I’ve been sort of aware that I do not drink enough liquid throughout the course of a day for a while now. I just don’t feel thirsty very often. And I know that feeling thirsty is actually a sign of dehydration, not just water reserves running on the low side, but then again, I don’t get thirsty very often, so I sort of just cruised along feeling fine.

More recently, though – last night, to be precise – I’ve been challenged to significantly increase and improve my water intake. The challenge is to increase my water intake to the normal recommended level – 8 glasses of water per day, roughly 4 litres. And by water, I mean liquid – it could be juice. Pop only counts if I’ve had 1.5 litres of something healthier first – so this attempt to drink more will not just turn into a sugary Coke binge that makes my teeth fall out and my pancreas swell with overactivity.

Today was really the first day of me trying to meet this challenge, and in actuality I had sort of forgotten about it when I first woke up and went to work. At work, I was presented with a lovely hot chocolate from Tim Horton’s, and at that point, I remembered the challenge. So after I finished my hot chocolate, I snatched an empty 591 mL Coke bottle off my desk and went and filled it with filtered water from the special tap in the staff lunch room. I sipped from that bottle throughout the morning and early afternoon – by 2:30 PM, it was all gone. I considered going to refill it, but decided against it, since I was planning on leaving the office at 3:30 PM.

When I got home, the challenge was again forgotten, and I slipped into my usual habit of putzing about in front of the computer, decompressing from the day, without a drink beside me. Right before dinner, I remembered, and filled a 1 L Nalgene bottle with water from the sink. I forced myself to drink the whole thing within an hour. I sipped a bit of Coke with my dinner – maybe 250 mL?

If I were to venture a guess, I’d say I had a little over 2 L today. Halfway to the daily goal of 4 L….

Try try again tomorrow, I suppose. If I stop swishing while I walk…

I think, though, that some other work-related concerns were keeping me from truly enjoying anything, and now that I’ve passed a hurdle I’d agreed to having set up for me on March 5, I’m a bit more relaxed about work stuff. Perhaps more relaxed than I should be, but in more recent days I find myself getting less distracted as I try to read.

For a few days, I’d been reading a few pages of Stephen Fry’s Stephen Fry in America, which is an entertaining trip through the US, with brief stops in each state – one chapter for each state, covering a day or two’s activities. I’m enjoying the narrative, but last night I thought it might be time to give real fiction a go again. With a little help, I got some additional ebooks loaded onto the Nook, and loaded up Douglas Coupland’s All Families are Psychotic.

Now, I’ve read JPod, and The Gum Thief, and I enjoyed both of them – JPod more so – so I had relatively high expectations. I am happy to report that so far, All Families are Psychotic does not disappoint. The first page sucked me right in, and I’m really enjoying my cruise along the story of this dysfunctional family.

Ah, fiction. I’m glad to see you again….

Okay guys, it’s been a while since I’ve posted a gallery from here… They have a unique shooting style. Sort of a fisheye lense, coupled with direct lighting, and then a bit of photoshop smoothing. I have been away from the parental nest for quite some time now, yet I am nowhere near an accomplished cook. I rely on takeout and prepackaged food far too much, and for reasons unknown, any time I have to expend some preparatory effort to get food on my plate it counts in my brain as a home-cooked meal, even when no actual cooking takes place. Sandwiches, for example. There’s totally no cooking involved in a sandwich, but if I make myself sandwiches for dinner I still think it counts as a home-cooked meal, and should not be counted as takeout. I also have it set in my head that home-cooked meals are automatically healthier and better for me than takeout.

Tonight’s dinner? Seasoned salmon fillet, from a frozen preprepared box, baked in the oven, with homemade french fries and a little salad composed of baby spinach and sliced fresh strawberries in raspberry vinaigrette. A fairly vocal portion of my brain insists that this is a home-cooked meal, and that it is therefore wholesome and healthy. The reality is that the salmon came out of a box, so really it wasn’t a home-cooked meal, and the potatoes were deep fried, so really it wasn’t healthy.

It was all very tasty though. I still don’t think it counts as takeout….

And yes, it does fit my gargantuan wallet – I checked before I bought it. And yes, that means I was doing a bit of a suspicious looking manipulating in the store – pulling the stuffing out of the display bag, pulling my wallet out of my handbag, slipping the wallet into the display bag, then pulling it out again and tucking it back into my handbag. Rather shifty looking. Still, I don’t think any of the clerks noticed – there were two or three other women in the store trying on shoes. Sandal type shoes. In their bare feet. Ick. Mental note – buy all my sandals online from now on. You never know what’s on the bottom of someone else’s foot when they jam it into that shoe that might become yours. Blurk.

I’ve been buying some juice from Costco lately – they sell these packets with two 2 L cartons of Oasis Health Break Antioxia juice. It’s good stuff.

But…

Well, I drink it diluted – I’ll put four ice cubes in my glass, then fill to about the halfway point with water, then top off with the juice. I suppose it’s about half and half, really. But I don’t drink this stuff straight.

Why?

