I am, but not in any sort of real celebratory way. I don’t have a costume, because I suspect it wouldn’t go over too well for me to show up for work in a costume, and I have an appointment tomorrow that might be a bit awkward in costume.

Never mind the fact that I’m simply stumped when it comes to costume ideas. I don’t know what I’d want to be given the opportunity to dress up. When I was a young child, I sort of had no choice. When I was five, my mother asked me what I wanted to be for Halloween, I said I wanted to be a princess. She dutifully crafted a pink princess gown, hat with veil, and magic wand for me. Not sure why there was a wand - probably I asked for it, not that I thought princesses were automatically magical. Maybe I wanted to be a magical princess? Anyway, I loved that costume. The dress itself was pretty simple - just a plain pink cotton blend fabric in a basic shape with long wide sleeves. The thing that got me going was the fact that the dress went down to my feet - no other item of clothing I had did. That and my mother took the trouble to sew little star shaped sequins on it in a scattered pattern around the neckline. I think my little five year old brain might have actually thought those were really magical.

Because I loved that costume so much, I used to use the hat to play games too, and after awhile the veil started to get a bit worn and ratty - I guess I wasn’t too gentle with it. So the next year I needed a new costume, unless I wanted to be the ratty princess. I didn’t want to be a princess anymore anyway - that was too babyish. I decided I wanted to be a bunny. So my mother dutifully made me a bunny costume. This was much more work - now there were legs, and mitts, and a large yarn pompom for the tail. And the hat. That hat. My mother couldn’t figure a way to get those bunny ears to stand up straight - she made them as stiff as she could, but the point where they attached to the hat was too flexible, so they always flopped. After realizing she couldn’t make them stand up, she simply told me, “You can be a flop-eared bunny.”

I hated that costume. I’d put the hat on, the ears would flop back, and no one knew what I was supposed to be. My negative feelings about the costume were further compounded by the fact that I was forced to use it four years in a row. My mother, thinking ahead, made the costume in such a way that it would accommodate some growth - it was big and baggy, and she made the sleeves and legs a bit long, so if I grew a bit, it was no problem. I grew into it, and it still worked as I started to grow out of it. When I started talking about costume ideas, she’d remind me that I had a bunny costume that still fit, and that she’d worked hard to make it for me. And I’d go along with it and be a bunny that no one could figure was a bunny again.

When the time came that I actually needed a new costume, I blanked. In a panic, I cobbled together bits of odds and ends, but with no real goal in mind. At school, someone asked me what I was supposed to be. I looked down at the mishmash I was wearing, and realized I didn’t know how to answer that. There was no answer. I was just not wearing normal clothes.

Good thing no one will let me trick or treat anymore - otherwise I’d be having some real panic right about now!!!!!

Unless I encounter some problem, I no longer have to return to see the eye doctors at the clinic that performed my vision correction. The dryness issue has improved a lot, and the doctor I saw today figures that though I will likely still need artificial tears periodically, it’s no longer a concern, and I can stop with the anti-allergy drops I’ve been using for the past month. She also watched me carefully during my appointment and confirmed that I don’t close my eyes all the way when I blink - how freaky. Still, I now see 20/20 or better in both eyes, so I would conclude that my vision correction was a complete success.

It is true that I did not have dinner until 9:30 PM. It is not, however, because I was playing Rock Band 2 for nearly five straight hours. I had to do other things unrelated to feeding my video game addiction last night. Clearly, I am not so dependent that I just can’t tear myself away to do other things.

I didn’t play too much today either. I played a little, sure, it was calling me all day. I did other things too though. I worked. I did some laundry. I hauled away some recycling.

That being said, I am starting to wonder if it’s even in the realm of possible for me to have a hairdo like the one I picked for my new character. The more I see it, the more I like it. I’m contemplating the notion of taking a few pictures of it to show my stylist when I go for my next haircut, which will probably be happening within the next month - my bangs are starting to look less like sideswept bangs and more like stupid-drive-me-bonkers bangs. I don’t even know if the cut would be right for the shape of my head. I might just be in that phase where everything about the game is amazing and wonderful and I kind of want to live it.

Let’s not consider what it says about me when I want to become a video game character. This has nothing to do with ‘Shi’… Let’s just all agree that Rock Band 2 is super fun.

