I rely on takeout and prepackaged food far too much, and for reasons unknown, any time I have to expend some preparatory effort to get food on my plate it counts in my brain as a home-cooked meal, even when no actual cooking takes place. Sandwiches, for example. There’s totally no cooking involved in a sandwich, but if I make myself sandwiches for dinner I still think it counts as a home-cooked meal, and should not be counted as takeout. I also have it set in my head that home-cooked meals are automatically healthier and better for me than takeout.

Tonight’s dinner? Seasoned salmon fillet, from a frozen preprepared box, baked in the oven, with homemade french fries and a little salad composed of baby spinach and sliced fresh strawberries in raspberry vinaigrette. A fairly vocal portion of my brain insists that this is a home-cooked meal, and that it is therefore wholesome and healthy. The reality is that the salmon came out of a box, so really it wasn’t a home-cooked meal, and the potatoes were deep fried, so really it wasn’t healthy.

It was all very tasty though. I still don’t think it counts as takeout….

I’ve been buying some juice from Costco lately – they sell these packets with two 2 L cartons of Oasis Health Break Antioxia juice. Why?

Because it’s really strong. I mean, really strong. The carton has a little promotional nutritional blurb on it, and it tells you that 250 mL of this stuff is the equivalent of two servings of fruit according to Canada’s Food Guide. And that 250 mL also packs an impressive quantity of polyphenols – though apparently, not that impressive, because the number isn’t showing up in my head right now. Well. The number is, it’s 400, but I don’t know what unit of measurement is supposed to go with that number, and I’m too lazy to just get up off the couch and go take a peek in the fridge to find out.

So I figure when I’m diluting this stuff, I’m really getting about 125 mL into my glass. So that glass is one serving of fruit, with 200 insert-unit-here of polyphenols. That’s still good, right?

I presume so. It’s not changing in any event – the juice is too powerful to drink straight. Almost a bit bitter at times. The diluting also makes the drink more affordable. Healthy stuff ain’t cheap, it would seem…

Last year, I did a bit of a frantic scramble when the RRSP contribution deadline rolled around. On the last day where RRSP contributions for the 2008 tax year could be made.

Well. It got done. I sat on hold for a very, very long time, and you might remember my frustration upon realizing that my cordless phone’s battery had died – the hold music had been cutting in and out, and I put the line on speaker phone so I could do other things while I waited, and thus didn’t notice when the line just went completely dead. In any event, eventually it was all done, and I breathed a sigh of relief, followed by a solemn promise to myself – I would not go through this again. For the 2009 tax year, I would sort out my contributions early, and get them done early.

How’s that working out, you might ask?

Well.

Today is February 25.

I have yet to make my 2009 year’s contributions.

Everything’s all set up now – I should be able to do it all online, quickly and painlessly, right???

I’ve had my Nook for precisely three full days.

Saturday afternoon, I read a complete novel. A shortish novel, but a novel nonetheless. It was hardly riveting, and yet I could not put it down. Just kept flipping those epages, one after the other, until there were no more.

Saturday night, I started another book, just before going to sleep. I started Twenties Girl, by Sophie Kinsella. Yes, I like Sophie Kinsella – the storylines at points are almost too girly for my tastes, but I really enjoy the narrative style, and she throws in enough funny stuff that I can tolerate the bits of sappy mushiness, as they’re pretty short-lived and well spaced, and even when a character is being an absolute idiot, I don’t get so frustrated that I simply can’t stand to read another word. I read more of it on Sunday, not in one big session like I had the day before with Finger Lickin’ Fifteen, but I spent a fair amount of time on it, probably. I got roughly halfway through, but then again, it appears to be roughly double the length of the book I read Saturday, so I suppose really I was keeping the same pace.

Today I had to return my thoughts to work, which means no fiction reading, though I’ll likely sneak some in before drifting off to dreamland. It’s funny – I didn’t touch any fiction reading for so long, and then I get a wee taste of it and I’m suddenly hooked, craving the next fix.

I have this impression, though, that when I read Sophie Kinsella, some Briticisms sneak into my writing. It doesn’t happen with other authors – or is it subtle enough that I simply don’t notice? Can anyone reading this tell that I’ve been reading a lot of British writing in the past twenty-four hours? Did the writing get subtly more American in the twenty-four hours previous to that? (Janet Evanovich is American.) I find I really notice it after reading Sophie Kinsella. Suddenly things are brilliant. I must admit, I’m thankful that I don’t start tossing fab around – that one seems a bit much.

Of course, maybe it’s just all in my head, and I always just write like me.

Anyways, the futility of planning…

I went for a haircut yesterday. I was actually planning on holding off on this haircut until mid March or so, but my stylist is 7 months pregnant, and late stage pregnancy can be unpredictable, so I thought I’d better play it safe and get the cut sooner rather than later. Given that she will likely have the baby in April at some point, I figured it would be a while before my next cut – she mentioned wanting to keep up part time work and not take too much time off, but I figured I shouldn’t count on her being available for several months.

So I sat down and had a think. This shorter do tends to get shaggy looking as it grows out, but during the summer months I tend to not have any contract work, which means pigtails and ponytails are totally an option for dealing with unruly hair. A plan formed – I could just let my hair grow over the summer, and in mid to late August I could see about getting a cut before starting up with real work again in the fall. Plus, this had the added benefit of shifting my haircut schedule around a bit – instead of wanting a cut in November, I won’t want another one until late December or early January, and then the next one will want to come in late April or so. This seemed like a good plan.

Turns out, though, that she’s only taking 6 weeks off after she has the baby, and then she plans to return to the part time schedule. So getting a haircut in late June or early July would have been completely doable.

Oh well. We’ll see how it goes. I may try to hold off till August anyway….

I got Rock Band. Played my way through it. Even did the Endless Setlist at the end, I did!

Then I got Rock Band 2. Well. I got The Beatles Rock Band. I’ve finished the story line in that one, meaning I’ve played every song that came on the disc. I’ve even purchased some of the additional songs available in the PlayStation Store, and have developed an appreciation for Beatlemania – granted, I’m forty years late to the party. In what may be Beatle blasphemy, but is par for the course for me, I don’t think I have a favourite.

Having pretty well exhausted the playlist for The Beatles Rock Band, you’d think I’d attack what remains of Rock Band 2 with renewed zeal.

Instead, I got Lego Rock Band.

I haven’t gotten very far in it yet. So far it’s fun, like the others. The graphics are sort of overly cutesy, not in a flowers and puppies sort of way, but in an aimed at five year olds sort of way. I also get the feeling as I’m playing that I’m basically playing a giant Lego commercial – the little trivia bits are more often than not about Lego instead of about the bands providing the music, or gameplay.
