For the first time, though, I’m feeling weirdly tired before the big push. As if the knowledge of the upcoming long hours and possibly late night hauls is weighing on me.

I mean, I got plenty of sleep last night, slept in rather blissfully this morning, I worked a few hours on the project today, and I am feeling rather zonked. I’ve been awake less than fourteen hours, and I want to go to bed. So rather than try to stay up and push through a bit more tonight, I’m just going to give in.

Tomorrow will be better. Right?

I’ve considered purchasing a biometric lock for my front door off and on for a while now – the sort where you program the thing to recognize your fingerprint, so rather than carry around a key, all you need to do is scan your finger whenever you want to unlock the door. Very spiffy sounding.

The only hiccup is, I often have some trouble with fingerprint scanners. They seem to not like me much. I suspect the problem is that the pads of my fingers are sort of smooth, so that the grooves of my prints are rather shallow, which means that when one of these scanning devices goes to capture an image, it gets a rather smudgy grubby one, which makes recognizing that print again later a bit of a crap shoot. I’d hate to be trapped outside my home one day, trying endlessly to get the door to grant me entrance by repeatedly swiping my finger, only to be rudely denied time after time, sobbing in frustration while the neighbours edge past me, hoping to avoid being noticed.

Maybe carrying a key isn’t such a bad thing after all.

I always worry about losing my key somewhere, and that worry would simply go away if I got the biometric lock. Of course, I was sharing this possibility with my father one day, and he snorted and said, Sure, but then if a thief wants into your place, he doesn’t need to find a key, he just needs to chop off your finger!

Especially since, once you get home again, those things that seemed so elegant and refined suddenly start looking garish and tacky.

For now? I’m going to sleep on it……

Their fancy ones are good too, but there is something wonderful about those simple signature donuts that really hits the donut spot. Unfortunately, Krispy Kreme locations are not exactly abundant in this country, so going to fetch some can be quite a trek, and often is ruled out for reasons of practicality. So most of my donut runs are either to Tim Horton’s, which is still good, just not Krispy Kreme, or sometimes I just the local grocery store.

The local grocery store donuts tend to be a bit more hit or miss. Sometimes they’re dry. Sometimes, they’re not sweet enough. Usually I’m left with a sad recognition that these are nowhere near Krispy Kreme donuts.

A few years ago, I was apartment hunting, and I viewed a place that was across the street from a Dunkin’ Donuts. I didn’t rent that apartment, but I wonder how my life would have run differently if I had.

I sort of wonder if my dress size would have changed….

So there I sat, with a blurky large Diet Coke, and two options – drink it or pitch it. It only cost me a dollar, so it totally wasn’t worth getting back in the car and driving back there to complain and get the pop that I actually wanted. I settled on drinking it anyway. After all, I did spend an whole dollar on it, so I was going to drink my pop, darnitall!

As it turned out, this was a mistake. As I reached the two-thirds mark on the drink, I began to feel some uneasiness in my tummy. The uneasiness developed into an uncomfortably sore tummy that lasted for about an hour. It would seem that my body does not like aspartame, or one of the other interesting compounds they use to make a sweetened beverage that miraculously does not contain calories.

Now I know better. Avoid diet pop. Always. Full stop.

Today I leveled up to level 10. I unlocked the Zyborg, and surprise surprise, it’s another blue zombie that I cannot plant.

But an interesting thing happened when I hit level 10. The game played me a little animation. First, it acknowledged that I seem to be enjoying the game, which is true. It then went on to implore that I purchase that Blue Headstone to continue enjoying the game. It reminded me that the game had been provided for free, and that this purchase would be a little nod of encouragement to the game’s developers. It then went on to tell me that purchasing the Blue Headstone would not only allow me to grow blue zombies, but it would also later unlock the Red Headstone for purchase with a brain, which would in turn allow me to grow red zombies at higher levels. All this fun could be mine for one measly US dollar.

Now, I’ve been thinking about this. They’re right, it’s just a dollar, and there are no ads in the game, so it’s really the only bit of revenue I’d be sending the developers’ way, and part of me feels that I should support them since I’m enjoying the fruits of their efforts.

Then again, another part of me is feeling rather blackmailed by this – it looks like the game is forcing me to buy the Blue Headstone in order to continue progressing, when the initial offering was a free game. It’s not truly a free game, it’s free until you hit a certain point, after which you must pay in order to proceed. And then keep paying.

But they only want a dollar.

But a free game should be a free game.

I still don’t know if I’m going to be parting with that dollar or not.

I am, however, more likely to consider buying raffle tickets when they are part of fundraisers for charity, and when this happens, I always allow myself to daydream about how my life would be changed if I did win that fantabulous grand prize. Like the brand new fully furnished luxuriously appointed home. Or the brand new luxury car. Or the exotic vacation. Or the scads of cash. Even though I know it is highly unlikely that I will win squat all, I still picture myself winning it all.