It would appear that winter is indeed coming. The days are getting shorter - it’s no longer bright when I wake up, and the sun is setting pretty quickly in the evenings. It’s also getting colder - in the morning, the task of getting out of bed has become exponentially more difficult because in bed is now so much warmer and cozier than the world outside of bed. I’m getting reacquainted with my long sleeved shirts and even some sweaters, and my short sleeved shirts aren’t seeing much usage anymore. Yes, summer has passed.

So perhaps not surprisingly, I am having very positive thoughts about escaping the winter doldrums to go somewhere sunny and warm for a vacation. A number of candidates have come to mind. I could go back to Las Vegas. I could go to Cuba. I could go to Cancún.

Alternately, I could embrace the glory of winter in Canada and run away to an undiscovered-by-me ski resort in the Rockies, and pretend I’m a ski bunny. This is also very appealing. In fact, at the moment, since it’s not yet miserably cold and wintery, this option seems to offer equal enjoyment levels to the sunny escape options.

I’ll have to have a peek at my budget for the remainder of the year and see what sorts of travel deals are available. Sadly, financial issues may have the deciding vote on my vacation plans - no matter how fervently I wish, I can’t seem to find a way to wake up and find never ending coffers of money under my bed. There’s some trick involved here that I have yet to figure out….

And the exchange rate isn’t helping…

Anyways, a while back I bought a Magic Bullet at Costco. It was on sale…

I’ve been using it somewhat regularly since, and I quite like it. If I want to have a smoothie, I can make individual sized smoothies, so I don’t have to commit to having 2 L of smoothie to work through.

That being said, it’s not perfect. I’m having a hard time with the ice in the smoothies. I can’t seem to get the ice cubes to blend away. Today, I tried to blend just the banana and the ice cubes, thinking that perhaps they were too floaty with the orange juice in there, and thus never got down to where the blades whirl around doing their pulverizing thing. Taking the juice out of the equation didn’t help in the least. It seemed that the blades were actually whirling around too quickly, so instead of crushing the ice, the cubes just bounced around just above the blades.

I’m not sure how to fix this. The first couple of times I used the Magic Bullet, this wasn’t an issue at all, but it seems to have gotten progressively worse. Very strange.

That being said, giving up the Magic Bullet is not an option. I’m now hooked on my smoothies. Try to take them away and I will hurt you!

I haven’t had that particular issue, but it’s nice to not have to worry about that sort of thing. I knew what it was from the shipping label, and sure enough, when I opened it and waded through all the packaging, there was my shiny new adapter, complete with the little green dot to indicate that it’s not one of the defective ones. Good thing, too - my iPhone ended up needing to be charged last night, so I swapped out the adapters to do it. The old defective one is now sitting on my kitchen table, next to the box that will serve as the vessel in which this will be returned, at no expense to me, because, you know, the original was defective.

I do find it a bit strange that they sent the thing in such a large box, though. Seriously, the adapter is small enough to fit inside my clenched fist (and I don’t have a very big fist!), but the box is big enough to comfortably hold, oh, about ten Mars Bars. The adapter itself was nestled in between three layers of foam - two for vertical cushioning, one with a square cut out of the middle of it to control lateral movement. Did the box really need to be this big? Aren’t smaller boxes cheaper to ship? Not that it affects me any, I’m not paying for any of this. It just all seems so inefficient though.

Not that I can claim to be the queen of efficiency. Instead of working away like a good girl for the past few minutes, I’ve been procrastinating by typing this up. No more, though - now to get back to a little more late night work!

Indeed, they were the right size and shape, came in boxes of three, and had big promises of energy cost savings printed on the label.

Now, they were more expensive too - it works out to a little over $5 per bulb, as opposed to just under $3 for a regular incandescent bulb. But these ones also promise to last for roughly 9 years. 9 years seems like a good long stretch of time before I have to reeeeeeeeeach way up there to replace another bulb.

I put the incandescent ones back on the shelf, and picked up a 3-pack of the fluorescent ones. I’m not saying whether it was the promise of decreased environmental footprint or the promise of decreased frequency of replacement that prompted me to spend the extra money for the new bulbs. Let’s just call it a win-win situation….