Because it’s really strong. I mean, really strong. The carton has a little promotional nutritional blurb on it, and it tells you that 250 mL of this stuff is the equivalent of two servings of fruit according to Canada’s Food Guide. And that 250 mL also packs an impressive quantity of polyphenols – though apparently, not that impressive, because the number isn’t showing up in my head right now. Well. The number is, it’s 400, but I don’t know what unit of measurement is supposed to go with that number, and I’m too lazy to just get up off the couch and go take a peek in the fridge to find out.

So I figure when I’m diluting this stuff, I’m really getting about 125 mL into my glass. So that glass is one serving of fruit, with 200 insert-unit-here of polyphenols. That’s still good, right?

I presume so. It’s not changing in any event – the juice is too powerful to drink straight. Almost a bit bitter at times. The diluting also makes the drink more affordable. Healthy stuff ain’t cheap, it would seem…

Last year, I did a bit of a frantic scramble when the RRSP contribution deadline rolled around. Then, I logged into my online banking system, and realized that because I had made a change to my account during the year, I would have to phone in and speak to a representative. On the last day where RRSP contributions for the 2008 tax year could be made.

Well. It got done. I sat on hold for a very, very long time, and you might remember my frustration upon realizing that my cordless phone’s battery had died – the hold music had been cutting in and out, and I put the line on speaker phone so I could do other things while I waited, and thus didn’t notice when the line just went completely dead. In any event, eventually it was all done, and I breathed a sigh of relief, followed by a solemn promise to myself – I would not go through this again. For the 2009 tax year, I would sort out my contributions early, and get them done early.

How’s that working out, you might ask?

Well.

Today is February 25.

I have yet to make my 2009 year’s contributions.

Everything’s all set up now – I should be able to do it all online, quickly and painlessly, right???

Saturday afternoon, I read a complete novel. A shortish novel, but a novel nonetheless. It was hardly riveting, and yet I could not put it down. Just kept flipping those epages, one after the other, until there were no more.

Saturday night, I started another book, just before going to sleep. I started Twenties Girl, by Sophie Kinsella. Yes, I like Sophie Kinsella – the storylines at points are almost too girly for my tastes, but I really enjoy the narrative style, and she throws in enough funny stuff that I can tolerate the bits of sappy mushiness, as they’re pretty short-lived and well spaced, and even when a character is being an absolute idiot, I don’t get so frustrated that I simply can’t stand to read another word. I read more of it on Sunday, not in one big session like I had the day before with Finger Lickin’ Fifteen, but I spent a fair amount of time on it, probably. I got roughly halfway through, but then again, it appears to be roughly double the length of the book I read Saturday, so I suppose really I was keeping the same pace.

Today I had to return my thoughts to work, which means no fiction reading, though I’ll likely sneak some in before drifting off to dreamland. It’s funny – I didn’t touch any fiction reading for so long, and then I get a wee taste of it and I’m suddenly hooked, craving the next fix.

I have this impression, though, that when I read Sophie Kinsella, some Briticisms sneak into my writing. It doesn’t happen with other authors – or is it subtle enough that I simply don’t notice? Can anyone reading this tell that I’ve been reading a lot of British writing in the past twenty-four hours? Did the writing get subtly more American in the twenty-four hours previous to that? (Janet Evanovich is American.) I find I really notice it after reading Sophie Kinsella. Suddenly things are brilliant. I must admit, I’m thankful that I don’t start tossing fab around – that one seems a bit much.

Of course, maybe it’s just all in my head, and I always just write like me.

Anyways, the futility of planning…

I went for a haircut yesterday. Which means that I have recently known the bliss of having someone manipulate my hair around, I felt the joy of the new swing of newly shortened hair, and today I’m eyeballing myself in all reflective surfaces wondering if it’s shorter than last time (probably not) and if I’ve made a huge mistake (also doubtful).

I was actually planning on holding off on this haircut until mid March or so, but my stylist is 7 months pregnant, and late stage pregnancy can be unpredictable, so I thought I’d better play it safe and get the cut sooner rather than later. Given that she will likely have the baby in April at some point, I figured it would be a while before my next cut – she mentioned wanting to keep up part time work and not take too much time off, but I figured I shouldn’t count on her being available for several months.

So I sat down and had a think. This shorter do tends to get shaggy looking as it grows out, but during the summer months I tend to not have any contract work, which means pigtails and ponytails are totally an option for dealing with unruly hair. A plan formed – I could just let my hair grow over the summer, and in mid to late August I could see about getting a cut before starting up with real work again in the fall. Plus, this had the added benefit of shifting my haircut schedule around a bit – instead of wanting a cut in November, I won’t want another one until late December or early January, and then the next one will want to come in late April or so. This seemed like a good plan.

Turns out, though, that she’s only taking 6 weeks off after she has the baby, and then she plans to return to the part time schedule. So getting a haircut in late June or early July would have been completely doable.

Oh well. We’ll see how it goes. I may try to hold off till August anyway….

Still, I always hit this point on Saturday night when I realize that the next day is Sunday, which is the last day of my weekend, and a small claw of icy fear grips my tummy. I worry that I have squandered my down time, not made the most of what I have been given, wasted the precious hours I could have transformed into the most fun ever.

Really, though, it’s all about giving myself a rest, a reboot, a refresh, right?

Well. Nothing wrong with wanting a bit of a longer rest, there.
