And then I get the weird overzealous urge to dip everything in bleach. Don’t worry, I haven’t and won’t ever do that – I don’t even have any bleach in my home.

Vegetables, on the other hand, are more forgiving. The worst consequence of undercooked veggies? Extra crunch. I’ve undercooked carrots before, I’ve undercooked broccoli before. Again, no one got sick. In fact, no one even complained, because there’s nothing wrong with a little crunch in your veggies. In fact, I would much rather have undercooked veggies than overcooked veggies, so I’m probably on the shorter end of the cooking time spectrum. I wonder if that makes for slightly more nutritious veggies?

Hmm. I should make stuffed peppers this weekend. Yum.

Some days, good blog fodder is just hard to come by. This is because I have a relatively ordinary, run-of-the-mill life. I have a job that provides me with a modest yet sufficient income. I’m not saying I don’t like my life – I like being me a whole lot, as it turns out. I’m merely acknowledging that there may be days where things that I think are interesting really aren’t, and I’ll still blog them because I think they’re interesting, but it totally wasn’t blog fodder. If I were willing to photo document evidence of my clumsiness for the webiverse that might liven things up, but I’m a prideful, prideful girl, so there’ll be almost none of that. I have done it before, so never say never.

Today, though, when I think back on the mundane little errands I spent my day on, even I’m not that interested, so I know there’s no hope of trying to spruce it up into something bloggable. The only vaguely interesting thing is that I was presented with yet more evidence that crazy runs deep in my genetic code, and probably I am doomed, but at present I’m unwilling to share the details of what that evidence was.

Instead, imagine an exciting escapade for me. Maybe tomorrow something interesting will happen. Or something will happen that makes me think an interesting thought. Or maybe I’ll have an interesting dream. Now that I think of it, last night’s dream was pretty wacky, but the details are sort of hazy. I know there was a mystical ninja warrior princess who turned out to be a pretty ordinary looking fellow in magical drag, a Turkish assassin, and I had the ability to walk on clouds, until it started to rain, at which point I fell through. How those are all connected into a single, somewhat coherent storyline – well, as coherent as dreams ever are – is beyond me at this point though….

Tonight I watched This Is It, the documentary about what was to be Michael Jackson’s big new show.

They had figured out some wildly impressive pyrotechnics, there was to be a ginormous LCD screen for little movie vignette-type leadins for some numbers – like Thriller – a portion of the stage was actually mounted on a cherry picker so that Michael could be raised on a little platform and then swept out over part of the audience, one number was to feature an aerialist – a dancer/gymnast twirling around in a cage-like contraption that dangled from the ceiling – and costumes with lights actually in the fabric and so many rhinestones the costume designers said they felt they needed sunglasses in creating the garment due to the sheer amount of reflected light. Apparently, Michael Jackson really liked his sparklies – in the rehearsal footage he was almost always wearing one garment that just glittered insanely. And the toast boosters! Little platforms that could be lowered under the stage, and had a ‘pop’ speed for lifting, to give the dancers standing on them an extra oomph as they popped onto the stage. Like toast popping out of the toaster.

It’s really too bad that the show never fully became a reality. Not that I would have seen it – London’s a bit far to go for a concert when one’s not exactly a die-hard fan. Still, it really would have been something. I’m glad I watched to documentary. His Vegas act would have been fun!!!

At this point, it was pretty much full of duds. That being said, I did find one box of cards with a nice winter scene on the front, and a pleasant message inside that did not invoke any religious deities – as someone who celebrates Christmas in a secular sort of way who sends cards to other folks who also celebrate Christmas in a secular sort of way, I appreciate cards that do not mention, among other things, blessings or prayers.

The characters are over-the-top stereotypes – the high-powered, emotionally unavailable boss lady, the two socially inept genius inventors/developers, the charismatic head of the R&D department, the product testing coordinator who is more normal than the scientists and the boss lady, but still has some quirks to her – but none of them are that sort of over-the-top that gets on your nerves and makes you abandon the show. They’re sort of at the extreme end of possible human beings, if that makes any sense whatsoever. The sorts of scenarios that unfold in each episode are also over-the-top, but again, not so far fetched that you roll your eyes and mentally shut down. It all just seems like fun. Maybe because of the dialogue – it’s really good. It’s fun and silly, but not like low-brow flatulent silly.

So why am I posting here about how much I like Better Off Ted? Because I hear it’s on the verge of being cancelled – in fact, I’m informed that it’s practically confirmed as being cancelled once season 2 finishes up. Which would be a real shame. TV needs more entertaining shows like this, and we could probably do with fewer of those reality shows that are set up to appeal to the baser, voyeuristic parts of human nature… Now, I admit I’m a bit of a voyeur – but more in the sexual realm!

Now, I like steamed rice. For reasons that escape me, my parents have it in their heads that I don’t like rice, so whenever I mention to them that I have eaten or will be eating rice, there’s this stunned silence followed by an incredulous, But, you don’t like rice! I can’t seem to correct them out of this pattern. True, I don’t like fried rice. But any other rice? Bring it on.

So I had bought some brown rice, just to try, and had cooked it up on a couple of occasions in the old rice cooker. It was good, and more flavourful than white rice, but it seemed rather chewy and tough. I figured that was the character of brown rice.

As it turns out, that was incorrect. When cooked properly, brown rice is amazing. As in, I may never buy white rice again.

The new Zojirushi’s brown rice mode – not to be confused with the GABA brown rice mode, which I haven’t tried yet – takes a bit longer than white rice. It takes a little over an hour for the program to run through to completion. It’s worth the extra wait, though, because the resulting rice is tender and fluffy and more flavourful than before and really just a pleasure to chow down on. The first time I did it, I noticed right away that the rice had cooked up to a softer texture than what I had seen with the old Zojirushi, and I was worried at first – I was afraid it had gotten overcooked and was now brown rice mush. Now I know – this is what it’s like when it’s done right.

As an added bonus, the new Zojirushi plays a little tune for me when the cooking starts, and another when the cooking is done. No more harsh beeps ringing out from the kitchen – instead, you get a cute little song.
