And, well, since it’s years later and now that I’ve destroyed one I’m much less likely to destroy another, due to the memory of melting plastic that haunts me still, I went ahead and got me an upgraded model.

The new Zojirushi cooks with induction heating, which they claim makes for a more even and steady cooking temperature. It also has a wider selection of cooking modes. Where the old cooker had one mode for both white and brown rice, this one has distinct cooking modes for these types.

Now, I like steamed rice. For reasons that escape me, my parents have it in their heads that I don’t like rice, so whenever I mention to them that I have eaten or will be eating rice, there’s this stunned silence followed by an incredulous, But, you don’t like rice! I can’t seem to correct them out of this pattern. True, I don’t like fried rice. But any other rice? Bring it on.

So I had bought some brown rice, just to try, and had cooked it up on a couple of occasions in the old rice cooker. It was good, and more flavourful than white rice, but it seemed rather chewy and tough. I figured that was the character of brown rice.

As it turns out, that was incorrect. When cooked properly, brown rice is amazing. As in, I may never buy white rice again.

The new Zojirushi’s brown rice mode – not to be confused with the GABA brown rice mode, which I haven’t tried yet – takes a bit longer than white rice. It takes a little over an hour for the program to run through to completion. It’s worth the extra wait, though, because the resulting rice is tender and fluffy and more flavourful than before and really just a pleasure to chow down on. The first time I did it, I noticed right away that the rice had cooked up to a softer texture than what I had seen with the old Zojirushi, and I was worried at first – I was afraid it had gotten overcooked and was now brown rice mush. Now I know – this is what it’s like when it’s done right.

As an added bonus, the new Zojirushi plays a little tune for me when the cooking starts, and another when the cooking is done. No more harsh beeps ringing out from the kitchen – instead, you get a cute little song.

Then, yesterday, a large portion of the gel nail actually broke off when I was fluffing up a beanbag chair. This has never happened before, and I wasn’t doing anything particularly hard on my nails. The new gel must be weaker. Not that I need invincible nails. But now I have a stupid broken one, and I have to go in tomorrow to get it fixed, where I would have been able to wait an additional week before needing another fill… Stupid organic products… bring on the chemicals!

Sigh. Well, it was an adventure in trying something new.

I sit in the glow of my Christmas tree, which was put up just in time for Christmas. The 22nd, if my memory serves me.

My tree is pre-lit – no fussing with strings of lights for me. Which is good, because this way I can have 1000 multicoloured lights – they don’t twinkle, they’re not particularly fancy in any way, but they are festive and they make me happy, and I don’t have to worry about tangled cords.

There aren’t very many ornaments on my tree. One of my cousins does her tree up almost as if for show – she and her husband have a little chat about what sort of colour scheme they’d like, and then she goes out and buys ribbons and crafty materials and bedecks their tree in the agreed-upon colour scheme. The end result is very pretty. I, on the other hand, prefer a more eclectic tree – I’ve been picking up a couple of ornaments every year I’ve had it, and I had picked up a few before even getting a tree, and I’ve gotten some as gifts.

I should get some stuff organized for Christmas. Cards need to be sent out soon, especially if the recipients are to receive them, you know, before Christmas. It’s a good thing I buy cards on the cheap during the summers, or right after Christmas – I know I have a little stash I can run to instead of dashing out to the mall to pay a premium price. I’ve also got some gifts that I need to get made.

The homemade cookie supply around these parts is running low. I’d better think about remedying that. Though maybe I can leave that till next week.

My brandy bean stock remains healthy, and this self-bribing motivating thing is working well. I got myself to do some chores today instead of putzing about on the computer doing non-work.

In other somewhat related news, victory is mine! I found brandy beans at my local grocery store, on sale this week! This is not indicative of any sort of obsession addiction problem – I am merely planning for the months to come. This is foresight.

Besides – I need to go back to the grocery store one more time this week anyway. I’m on the hook to bake up a batch of cookies for a potluck shindig this weekend, and I thought I still had plenty of Skor toffee bits in the pantry, but there’s only one packet, and it was all solidified into one chunk. I smashed it around a bit, and I think they’re probably okay, but still – I’d rather have a couple of backup packets on hand then find out part way through preparing the dough on Saturday afternoon that I need to make an emergency run. I find cooking and baking turn out best when I don’t have adrenaline surging through my system.

Speaking of cooking, last night I decided to try something new and hopefully healthful – stuffed bell peppers. I found a recipe, made myself a grocery list, and went to the store. The recipe called for bulgur. My grocery store, being a rather non-adventurous sort of establishment, did not have any bulgur. I did not really feel like traipsing all over looking for bulgur – I did that once for teff flour, which was a huge exercise in frustration, as I never did find teff flour. I did find teff grain, but have yet to try grinding it in my Magic Bullet to make the flour to make injera. I digress. Long story short – I was setting myself up to make something when I did not have one of the ingredients.

Solution? Substitute couscous instead. They seem to have the same cooking requirements, so I thought it might work.

