however, more likely to consider buying raffle tickets when they are part of fundraisers for charity, and when this happens, I always allow myself to daydream about how my life would be changed if I did win that fantabulous grand prize. Like the brand new fully furnished luxuriously appointed home. Or the brand new luxury car. Or the exotic vacation. Or the scads of cash. Even though I know it is highly unlikely that I will win squat all, I still picture myself winning it all.

I think there are two appropriate terms for this. One is hopeful. The other is delusional. Perhaps obviously, I like the former a whole lot more.

Anyways, I’ve been watching someone else play Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune on the PS3 recently. It’s a pretty fun game to be spectator to – but then again, I like being a video game spectator. Not that my help is necessary, but I think it’s generally appreciated – I’ve never been told to stop. Plus I get the fun of playing the game without any of the button-mashing related stress associated with playing – I never have to worry about accidentally hitting the wrong button, or not moving the joystick fast enough to aim at the right guy in time.

At any rate, most of the game is about hunting for treasure, sort of. You’re trying to track your way through an abandoned city, the main storyline involves several individuals all looking for El Dorado, and along the way you need to keep your eyes peeled for lesser treasures – little trinkets that glimmer in the sun to catch your attention. Collecting these earns you side trophies in the game.

All this treasure hunting got me wondering how good at it I’d be in real life. I like puzzles. I like the idea of secret passageways and vaults, and following a trail of clues that need to be deciphered using whatever cleverness and wits I possess.

At the end of the day, though, I think I’d probably be a pretty big failure as a treasure hunter, because I wouldn’t actually have the guts to go out looking for it. These hidden tombs and chambers are all creepy, creepy places, full of harmless but still frightening creepy crawlies at best, and foul-smelling mystery substances and not-so-harmless creepy crawlies at worst. You get dirty and smelly, plus there’s the element of risk in scrabbling about over ancient structures that predate even the shakiest set of building codes. You need to be sharp, with fantastic reflexes, so you don’t get caught in ancient booby traps. I’d probably end up dead pretty fast – either death by booby trap, death by fall in unseen crevasse, death by fall from unsafe bridge, or death by fright upon being greeted by something icky.

The idea of ancient artifacts and exotic locales is appealing. But I’d far prefer that everything be cleaned and de-dangered before I start traipsing through. Maybe camera friendly, with flush toilets…

Then one day, many, many moons later, I was about to dig into a bowl of reheated leftover white rice for my lunch, when I remembered the butter-salt-pepper thing. Feeling adventurous, I decided it would be worth giving it a whirl. So I buttered up my rice, then ground some black pepper over top. I skipped the salt.

And? It was tasty. I still like plain white rice. But this variation is good too. Especially when lunch is just a bowl of white rice.

So I did some laundry today. I actually got all my socks washed. Now my sock drawer is full of clean socks with no holes that fit the way I like them to.

Now watch, we’ll be hit with a weirdo heat wave, and I’ll want to wear sandals tomorrow….