The end result? Pretty tasty, if I do say so myself, but I made it, so I might be a wee bit biased. From what my cookbook told me about bulgur, I’m guessing it would have a firmer texture than the couscous did, and introduce some mildy nutty flavour into the dish. Which sounds good, and could be really tasty with a green pepper shell – I used red pepper. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for bulgur and give that variation a try.

Anyways, An untimely end…..

Last night, I had rice as part of my dinner, which means I cooked up a batch in my faithful, handy, and ever so cute Zojirushi rice cooker. I had just cleaned up a batch of pots and pans earlier in the afternoon, so I left the pan and the rice cooker on the stovetop, waiting for the next round of kitchen cleanup.

Tonight, I was reheating leftover soup from the weekend. I put the soup in a small pot, put it on the stovetop, turned on the burner, and walked away.

A short while later, I started hearing an odd popping sound. When I reheat leftover chili, I sometimes can hear a crackling sound, not sure why, so I figured the soup was making the noise, but I decided to play it safe and go investigate.

As I got closer to the stove, I detected a smell. A melting plastic smell. Oh, no.

When I got to the stove, I saw the problem. I had mentally reversed the burner controls, and had turned on the burner that was under the rice cooker, instead of the one under the soup pot. The soup was still stone cold.

Now it looks like this on the bottom, and a metal coil fell out when I picked it up off the burner, after having shut the burner off and turned on the fan to suck out as much of the toxic plastic fumes as possible. It’s totally not salvageable – I don’t even know what the metal coil that fell out is, never mind where I might try to put it back. My poor Zojirushi is going in the trash.

As for the stove? Puddles of melted plastic were where the burner is. After the burner and plastic had all cooled, I started attempting to clean the mess up. Some of the plastic came off fairly easily. Other bits were made of different plastic, and are a bit more tenacious in their grip. I’m going to have to find some implement to really scrape away with. Ugh.

The moral of the story? I mean, beyond keep me out of the kitchen.

Do not leave a lit burner unattended.

They’d round up to the nearest multiple of ten, or the nearest dollar, or whatever – in talking about prices, time, what have you – and I’d correct them with the precise measurement. It must have driven them nuts. There are times I wonder how they managed to not leave me to the wolves one night. But I digress.

Apparently, that one time I went to that one-day-only-door-crasher-line-up-outside-and-wait-your-turn-to-enter-the-store crazy blowout shoe sale, it did something to my sense of perspective when it comes to shoe pricing. $160 for a pair of shoes seems beyond ridiculous. About a month ago, I walked away from another pair of shoes I liked that the store wanted me to pay $100 for. When did I become one of those people who refuses to pay more than $60 for a pair of shoes?

Yep, I know – I’m doing the exact same rounding up thing I used to take my parents to task for years ago. Shhh. Don’t tell them – maybe they haven’t noticed.

Yesterday, as you know, I attempted to make some soup. Homemade soup, not the stuff you reheat from a can. The recipe said I’d need a 5 to 6 quart Dutch oven.

Now, maybe you are one of the fortunate ones who has a sense of what size things are. I am not one of those lucky people. Today someone was telling me about a 900 foot tower. I said, “Wow.” Then thought a bit, then asked for a comparable object to give me a sense of scale. I understand enough to know that 900 feet is tall, but how tall? Is it as tall as the average commercial highrise building? Two of them?

So the instruction line telling me to fetch a 5 to 6 quart Dutch oven was a bit mysterious.

I started rooting around in the cupboard. Fortunately for me, I bought several Anolon pots in a set, and Anolon is nice enough to stamp the bottoms of the pots with their sizes (capacities?) in both imperial and metric – handy since my cookbooks sort of come from both measurement camps. My large Dutch oven pot is an 8 quart – too big. The next largest one I had was a 3 quart – not big enough.

Then I spied my Kitchen Aid cast iron enameled Dutch oven – essentially a Le Creuset knock off, though it seems weird to refer to something made by Kitchen Aid as a knock off. It’s smaller than the 8 quart, seemed bigger than the 3 quart. I wondered, might this be the magical baby bear just right one?

I pulled it out of the cupboard, and took a peek at the bottom. Nothing. I lifted the lid and looked inside the lid, and in the pot itself. Nothing. I’m sure there was a size on the box it came in, but that box is long gone to recycled heaven.

So there I am, with this Dutch oven on my stovetop, wondering if it’s going to be big enough to make my soup. I put some of the ingredients beside it, and try to visualize whether they will completely fill or overflow the pot. I’m terrible at this sort of visualization, so I don’t keep up with this exercise for very long. I decide I’ll give it a shot.

Then I have this vision of soup bubbling over and spilling all over the stovetop, down the sides and onto the floor, and I chicken out and switch the mystery pot for the 8 quart.

Once the soup was fully assembled and simmering away, I looked into my pot, saw that there was room to spare, but also figured that I probably had more than would have fit into the mystery pot. I’m glad I made the switch. I think that mystery one might have a 3.5 quart capacity.

Oh, the adventures I have….

I know, i know.. I can probably use one pot to measure the amount in the knockoff…. ^_^
